Birds of Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario (Classic Reprint) by Duncan Alexander Maclulich Pdf

Excerpt from Birds of Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario This account of the birds of Algonquin Park has been compiled to bring together the scattered information about the birds of the park to be found in more than two dozen published articles and in the unpublished records of a number of naturalists. Although this account is not primarily. Intended as a popular hand book, an effort has been made in preparing it, to make it as useful as possible to the increasingly large number of persons interested in observing and recording the birds met with during their outings in Algonquin Park. This list includes 169 species. There are records of breeding for 96 kinds of birds. Included in the list are 23 species that are to be found in the park all year round. Nine others live in the park only in winter. The total number of kinds of birds known to be found in the park in winter is, therefore, 32. Two species have been introduced but failed to establish themselves permanently. Twelve other species, not included in the 169 mentioned, have been considered hypothetical for the present. The rest of the birds in the list are transient spring and fall migrants, and of summer occurrence. The opening paragraph about each species gives a generalized state ment of the status of the bird, together with some description of the habitat where it may be found. The status includes such information as abundance and whether the bird is a summer or winter resident or a transient passing through only on migration. Occasional notes on habits and nesting are given. The general statement is based on the writer's personal experience, the scattered literature, manuscript notes that were loaned to me and the information on contiguous areas available in the Royal Ontario Museum of Zoology. The Birds of the Vicinity of Lake Nipissing, Ontario (Classic Reprint) by William E Ricker Pdf

Excerpt from The Birds of the Vicinity of Lake Nipissing, Ontario The observations from which this paper1 is prepared were made intermittently over a number of years. The first writer lived at North Bay up to October, 1926, except for the months of July and August of each year, and made his first records of bird observations in 1922. From 1924 to 1926 spring migration records are fairly complete, as observations were made almost daily from early April to early June of those years. Autumn work was much less completely recorded, and absence of fall records does not necessarily imply absence of the species. Brief visits to North Bay in later years have supplied some additional information, and the months of June and July, 1929, were spent at Frank's Bay. All these observations have been carefully edited. Many observations were made with the assistance of Mr. Charles Ramsay, formerly of North Bay Normal School. Bird-Nesting in North-West Canada (Classic Reprint) by Walter Raine Pdf

Excerpt from Bird-Nesting in North-West Canada The only time I have been able to devote to this work was during evenings after business hours, and not only had the book to be written, but the illustrations had also to be drawn at night, consequently the work has taken longer to execute than I had anticipated, and I wish to thank my subscribers for their patience and indulgence in waiting so long for their copies. Though the title of the book would lead readers to expect the work to be purely Oological, it will be found to treat on matters not strictly Ornithological. I have branched off and given descriptions of the habits of the more important animals inhabiting the region traversed, and have also given a de scription of the scenery between Toronto and Vancouver. The Passenger Pigeon in Ontario (Classic Reprint) by Margaret Howell Mitchell Pdf

Excerpt from The Passenger Pigeon in Ontario Much has already been written of these birds, beginning with accounts from early travellers and pioneers and ending with the more scientific records of such men as Forbush and Barrows. However, nothing as exhaustive as this monograph has ever been attempted. W. B. Mershon and J. C. French made valuable collections of information for their respective States of Michigan and Pennsylvania, but as they themselves assert they were both simply interested and enthusiastic laymen. It is felt, therefore that the present work has a definite contribution to make to the knowledge of an extinct species. It not only preserves such information as we have concerning passenger pigeons in the province of Ontario, but it also covers rather fully several aspects of the birds' life-history which have before been only touched upon. Enumerating the most important, they are: food; northern limits of occurrence and nesting; variation in numbers; fixed migration routes, and finally, a new theory of extermination which divests former theories of much of their uncertainty and mystery.
