Bargains Beyond the Border - Get Past the Blood and Drugs by Tom Kelly Pdf

News reports - including a segment on 60 Minutes - have depicted the entire country of Mexico as being an absolute mess, awash in blood and guns on every street corner. Ironically, people living there have a dramatically different perspective, especially in the "fly-in" destinations that continue to hold their value. Despite what you may have heard, read and seen, the country is not under siege. The laid-back lure of Mexico's beaches, forests, deserts, people, and culture has been capturing visitors and second-home buyers for decades and has become an international draw no longer driven solely by Americans and Canadians. Not only is land plentiful, exotic, captivating, and beautiful but also it is typically more affordable than most of the property found in America's getaway areas. Much has been written about the kidnappings, roadside hijackings, crooked cops and ever the infamous bandidos in some of the regions of Mexico. Most of the violence south of the border, however, is directly related to the drug cartels and the authorities who are trying to eradicate them. There is absolutely no pattern of any innocent U.S. citizens being randomly murdered in drug violence. In this book, we will meet other second-home buyers, investors and retirees who share positive views about living and investing south of the border. We will show you their answers to our questions about crime and occupancy in key areas of the country. We'll also explain why Mexico will become a needed alternative especially for 59,250,000 baby boomers that have not saved enough to fund their retirement years.

Germany's Second Chance by Anne Sa'adah Pdf

How does a country reconstitute itself as a functioning democracy after a period of dictatorship? The new community may execute, imprison, or temporarily disenfranchise some citizens, but it will be unable to exclude all who supported the fallen regime. Political reconciliation must lay the groundwork for political trust. Democracy offers the compromised--and many who were more than just compromised--a second chance. In this new book, Anne Sa'adah explores twentieth-century Germany's second chances. Drawing on evidence from intellectual debates, trials, literary works, controversies about the actions of public figures, and partisan competition, Sa'adah analyzes German responses to the problem of reconciliation after 1945 and again after 1989. She depicts the frustrations, moral and political ambiguities, and disappointments inherent to even successful processes of democratization. She constantly underscores the difficult trade-off between achieving a modicum of justice and securing the legitimacy and stability of the new regime. A strategy of reconciliation emphasizing outward conformity to democratic norms and behavior, she argues, has a greater chance of sustaining a new and fragile democracy than do more direct attempts to punish past misdeeds and alter people's inner convictions.

Bloodbath by Patricia Edgar Pdf

Patricia Edgar has been named one of the ten most influential people in the development of Australian television production. Her candid memoir offers a rare behind-the-scenes look at the television industry and its politics. It also tells her own story-of how a young girl from Mildura became a leading innovator in Australian children's television production, and a voice to be reckoned with in a tough business. As a regulator and policy maker, Dr Edgar's take-no-prisoners style won her great fans and made her bitter enemies. Dr Edgar was the first woman appointed to the Australian Broadcasting Control Board. For ten years she fought for more locally produced, first-release children's drama on Australian television. In the early 1980s she helped establish the Australian Children's Television Foundation, creating some of the most celebrated television ever produced for Australian children, including the Round the Twist series, which sold into more than 100 countries. During her twenty-year tenure, the ACTF won multiple awards including a coveted Emmy and made co-productions with the BBC, Disney and Revcom. Along the way, Dr Edgar worked with a host of notable Australians, including Janet and Robert Holmes O Court, Bruce Gyngell, Hazel Hawke, Phillip Adams, Gulumbu Yunupingu and her brothers Galarrwuy and Mandawuy, Steve Vizard, Hilary McPhee and Paul Jennings. Bloodbath sets its author's triumphs and setbacks in the television industry into the wider perspective of political and economic change, the forces of consumerism and the global marketplace. This memoir reveals Dr Edgar as she really is-a sensitive, thoughtful, determined woman, still working to make the media environment one of quality not pap and a force for learning as well as entertainment. Bloodbath is a must-read for every Australian in the media industry, every parent raising a child, every woman who ever strove for career success, and anyone interested in how leadership works.

Wild Beyond Belief! by Brian Albright Pdf

Exploitation filmmakers played a significant role in revolutionizing American cinema during the 1960s and early 1970s, churning out a string of independent Westerns, biker films, nudie-cuties and horror flicks in record times and often on shoestring budgets. With titles like Horror of the Blood Monsters, Cycle Savages and The Incredible 2-Headed Transplant, these films pushed the boundaries of acceptable on-screen violence and nudity and kept the American theater industry afloat as several major studios teetered on the brink of financial collapse. This work tells the story of that “other” Hollywood through interviews with 16 directors, performers, screenwriters, and stuntmen who helped bring these zero-budget films to the screen against incredible odds. The interviews give insights into exploitation filmmaking from the perspectives of pioneering directors Al Adamson and Jack Hill, actors Jenifer Bishop and Robert Dix, and stuntmen Gary Kent and Gary Littlejohn, and others. The work includes more than 50 photographs, including many rare behind-the-scenes images of the filmmakers on set.

Stories Beyond Belief 2 by Sarah Ruth Scott,Simon Robert Sinclair Pdf

Most of the following stories have been written in Scotland and Sweden. My research for the Harrington curse took place in Aberlady near North Berwick, Scotland. My latest work, Eight Skulls of Teversham, was written partly in Inverness, taking in the atmosphere of the misty hills of Scotlands highlandssuch a beautiful sight to behold. Double exposure was also created with a location of Scotland in mind, taking me back to my ancestors, the Scott clan, and the famous Sir Walter Scott. The stories created in Sweden were cracked porcelain, which covered a wide area of mental and physical abuse. This fictitious book was based on factual events and concerned itself with the life of Ruth Ashley, a psychiatric nurse. I am convinced that a ghost called Sarah influenced my writing, something called automatic writing. For the Love of Charlotte was written in the United States of America, and I must confess greatly influenced by the 9/11 attack on the twin towers in 2001. Again the writing was influenced by ghosts. It is my dream that sooner or later, someone will read this work and consider writing a screenplay for television or movie. Now wouldnt that be good? Teversham is actually in Cambridgeshire, but for the story, there is one on the Scottish border, both a town and a village where the eight skulls existed. Any similarity is purely coincidental and should not be mistaken for the small village that is in Cambridgeshire.

War and Remembrance by Herman Wouk Pdf

A masterpiece of historical fiction and "a journey of extraordinary riches" (New York Times Book Review), War and Remembrance stands as perhaps the great novel of America's "Greatest Generation." These two classic works capture the tide of world events even as they unfold the compelling tale of a single American family drawn into the very center of the war's maelstrom. The multimillion-copy bestsellers that capture all the drama, romance, heroism, and tragedy of the Second World War -- and that constitute Wouk's crowning achievement -- are available for the first time in trade paperback.

Liberalism, Constitutionalism, and Democracy by Russell Hardin Pdf

In his ground-breaking book, the leading political philosopher Russell Hardin develops a new theory of liberal constitutional democracy. Arguing against the standard consensus theories, the author shows how social co-ordination on limited, sociological mutual advantage lies at the heart of liberal constitutionalism when it works to produce stable government. The book argues that liberalism, constitutionalism, and democracy are co-ordination theories. They work only in societies in whichco-ordination of the important power groups for mutual advantage is feasible. It then goes on to examine and interpret the US constitution as motivated centrally by the concern with creating a government to enable commerce. In addition, the book addresses the nature of the problems that the newly democratic, newly market-oriented states face. The analysis of constitutionalism is based on its workability, not on its intrinsic, normative, or universal appeals. Hardin argues, similarly, there areharsh limits on the possibilities of democracy. In general, democracy works only on the margins of great issues. Indeed, it is inherently a device for regulating marginal political conflicts.

Perspectives on the Nuremberg Trial by Guénaël Mettraux Pdf

The trial of major Nazi war criminals in Nuremberg was a landmark event in the development of modern international law, and continues to be highly influential in our understanding of international criminal law and post-conflict justice. This volume offers a unique collection of the most important essays written on the Trial, discussing the key legal, political, and philosophical questions raised by the Trial both at the time and in historical perspective. The collection focuses on pieces from those involved in the Tribunal, discussing the establishment of the Tribunal, the Trial itself, and the debate that followed the Judgment. Also included are representative essays of the academic debate that has surrounded Nuremberg in the sixty years since the Trial. Ranging from the contribution of Nuremberg to the substantive development of international criminal law to the philosophical evaluation of legalism in post-conflict international relations, the perspectives provided by the essays offer a unique overview of the persistent significance of Nuremberg across a range of academic disciplines. The collection also features newly translated essays from key German, Russian, and French writers, available in English for the first time; a new essay by Guénaël Mettraux examining the Nuremberg legacy in contemporary international criminal justice; and an exhaustive bibliography of the literature on Nuremberg.

Passchendaele by Nick Lloyd Pdf

Between July and November 1917, in a small corner of Belgium, more than 500,000 men were killed or maimed, gassed or drowned - and many of the bodies were never found. The Ypres offensive represents the modern impression of the First World War: splintered trees, water-filled craters, muddy shell-holes. The climax was one of the worst battles of both world wars: Passchendaele. The village fell eventually, only for the whole offensive to be called off. But, as Nick Lloyd shows, notably through previously unexamined German documents, it put the Allies nearer to a major turning point in the war than we have ever imagined.
