Blacks in the American West and Beyond--America, Canada, and Mexico by George H. Junne Pdf

Almost a century before their arrival in the English New World, Blacks appeared alongside the Spanish in what is now the American West. Through their families, communities, and institutions, these Western Blacks left behind a long history, which is just now beginning to receive systematic scholarly treatment. Comprehensively indexing a variety of research materials on Blacks in the North American West, Junne offers an invaluable navigational tool for students of American and African-American history. Entries are organized both geographically and topically, and cover a broad range of subjects including cross-cultural interaction, health, art, and law. Contains a complete compilation of African-American newspapers.

From Black Power to Black Studies by Fabio Rojas Pdf

The black power movement helped redefine African Americans' identity and establish a new racial consciousness in the 1960s. As an influential political force, this movement in turn spawned the academic discipline known as Black Studies. Today there are more than a hundred Black Studies degree programs in the United States, many of them located in America’s elite research institutions. In From Black Power to Black Studies, Fabio Rojas explores how this radical social movement evolved into a recognized academic discipline. Rojas traces the evolution of Black Studies over more than three decades, beginning with its origins in black nationalist politics. His account includes the 1968 Third World Strike at San Francisco State College, the Ford Foundation’s attempts to shape the field, and a description of Black Studies programs at various American universities. His statistical analyses of protest data illuminate how violent and nonviolent protests influenced the establishment of Black Studies programs. Integrating personal interviews and newly discovered archival material, Rojas documents how social activism can bring about organizational change. Shedding light on the black power movement, Black Studies programs, and American higher education, this historical analysis reveals how radical politics are assimilated into the university system.

Blacks in America by James M. McPherson Pdf

This book is neither a simple bibliography nor an interpretive survey of the history and culture of black people in the United States. Rather it is an attempt to combine narrative, interpretation, and bibliography in a chronological and topical framework that will provide teachers, students, and interested readers with an up-to-date guide to Afro-American history and culture. Utilizing an interdisciplinary approach, the authors have organized the history of black Americans into 100 topics, from Africa and the slave trade to life-styles in the urban ghettos of 1970. Many of the topics are divided into subtopics, and our aim has been to provide annotated references to the best and most useful literature on the most important aspects of race relations and the black community in the United States.

Black Populism in the United States by Anthony J. Adam,Gerald H. Gaither Pdf

In recent years the study of the Southern Populist movement at the turn of the century has flourished. Despite the significant new research in the field there is no single annotated bibliography that covers the literature and the formation of the Farmer's Alliance through the present. Of more immediate interest to multicultural studies is the role of African Americans in the movement. This annotated bibliography examines relevant works on the relationships between African Americans and the Southern Populist movement in hope of leading to further scholarship and understanding of this period. This book is the first of its kind in its subject area. This bibliography presents a significant amount of new material to scholars, including items not cited in most of the literature on the topic. The numerous citations are presented in their correct form for the first time, which will improve researching and locating pertinent materials. This work brings to life an almost forgotten era in African American history, disproving myths of a passive race and a constant strife between blacks and whites. This book will demand attention from academic historians, graduate students and researchers in history, African American studies, and political science.

Postcolonial Literature and the United States: Race, Ethnicity, and Literature by Anonim Pdf

Probing essays that examine critical issues surrounding the United States's ever-expanding international cultural identity in the postcolonial era Download Plain Text version At the beginning of the twenty-first century, we may be in a "transnational" moment, increasingly aware of the ways in which local and national narratives, in literature and elsewhere, cannot be conceived apart from a radically new sense of shared human histories and global interdependence. To think transnationally about literature, history, and culture requires a study of the evolution of hybrid identities within nation-states and diasporic identities across national boundaries. Studies addressing issues of race, ethnicity, and empire in U.S. culture have provided some of the most innova-tive and controversial contributions to recent scholarship. Postcolonial Theory and the United States: Race, Ethnicity, and Literature represents a new chapter in the emerging dialogues about the importance of borders on a global scale. This book collects nineteen essays written in the 1990s in this emergent field by both well established and up-and-coming scholars. Almost all the essays have been either especially written for this volume or revised for inclusion here. These essays are accessible, well-focused resources for college and university students and their teachers, displaying both historical depth and theoretical finesse as they attempt close and lively readings. The anthology includes more than one discussion of each literary tradition associated with major racial or ethnic communities. Such a gathering of diverse, complementary, and often competing viewpoints provides a good introduction to the cultural differences and commonalities that comprise the United States today. The volume opens with two essays by the editors: first, a survey of the ideas in the individual pieces, and, second, a long essay that places current debates in U.S. ethnicity and race studies within both the history of American studies as a whole and recent developments in postcolonial theory. Amritjit Singh, a professor of English and African American studies at Rhode Island College, is coeditor of Conversations with Ralph Ellison and Conversations with Ishmael Reed (both from University Press of Mississippi). Peter Schmidt, a professor of English at Swarthmore College, is the author of The Heart of the Story: Eudora Welty's Short Fiction (University Press of Mississippi).
