Britain Under Trojan, Roman, Saxon Rule by John Milton Pdf
Excerpt from Britain Under Trojan, Roman, Saxon Rule Although the fame of John- Milton rests chiefly upon his poetry, yet his intellect was of so high an order, that no work of his but will be found well worth perusal. In the history now reprinted, will be found many passages characteristic of the writer, the materials being copious, curious, carefully arranged, written with great truthfulness, abounding energy, and sometimes with surpassing grandeur in sentiment and expression. The poet became a historian in 1639, soon after the blight of blindness had fallen upon him ; the book was published in 1670, but mutilated by the censor of the press; many remarks of the gifted writer being distasteful to the cavalier interest. The suppressed passages appeared in the edition of 1681, and ot the prose writings of Milton, published in 1738, his history of England forms a part-the copy whence were formed these pages will be found in Connect's England, vol. i. fol. edition, 1719. John Milton was born in Bread Street, London, December 9, 1608, his father being a scrivener there. From St. Paul's school, where, lie received the rudiments of his education, he was sent to Christ's College, Cambridge, taking his B.A. there in 1628, and in 1632 his M.A. degree. On the death of his mother, in 1635, his father permitted him to visit the continent, where he spent some fifteen months being received into the elite of literary circles in France and Italy. The gathering troubles of civil war recalled Milton to England, where espousing the puritan side, soon after Cromwell became firm in power, he became Latin secretary to government, a place he was eminently qualified to fill. Sir Gawain and the Classical Tradition by E.L. Risden Pdf
The 14th century English alliterative poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is admired for its morally complex plot and brilliant poetics. A chivalric romance placed in an Arthurian setting, it has since received acclaim for its commentary regarding important socio-political and religious concerns. The poem's technical brilliance blends psychological depth and vivid language to produce an effect widely considered superior to any other work of the time. Although the poem is a combination of English alliterative meter, romanticism, and a wide-ranging knowledge of Celtic lore, continental materials and Latin classics, the extent to which Classical antecedents affected or directed the poem is a point of continued controversy among literary scholars. This collection of essays by scholars of diverse interests addresses this puzzling and fascinating question. The introduction provides an expansive background for the topic, and subsequent essays explore the extent to which classical Greek, Roman, Arabic, Christian and Celtic influences are revealed in the poem's opening and closing allusions, themes, and composition. Essays discuss the way in which the anonymous author of Sir Gawain employs figural echoes of classical materials, cultural memoirs of past British tradition, and romantic re-textualizations of Trojan and British literature. It is argued that Sir Gawain may be understood as an Aeneas, Achilles, or Odysseus figure, while the British situation in the 14th century may be understood as analogous to that of ancient Troy.

Excerpt from England Before the Norman Conquest: Being a History of the Celtic, Roman and Anglo-Saxon Periods Down to the Year A. D. 1066 HE main purpose of this short preface is to express my deep Obligation to many friends who have given me their assistance in revising and correcting various parts Of this volume. Three must be specially named. Mr. T. Rice Holmes, the author of Caesar's Conquest (f Gaul, and Of Ancient Britain and Caesar's Invasions, was good enough to look through the first four chapters, forming the prehistoric and early Celtic section, to make most valuable criticisms thereon, and to give me many fruitful suggestions. This part of my volume, indeed, may be said to be founded in a large measure on his researches, for his two books above mentioned were invaluable to me.
