Blood and Volts by Thom Metzger,Th Metzger Pdf

At the dawn of the twentieth century, General Electric (using Thomas Edison's direct current) and Westinghouse (employing Nikola Tesla's groundbreaking alternating current) were locked in combat to determine which would dominate the technological fate of the nation. Electricity was thought to be a highly ambiguous force: both godlike creative power and demonic destroyer of life. Th. Metzger argues that for scientists of the day, as well as the general populace, the electric chair was both harbinger and early pinnacle of modernity, the high altar of the rising cult of progress. In the popular imagination, Tesla and Edison were seen as nearly superhuman beings, and their struggle was not only for wealth and power, but to reshape the face of America. In Blood and Volts, Metzger creates a unique synthesis of scholarship, storytelling and cultural critique to present a clear and compelling story of America struggling to define itself through scientific innovation.

A Method for Monitoring Systolic and Diastolic Blood Pressures on a Beat by Beat Basis by Michael L. Rubinstein,Adolf R. Marko Pdf

A system for measuring systolic and diastolic blood pressures on a beat by beat basis is described. The system input consists of only the amplified output of a pressure transducer. It operates over a range of 0-250 mm Hg, will satisfactorily trigger on pulse pressures from 5 mm Hg to 100 mm Hg, and is insensitive to wave shape or baseline changes. The theory of beat by beat measurement is discussed, several current methods are explained, and a new method is described in detail. A practical circuit is given along with the results of the operation of a prototype. (Author).

Oxygen Transport to Tissue XIX by David T. Delpy Pdf

In 1996, for its 24th scientific meeting, the International Society on Oxygen Trans port to Tissue made its third visit to the United Kingdom. The previous two meetings were held in Cambridge in 1977 and 1986, but this was the first meeting to be held "north of the border" in Scotland. It was attended by some 186 delegates and accompanying persons and there were 128 presentations. The venue was the West Park Centre, the University of Dundee's residential conference centre, and ISOTT was only the second major meeting to be held there using the new Villa accommodation. Dundee's slogan is "City of Discovery" since it became the permanent home of the Royal Research Ship Discovery which was built in the city and was used by Captain Scott on his first ex pedition to the Antarctic. The ISOTT meeting also fulfilled its promise of being a meeting of dis covery with sessions on all aspects of oxygen transport to tissue. The inclusion of a session on oxygen transport in vascular disease reflected the interests of the local participants. All of the manuscripts were reviewed both for their scientific and editorial accept ability and in some 50% of cases, revisions were requested from the authors. Some manu scripts were ultimately rejected. However, in view of the importance of producing the Proceedings as quickly as possible it is possible that some minor errors may have slipped through, for which the editors apologise.

Red Blood, Black Sand by Chuck Tatum Pdf

A story of heroism, friendship, and courage in World War 2—as seen in the award-winning HBO miniseries The Pacific. In 1944, the U.S. Marines were building the 5th Marine Division—also known as “The Spearhead”—in preparation for the invasion of the small, Japanese-held island of Iwo Jima... When Chuck Tatum began Marine boot camp, he was just a smart-aleck teenager eager to serve his country. Little did he know that he would be training under a living legend of the Corps—Medal of Honor recipient John Basilone, who had almost single-handedly fought off a Japanese force of three thousand on Guadalcanal. It was from Basilone and other sergeants that Tatum would learn how to fight like a Marine and act like a man—skills he would need when he hit the black sand of Iwo Jima with thirty thousand other Marines. Red Blood, Black Sand is the story of Chuck’s two weeks in hell, where he would watch his hero, Basilone, fall, where the enemy stalked the night, where snipers haunted the day, and where Chuck would see his friends whittled away in an eardrum-shattering, earth-shaking, meat grinder of a battle. This is the island, the heroes, and the tragedy of Iwo Jima—through the eyes of one who survived it.

MySQL for the Internet of Things by Charles Bell Pdf

This book introduces the problems facing Internet of Things developers and explores current technologies and techniques to help you manage, mine, and make sense of the data being collected through the use of the world’s most popular database on the Internet - MySQL. The IoT is poised to change how we interact with and perceive the world around us, and the possibilities are nearly boundless. As more and more connected devices generate data, we will need to solve the problem of how to collect, store, and make sense of IoT data by leveraging the power of database systems. The book begins with an introduction of the MySQL database system and storage of sensor data. Detailed instructions and examples are provided to show how to add database nodes to IoT solutions including how to leverage MySQL high availability, including examples of how to protect data from node outages using advanced features of MySQL. The book closes with a comparison of raw and transformed data showing how transformed data can improve understandability and help you cut through a clutter of superfluous data toward the goal of mining nuggets of useful knowledge. In this book, you'll learn to: Understand the crisis of vast volumes of data from connected devices Transform data to improve reporting and reduce storage volume Store and aggregate your IoT data across multiple database servers Build localized, low-cost MySQL database servers using small and inexpensive computers Connect Arduino boards and other devices directly to MySQL database servers Build high availability MySQL solutions among low-power computing devices

The High Blood Pressure Solution by Richard D. Moore Pdf

• Proves that the majority of cases of stroke, heart attack, and hypertension can easily be prevented by maintaining the proper ratio of potassium to sodium in the diet. • Updated with scientific evidence from a recent Finnish study showing a 60 percent decline in deaths attributed to strokes and heart attacks. • Provides a comprehensive program for balancing body chemistry at the cellular level. High blood pressure is entirely preventable, without reliance on synthetic drugs. Dr. Moore's approach is simple: by maintaining the proper ratio of potassium to sodium in the diet, blood pressure can be regulated at the cellular level, preventing the development of hypertension and the high incidence of strokes and heart attacks associated with it. Dr. Moore updates this edition with a new preface reporting on the latest scientific research in support of his program. The most striking results come from Finland, where for several decades sodium chloride has been replaced nationwide with a commercial sodium/potassium mixture, resulting in a 60 percent decline nationwide in deaths attributed to strokes and heart attacks. Extrapolated to America, the Finnish statistics would mean 360,000 strokes prevented and 96,000 lives saved every year. Dr. Moore makes it clear that high blood pressure is only one symptom of an entire systemic imbalance. He outlines a safe, effective program that focuses on nutrition, weight loss, and exercise to bring the entire body chemistry into balance. For those currently taking blood pressure medications, he includes a chapter on working with your physician to ensure that any reduction in hypertension drugs can be effected gradually and safely.
