Greek Prose Composition (Classic Reprint) by Henry Carr Pearson Pdf

Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. Birds by St. George Mivart Pdf

Excerpt from Birds: The Elements of Ornithology All Birds have feathers, and no such thing as a feather is possessed by any creature which is not a Bird. This character alone, therefore, suffices to define the whole Class. The uniformity of their structure is very remarkable. While some beasts, some reptiles, and some fishes have but a pair of limbs, and other reptiles and fishes have none, all Birds have two pairs - a pair of wings and apair of legs. Most beasts and reptiles have a long tail, while some are without any; but every existing Bird has a tail which, feathers apart, is short T. Some beasts, some reptiles, and some fishes are edentulous, while most have teeth; but no living Bird possesses such structures. Some beasts, some reptiles, and some fishes are eyeless but every Bird has a pair of eyes. Birds are eminently aerial creatures, and there are but very few which have no power of flight; while none of the living members of the other Classes can truly fly except Bats; though some ancient reptiles (pterodactyles) possessed a similar power. Although many birds are more or less aquatic in their habits, none are so completely so as either the Whales and Porpoises amongst beasts, or certain reptiles. Feathers and Facts by Royal Soc for the Protection of Birds Pdf

Excerpt from Feathers and Facts: A Reply to the Feather-Trade, and Review of Facts With Reference to the Persecution of Birds for Their Plumage The facts concerning the trade in birds and their feathers for millinery purposes have been repeatedly stated by the Royal Society for the Protection Of Birds and by kindred Societies in Europe, America (north and South), India and other parts of the world. Now that there is a fair prospect Of a law being Obtained to prohibit the importation into Great Britain of the plumage Of species which are being destroyed solely for their feathers, the Trade, alarmed at the threatened loss of their profits, are industriously engaged in scattering their letters, circulars, and pamphlets broadcast over the country. It therefore becomes necessary to recapitulate the facts, reply to the statement Of defence in their latest publication The Feather Trade to deal yet once more with their Old mis statements, and with such Of their new assertions as have any bearing on the subject. Much that is irrelevant is introduced by writers representing the trade; much about the spread of civilization as a cause of the extirpation Of birds, and much in denunciation of pheasant preservation and Of big-game hunting in Africa. Birds in Town Village (Classic Reprint) by W. H. Hudson Pdf

Excerpt from Birds in Town Village Between these two long parts there are five shorter essays which I have retained with little alteration, and these in one or two instances are consequently out of date, especially in what was said with bitterness in the essay on Exotic Birds for Britain anent the feather-wearing fashion and of the London trade in dead birds and the re fusal of women at that time to help us in trying to save the beautiful wild bird life of this country and of the world generally from extermination. Happily, the 'last twenty years of the life and work of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds have changed all that, and it would not now be too much to say that all right-thinking per sons in this country, men and women, are anxious to see the end of this iniquitous traffic.
