Boston Glass Ceiling by Grace E. Moremen, Editor Pdf

There was no doubt that Agnes Edwards had ambition. It stemmed from the self-confidence she had gained during her university years and from being in the first generation of women to vote. Her professors at the University of California Berkeley had encouraged her to pursue a career in publishing or teaching. What's more, she knew she could support herself with her secretarial skills and job experience. So it was, in the fall of 1922, that Agnes left her home in California and journeyed to Boston. Through three hundred letters, she tells the story of her ambition to become an editor and writer at Boston's prestigious Atlantic Monthly Press, along with the challenges she faced in finding her way in the male-dominated field of book publishing. Both triumphs and disappointments awaited her in the city, as well as an unexpected romance. Going abroad in 1925, she interviewed several authors, including A. A. Milne, creator of Winnie the Pooh. An entertaining record of one woman's life through the early- to mid-1920s, Boston Glass Ceiling provides a personal and detailed glimpse into Boston at that time and offers keen insight into the publishing world from a woman's perspective.

Glass Ceilings and Bottomless Pits by Randy Pearl Albelda,Chris Tilly Pdf

'This extraordinarily lucid book demonstrates that women from all walks of life get the short end of the stick because of their gender. From welfare mothers to corporate executives, Albelda and Tilly show and why the powers-that-be benefit from scapegoating and marginalizing women.' Professor Mimi Abramowitz, author, Regulating the Lives of WomenA cogent analysis of the economic and social realities for women in the United States, across class lines. In an age when the right wing manipulates the dialogue around women's issues to separate middle- and upper-class women from their poorer sisters this book's facts, figures, and analysis provide a much needed antidote.

Women Who Knocked Holes Through The Glass Ceiling: A Phenomenological Study by Gaberella Green Pdf

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2015 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, Argosy University, Sarasota, language: English, abstract: The Glass Ceiling is a notorious phenomenon which consists of biases and unfair treatment to women and minority males. The study consists of a qualitative analysis which is conclusive in regards to learning as the overall theme. Various other themes emerged in the study about the life experiences of female managers and CEOs who knocked out the glass ceiling. The problem is that too few women are getting CEO positions in large organizations. The nature of the research was to explore the advice from women who understand the experience with management positions. Some of the female managers have experience as a female CEO and functioned in a dual role as manager and female CEO. The advice may offer a tool for other females to pursue to gain the CEO position or top positions in firms. The research methodology employed was qualitative analysis. The summary of the procedures was to schedule an appointment with the current female managers and interview them using phenomenological research. The results of the study are conclusive in that the common category among the 10 interview codes was learning. Also, the findings of the study revealed common themes with a frequency of three as Who You Know Helped You Get Your Position (Q1), Climbed the Ladder (Q1), Knowledge of the Roles (Q3), Come Prepared (Q3), Learning by example (Q4), Open to questions (Q4), Learning to deal with different attitudes (Q5), Communication (Q5), Hard work (Q6), Learn (Q8), Report it to HR (Q9), Don’t keep quiet about it (Q9), Hard work (Q10) and Be strong (Q10), respectively. Less common themes reflected a frequency of two for (Q2) as Keep Calm and Have Goals. Moreover, less than common themes were a frequency of two for (Q7) as Be Yourself. Recommendations for further study include researchers that continue to seek interviews with female CEOs in large firms. This may shed light on ways that women can obtain the CEO position in large companies. Also, this may allow for women to climb to higher positions in firms.

Boston’S Banner Years: 1965–2015 by Melvin B. Miller Pdf

Everyone with a sense of fair play is horrified by stories of racially inspired abuse. As bad as such incidents can be, however, what is most damaging to the well-being of blacks is the constant media assertions that blacks are inexorably inferior. It can be difficult for people to feel motivated to achieve when they lack the confidence to believe in their own abilities. Bostons Banner Years: 19652015 seeks to refute the negative implications of alleged black incompetence by chronicling black success. Over the years, editor Melvin B. Miller has developed an institutional memory of his communitys affairs. He has used that unique resource to help produce this collection, in which well-qualified reporters share researched accounts of black achievement in Boston, creating a record for future generations of black community success. Stories of individual achievements of blacks can be inspiring, but they sometimes seem like aberrations. Providing numerous examples of blacks being assertive, competent, and successful, these essays make it impossible to apply the negative racial stereotype to blacks in Boston, a place that is to some extent an incubator of black success. This collection of essays presents a series of biographical profiles highlighting black achievement and success in Boston over the course of fifty years.

Taking the Field by Howard Megdal Pdf

With 162 games a year, the playoffs, and an active offseason, baseball fans almost never stop thinking about their team. And Howard Megdal is no exception: a lifelong and feverish Mets fan, he has been there through thick and (more often) thin. And yet-year in and year out, the Mets seem to find ways to disappoint him. The almost-victories, the mistakes, the lost years: it's all too heartbreaking. And so, mustering his energy, heart, and sportswriter's pedigree, Megdal decided to do something about it. Like become the General Manager of the Mets. It's not an elected office, but that doesn't mean you can't campaign to do it. One part baseball history and one part personal narrative, Taking the Field is at heart the story of a fan who decides to take control. Staging public rallies to gain support, and hustling for interviews and opportunities, Megdal rewrites the rules for being a fan: if you want a championship so badly, maybe it's time for more than praying at the television and buying merchandise. Maybe it's time for action. As he tells his half-crazy and half-inspiring story, Megdal intersperses the narrative with a history rooting for his team: the Tom Seaver trade, the Doc Gooden saga, the highs and lows, the mistakes, and the moments that made it worth the pain. At the same time, he learns the lessons of this history, outlining for the public his campaign pillars: logic, transparency, and passion. And he is determined to make his impact on the team. This book has the unstinting passion of A Fan's Notes, the humor and business smarts of Moneyball, and the elbow-grease appeal of Julie and Julia. In the end, it's a love letter to baseball, and a totem for every tormented fan who has ever felt like a part of the game.

The Boston Renaissance by Barry Bluestone,Mary Huff Stevenson Pdf

This volume documents metropolitan Boston's metamorphosis from a casualty of manufacturing decline in the 1970s to a paragon of the high-tech and service industries in the 1990s. The city's rebound has been part of a wider regional renaissance, as new commercial centers have sprung up outside the city limits. A stream of immigrants have flowed into the area, redrawing the map of ethnic relations in the city. While Boston's vaunted mind-based economy rewards the highly educated, many unskilled workers have also found opportunities servicing the city's growing health and education industries. Boston's renaissance remains uneven, and the authors identify a variety of handicaps (low education, unstable employment, single parenthood) that still hold minorities back. Nonetheless this book presents Boston as a hopeful example of how America's older cities can reinvent themselves in the wake of suburbanization and deindustrialization.
