David Orsini is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Brown University, where he earned the M.A. and Ph.D. in English Literature. Earlier, he completed his undergraduate work for an Ed.B. at Rhode Island College. He has taught literature, grammar, and composition at Park View Middle School and at Cranston East High School in Cranston, Rhode Island. As an adjunct instructor, he has also taught at Rhode Island College and at Johnson and Wales University. Bitterness / Seven Stories is his first book.
In Bitterness / Seven Stories, David Orsini explores the lives of characters that are tested as well as transformed or defeated by the loss of a spouse or by the loss of children and other relatives during a world war. Some of the characters are tested by the aftermath of a fatal air crash, by terminal illness, and by unrequited love. The troubled human beings who activate their journeys within these pages include war-haunted veterans, a young protagonist who has inadvertently caused the death of his best friend, and a world-weary engineer who enters an unorthodox sexual triangle. These stories often portray characters who make unwise and sometimes perverse choices and who struggle to move forward to a new cycle. Bitterness / Seven Stories marked the debut of an extraordinary writer. His stories guide the reader into memorable encounters with human beings who stand at the cusp of new self-awareness.
Like his brother before him, Stringer was surrendered to foster care, shortly after birth, by his unwed and underemployed mother—a common practice for unmarried women in mid-century America. The clash of being poor and black in an affluent, largely white New York suburb begins to foment pain and rage which erupts, more often than not, when he is at school. What follows is an intensely personal, American journey: a universal story of childhood where childhood universals are absent. We experience how a child fashions his life out of the materials given to him, however threadbare. This is a "boy-meets-world" story, the chronicle of one child’s struggle simply to be.
