Bioluminescent Marine Plankton by Ramasamy Santhanam Pdf

Bioluminescence, the “cold living light” or the “cold fire of the sea,” is extremely common in all oceans at all depths. However, this phenomenon is nearly absent in freshwater, with the exception of a freshwater limpet. More than 75% of deep-sea creatures have been reported to produce their own light. The luminescent marine plankton such as dinoflagellate, radiolarians, jellyfish, comb jellies, annelids, copepods, ostracods, mysids, amphipods, euphausiids, and tunicates form an important component in the marine food chain. Research on luminescent marine plankton is gaining momentum owing to its importance in life science research and medicine. The glowing Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) extracted from the North Pacific jellyfish, Aqueorea victoria (for which the Japanese biologist, Osamu Shimonmura won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2008) has helped shed light on key processes such as the spread of cancer, the development of brain cells, the growth of bacteria, damage to cells by Alzheimer's disease, and the development of insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Therefore, it is difficult to underscore the importance of bioluminescence and the organisms associated with this phenomenon. Bioluminescent Marine Plankton is a unique reference that attempts to provide answers to questions about bioluminescence. The first of its kind, this book attempts to answer questions on the subject with a focus on planktonic organisms. 12 chapters provide information about the chemistry of bioluminescence, types of bioluminescent displays, distribution of bioluminescence among marine plankton, ecological functions and utility of planktonic bioluminescence. Chapters are dedicated to the biology and ecology of specific groups of plankton that span about 200 luminescent marine species. The detailed book is an essential compendium on marine plankton for a broad range of readers who want to learn about bioluminescent plankton. A list of detailed references is also provided for the benefit of teachers, students, researchers and enthusiasts interested in marine biology, aquaculture, and environmental sciences.

Slow Church by C. Christopher Smith,John Pattison Pdf

In today's fast-food world, Christianity can seem outdated or archaic. The temptation becomes to pick up the pace and play the game. But Chris Smith and John Pattison invites us to leave franchise faith behind and enter the kingdom of God, where people know each other well and love one another as Christ loves the church.

Light and Life in the Sea by Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom Pdf

Without light there would be no life in the sea. Since the seas were the cradle for the evolution of all life forms, the theme of this book is central to our understanding of the interaction between living organisms and their environments. To express the breadth of research in this area, leading experts in topics as diverse as satellite imagery and molecular biology have contributed to this collection of essays on light and life in the sea, first published in 1990. Intended for all with an interest in the marine environment, this book aims to present the reader with a sampler of the exciting research that is underway and to provide an introduction to its broad compass.

Biology and Ecology of Bioluminescent Marine Fishes by Ramasamy Santhanam Pdf

This enlightening new volume details over 200 species of bioluminescent marine fishes along with their biotechnological and therapeutic applications. It delves into the chemistry, diversity, biology, and functions of these fishes. Bioluminescence, which is a type of chemiluminescence and is a "cold living light," is seen in a wide variety of organisms from bacteria to fish. The chemicals and circumstances of this phenomenon are used for biotechnological, commercial, and therapeutic applications. Bioluminescence imaging technology has provided valuable means for the monitoring of different biological processes for immunology, oncology, virology, and neuroscience. A new emerging biological technique that combines luminescence with optogenetics involves the use of light to control cells, particularly neurons, in living tissue. Bioluminescence may also be as a potential form of green energy. The author states that more than 75% of deep-sea creatures (700 marine genera within 16 phyla) have been estimated to possess this phenomenon of bioluminescence. While marine plants do not display bioluminescence, several organisms such as the dinoflagellate, cnidarian, jellyfish, ostracod crustacean, molluscan squids and lantern fish are well known for their luminescence. Bioluminescence is employed by marine organisms mainly to hunt their prey, to defend against predators and in reproduction. This scientifically comprehensive and well-illustrated book will serve as an essential standard reference for students and teachers as well as marine biologists, fisheries scientists, zoologists, and environmentalists.

Photoproteins in Bioanalysis by Sylvia Daunert,Sapna K. Deo Pdf

The use of light-emitting proteins for the detection of biomolecules provides fast and sensitive methods which overcome the disadvantages of radioactive labels and the high cost of fluorescent dyes. This reference work summarizes modern advanced techniques and their applications and includes practical examples of assays based on photoproteins. The book presents contemporary key topics like luminescent marine organisms, DNA probes, reporter gene assays and photoproteins, ratiometric sensing, use of photoproteins for in vivo functional imaging and luminescent proteins in binding assays, to name just a few, and is complemented by recent advances in instrumentation. Includes an introductory chapter by 2008 Chemistry Nobel laureate Osamu Shimomura.

Bioluminescence:chemicalprinciplesandmethods(3rdedition) by Shimomura Osamu,Yampolsky Ilia V Pdf

This book is the bible of bioluminescence and a must-read not only for the students but for those who work in various fields relating to bioluminescence. It summarizes current structural information on all known bioluminescent systems in nature, from well-studied ones to those that have been seldom investigated. This book remains an important source of chemical knowledge on bioluminescence and, since the second edition's publication in 2012, has been revised to include major developments in two systems: earthworm Fridericia and higher fungi whose luciferins have been elucidated and synthesized. These two new luciferins represent an essential addition to seven previously known, with fully rewritten sections covering this new subject matter.

An Assessment and Annotated Bibliography of Marine Bioluminescence Research: 1979-1987 by Richard V. Lynch Pdf

Publications relevant to marine bioluminescence from 1979 through 1987 are annotated and cross-indexed by author, organism studied, geographic location, and key words. Sources of research funding are discussed, and the most prolific institutions and most popular sources for publication are identified. Six areas of particular interest--namely flash characteristics, stimulation techniques, geographic and temporal distribution and occurrence and correlation with environmental parameters, the luminous organism themselves, symbiosis, and circadian rhythms are identified and analyzed for significant progress, important research omissions, and trends. No significant trends are identified, although the suggestion of the possibility of a decrease in research effort in these areas over the decade is noted. The international nature of the research is considered ... Bioluminescence, Marine biology, Optical properties.

Bioluminescence by David Lapota Pdf

We now find ourselves utilizing luciferase - luciferin proteins, ATP, genes and the whole complex of these interactions to observe and follow the progress or inhibition of tumors in animal models by measuring bioluminescence intensity, spatially and temporally using highly sophisticated camera systems. This book describes applications in preclinical oncology research by bioluminescence imaging (BLI) with a variety of applications. Chapters describe current methodologies for rapid detection of contaminants using the Milliflex system, and the use of bioluminescence resonance energy transfer (BRET) technology for monitoring physical interactions between proteins in living cells. Others are using bioluminescent proteins for high sensitive optical reporters imaging in living animals, developing pH-tolerant luciferase for brighter in vivo imaging, and oscillation characteristics in bacterial bioluminescence. The book also contains descriptions of the long-term seasonal characteristics of oceanic bioluminescence and the responsible planktonic species producing bioluminescence. Such studies are few and rare.
