Ties That Blind in Canadian/american Relations by Richard L. Barton Pdf

This volume explores the political impact of journalistic discourse on international -- and especially Canadian/American -- relations. In so doing, it provides a comparative analysis of American and international press accounts of selected Canadian/American issues such as free trade, cruise missile testing, and acid rain. The intention of the book is to enhance understanding of the political significance of journalists' interpretations of Canadian/American affairs, although the communication perspective and method of news analysis of the book are appropriate for the study of the United States' news-mediated relations with other countries. This study also examines the way people negotiate news-mediated political discourse and how that communication process can influence international affairs.

Weird Alberta Laws by Lisa Wojna Pdf

Since becoming a province in 1905, the Alberta government enacted many laws to match the wild spirit of the frontier. Later, the unique character of the people spawned many more. Read about some of the quirky laws Alberta has hidden in its books: * In 1914, municipal leaders in the town of Ponoka banned the building of mud huts with straw roofs because they were considered a fire hazard * In 1938, any cat in Fort Saskatchewan caught not wearing a bell was considered to be ''an enemy to the Song Birds,'' and its owner could face a fine of $10 or a week in the hoosegow * Legend has it that at one time, criminals who served their time in an Albertan prison were sent on their way with a loaded gun and a horse * The curfew instituted by the city of Red Deer puts the responsibility squarely on the parents; if a peace officer escorts your child home after hours, you can expect at least a $50 fine, or $100 for a second offence * As recently as 1968, it was illegal for residents in the town of Falher to attend horse races, horse race meetings, dog races, boxing contests or wrestling matches on Sundays * And more bizarre and just plain strange laws in Alberta...

British Columbia Bizarre by Rosemary Neering Pdf

Britsh Columbia Bizarre is a fascinating and eclectic mix of tales, snippets, historical facts, fancies and misconceptions teased from the history of British Columbia. No one should read this book to obtain a balanced view of the province's history. It ignores the important people and trends that contributed to BC's story, and instead favours the often strange, sometimes wonderful, and frequently insignificant events and people that make this province a storyteller's dream. Amuse yourself with tales of the brothels, bowdy houses and bagnios that existed in every town, the wild camels of Vancouver Island, communists (well, sort of), duels to the death and goose-races. And if that isn't enough, fill your boots with a potpourri of editorial feuds, gamblers and professional hangmen, lepers and lynching, and, let's not forget, angry moose. Sure to delight and surprise, Britsh Columbia Bizarre is a wild safari through provincial history that ill confuse your assumptions and tickle your taste for the unusual.

In Finding Superman, some of the most prominent educational thinkers of our time examine the pressing issues of educational equity and excellence brought to light in Davis Guggenheim's popular documentary, Waiting for Superman. The film's portrayal of urban public schools as uniform failures and charter schools as the only viable alternative for our nation's youth demands a closer look. Across the chapters of this important book, the contributors reveal the film's untold stories. These include the many public schools that are doing an excellent job of educating students, as well as the many charter schools that are doing no better than most public schools, despite their monetary advantages.

Marie, Ontario * In Ponoka, Alberta, don?t build a mud hut or a house with a straw roof * Don't let your Canadian flag snap in the wind in Collingwood, Ontario * Coloured margarine is illegal in Quebec * Don't leave a trail of nails, tacks or glass behind you when you walk down the streets of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan * Clear sodas are not allowed to contain caffeine in Canada. * Plus more outdated, outmoded or just plain outlandish laws from throughout Canada.

Canada's Other Red Scare by Scott Rutherford Pdf

Indigenous activism put small-town northern Ontario on the map in the 1960s and early 1970s. Kenora, Ontario, was home to a four-hundred-person march, popularly called "Canada's First Civil Rights March," and a two-month-long armed occupation of a small lakefront park. Canada's Other Red Scare shows how important it is to link the local and the global to broaden narratives of resistance in the 1960s; it is a history not of isolated events closed off from the present but of decolonization as a continuing process. Scott Rutherford explores with rigour and sensitivity the Indigenous political protest and social struggle that took place in Northwestern Ontario and Treaty 3 territory from 1965 to 1974. Drawing on archival documents, media coverage, published interviews, memoirs, and social movement literature, as well as his own lived experience as a settler growing up in Kenora, he reconstructs a period of turbulent protest and the responses it provoked, from support to disbelief to outright hostility. Indigenous organizers advocated for a wide range of issues, from better employment opportunities to the recognition of nationhood, by using such tactics as marches, cultural production, community organizing, journalism, and armed occupation. They drew inspiration from global currents - from black American freedom movements to Third World decolonization - to challenge the inequalities and racial logics that shaped settler-colonialism and daily life in Kenora. Accessible and wide-reaching, Canada's Other Red Scare makes the case that Indigenous political protest during this period should be thought of as both local and transnational, an urgent exercise in confronting the experience of settler-colonialism in places and moments of protest, when its logic and acts of dispossession are held up like a mirror.

Conversations with Robertson Davies by Robertson Davies Pdf

Conversations with Robertson Davies is a long overdue anthology of interviews with Canada's most respected literary figure. Journalist, essayist, reviewer, playwright, and novelist, Robertson Davies has not only been a leading figure in Canadian literature since World War II, but, since the publication of Fifth Business in 1970, he has become known throughout the world. Conversations with Robertson Davies will be of interest both to the student of Canadian literature and culture and to the scholar examining Davies's plays and novels as well as to the general reader who would like to know more about the awesome man behind the Salterton and Deptford trilogies, What's Bred in the Bone, and The Lyre of Orpheus. A majority of this anthology of twenty-eight interviews has never before appeared in print. Along with these previously unpublished interviews, the reader finds a selection of the best print interviews: Tom Harpur of the Toronto Star proves Davies's spiritual beliefs, Ann Saddlemyer looks into his dreams, and author Terence M. Green questions Davies on the supernatural.
