Excerpt from Book-Auction Records, Vol. 1: A Priced and Annotated Record of London Book Auctions; Part I., October 1, 1902-September 30, 1903 (Containing 14, 013 Records) By all the rules that govern commercial ventures book-audion Records should have been an utter failure. The very title of its first volume - Sale Records - was inadequate, since it did not indicate what class of saies was recorded. The editorial department - not then, I may state, under my own direction - did not give satisfaction to bibliographical experts, while, to crown all, at the very moment that I took over the editor ship myself and altered the title to its present form my health succumbed to the efl'ects of prolonged insomnia, and the publication was suspended for a whole twelvemonth. At the expiration of that time I resumed my work, and issued the volume containing the records for the season 1904-5, and, not foreseeing that the volume for 1903-4 would be called for, the new volume was styled Volume 2, in order to make the series continuous, whereas it should have been named Vol. In the sure and certain hope that its un born brother would yet be brought to life. As every subscriber knows, that volume eventually made its appearance in January 1907, and as a Volume 2 was already in existence the volume of missing records was necessarily Styled Volume 1, Part 2. In order to be self-explanatory as to its position in the series this new edition of the original volume 1 is styled Volume I, Part r. It is true the circumstances have already been stated in Volume I, Part 2, but te-iteration is necessary in order that the position of the respec tive volumes in the series may be thoroughly understood.
