Britains Model Tractors, 1948-1998 by David Pullen Pdf

Founded to make mechanical toys in the middle of the 19th century, Britains Ltd first became famous as producers of toy soldiers using a new hollow casting method. In 1921 they launched the Home Farm series of farm models and in 1948 made their first tractor. From then until 1998, when production was transferred to China, the company produced 58 different tractors from 24 manufacturers. The total number of variations in the model was 230. These are avidly collected. Although prices for good examples average #30-100, there are a significant number that command over #100 each, while at the very top end a Ford 5000 Industrial is quoted at #1200-#1500. David Pullen has collected many of the models and has photographed the whole range to show in each case different angles and original packaging. He describes concisely the main features of each variant, taking them one at a time, by marque. He also includes a long section that shows the development of Britains' tractor models as well as appendices classifying them by tractor type and issue date. Finally, he gives typical valuations. This is a comprehensive book for collectors, produced in a pocket-book format. It should not only appeal to those interested in tractors but also to the wider sphere of model making and collecting.

Decolonising Geography? Disciplinary Histories and the End of the British Empire in Africa, 1948-1998 by Ruth Craggs,Hannah Neate Pdf

DECOLONISING GEOGRAPHY? “This book presents an extraordinarily sensitive account of geography’s histories in five African countries subjected to British colonial rule. Craggs and Neate draw together political and imaginative processes of decolonisation, through an innovative biographical approach that humanizes and enlivens the story of our academic discipline. It will be an invaluable resource for those seeking a deeper understanding of??decolonisation, its recent trajectories and far-reaching implications, on the African continent.” —Shari Daya, Affiliate Associate Professor in Environmental and Geographical Science, University of Cape Town “By placing the experiences, ideas, and practices of African geographers in the center of their analyses, Craggs and Neate provide an unprecedented account of historical and contemporary decolonizing struggles within Geography and the academy. This book should be required reading for all those looking to decolonize the discipline and dislodge it from its Global North histories, institutions, and ideologies.” —Mona Domosh, Professor of Geography, The Joan P. and Edward J. Foley Jr. 1933 Professor, Dartmouth College “This meticulous work explores how colonialism, decolonization and postcolonialism shaped African geography and geographers. It sheds light on efforts to ‘Africanize’ the discipline, a process which I was both witness to and a participant in.” —Stanley Okafor, Professor of Geography (Retired), University of Ibadan How did a generation of academic geographers engage with constitutional decolonisation during the end of the British empire in Africa? In Decolonising Geography? Disciplinary Histories and the End of the British Empire in Africa, 1948-1998, Ruth Craggs and Hannah Neate explore how the teaching, research, administration and activism of geographers in Africa shaped the discipline and the post-colonial geopolitics of the continent. The authors follow the professional lives of individual geographers to provide fresh insights into decolonisation in the former British Empire in Africa, drawing from extensive archival research and more than 40 oral history interviews with geographers in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania and the UK. Decolonising Geography is a must-read for any reader in the UK and Africa with an interest in the relationships between geography and decolonisation.

The Never End by John Reed Pdf

This book presents full history of the origin of Orwell’s Animal Farm, as well as a translation of the Russuian/Ukranian source work. Has George Orwell lost his saintly luster? In The Never End, rabble-rouser, dogged investigator, and consummate literary stylist John Reed collects two decades of subject-Orwell findings previously published in Pank, Guernica, Literary Hub, The Brooklyn Rail, The Rumpus, The New York Press, The Believer, Harper’s Magazine and The Paris Review. Reed’s treatment of Orwell is corrective and peerlessly contemporary; he views Orwell in a twenty-first century global context, considering Orwell’s collaboration with Cold War intelligence operations—US and UK—with unfaltering objectivity. It’s hard to imagine that Orwell—in our own moment of global doublethink—wouldn’t have wanted his devotion to contrariety applied to the literary legacy he left behind. The Never End is at once a hatchet job and a celebration. Animal Farm, based on a previously unknown Russian short story? Animal Farm, deployed by the CIA, MI6 and the Congress for Cultural Freedom? Orwell, turning over blacklists in a McCarthy-esque act of betrayal? The Cold War? Does it last forever? Russia, the “Axis of Evil,” and now China? But. Orwell. Course syllabi. Literary laurels. Snitch. Why do we keep coming back? For the wrong reasons? Or because we know Old Benjamin would want us to know the truth?

The Killing of Constable Keith Blakelock by Tony Moore Pdf

A closely observed account by someone working at senior level in the Met at the time. Deals with the biggest breakdown in community relations and law and order in modern English social and policing history. Looks at the entire sequence of events from their first rumblings to their aftermath and legacy. Published to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the tragic death of PC Blakelock October 2015 marks the 30th anniversary of the murder of PC Keith Blakelock during rioting on the Broadwater Farm Estate, Tottenham, against a backdrop of unrest in major UK cities and nadir in relations between police and black communities. After becoming detached from Serial 502 Keith Blakelock was kicked and hacked to death by a mob using clubs, iron bars, knives and a machete or similar weapon. His killers have never been brought to justice. This minutely researched book from former Metropolitan Police commander Tony Moore is based on new materials, private communications and matchless sources. It looks at both sides of the story of a breakdown in law and order at this ‘symbolic location’, its history, background, influences, causes and who was most to blame. Tony Moore’s book examines the stark policing choices and dilemmas as well as the 350 arrests of mainly black people, the wall of silence, fear, trials, appeals and campaign for the release of Winston Silcott, Engin Raghip and Mark Braithwaite (The Tottenham Three) and later jury acquittal of Nicky Jacobs. It looks at the calamitous legacy, questionable strategies and the acquittal of two members of the Met’s CID charged with perverting the course of justice. From petrol bombs, burning barricades and unfathomable violence to the backdrop of immigration, recriminations and lessons of hindsight, this is a powerful book that should be read by anyone concerned with police community relations.
