Meet the Bronies by Patrick Edwards,,Daniel P. Chadborn,Courtney N. Plante Pdf

In 2010, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic premiered on television. A large, avid fandom soon emerged--not the pre-teen female demographic earlier versions of the franchise had been created for, but a roughly 80 percent male audience, most of them age 14-24. With this came questions about the nature of the audience who would come to call themselves "bronies." Brony Studies was born. Approaching the fandom from a perspective of clinical, social and experimental psychology, this study presents eight years of research, written for academics and fans alike. An understanding of the brony fan culture has broader application for other fan communities as well.

My Little Brony by K. M. Hayes Pdf

Drew Morris doesn’t just feel like an outsider in his football-crazed Texas town—he actually is. He sucks at sports, even though his dad is the high school football coach. And his supposed “teen growth spurt” has yet to be seen, so he’s sure his freshman year will be filled with seniors stuffing him in lockers. However, Drew is spared from the bullying he expects. Instead, a girl named Skye—who constantly dons horse ears and talks about My Little Pony—becomes everyone’s target. Drew feels bad for her, but he’s not about to stand up and take her place. At least not until he discovers what these My Little Ponies are all about. Babysitting his younger sister one night, Drew is forced to watch My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. Much to his surprise, he finds himself actually paying attention to the show . . . and maybe even wanting to watch another episode after his sister is in bed. As school drags on, lonely and boring, he keeps sneaking episodes on his tablet until he has watched every single one. Not only that, but he’s even started drawing the ponies in his spare time. He knows if anyone finds out how much he likes the show, he’ll be a dead man walking like Skye. As it becomes harder to keep his secret while he has to watch Skye get bullied for the one thing that has made him happy all year, Drew faces some important choices. Read about Drew’s search for friends and self-acceptance in My Little Brony. Sky Pony Press, with our Good Books, Racehorse and Arcade imprints, is proud to publish a broad range of books for young readers—picture books for small children, chapter books, books for middle grade readers, and novels for young adults. Ponyville Confidential by Sherilyn Connelly Pdf

Beloved by young girls around the world, Hasbro's My Little Pony franchise has been mired in controversy since its debut in the early 1980s. Critics dismissed the cartoons as toy advertisements, and derided their embrace of femininity. The 2010 debut of the openly feminist My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic renewed the backlash, as its broad appeal challenged entrenched notions about gendered entertainment. This first comprehensive study of My Little Pony explores the history and cultural significance of the franchise through Season 5 of Friendship Is Magic and the first three Equestria Girls films. The brand has continued to be on the receiving end of a sexist double standard regarding commercialism in children's entertainment, while masculine cartoons such as the Transformers have been spared similar criticism.

The Retro-Futurism of Cuteness by Jen Boyle,Wan-Chuan Kao Pdf

Is it possible to conceive of a Hello Kitty Middle Ages or a Tickle Me Elmo Renaissance? The Oxford English Dictionary dates the first reference to "cute" in the sense of "attractive, pretty, charming" to 1834. More recently, Sianne Ngai has offered a critical overview of the cuteness of the twentieth-century avant-garde within the context of consumer culture. But if cuteness can get under the skin, what kinds of surfaces does it best infiltrate, particularly in the framework of historical forms, events, and objects that traditionally have been read as emergences around "big" aesthetics of formal symmetries, high affects, and resemblances? The Retrofuturism of Cuteness seeks to undo the temporal strictures surrounding aesthetic and affective categories, to displace a strict focus on commodification and cuteness, and to interrogate how cuteness as a minor aesthetics can refocus our perceptions and readings of both premodern and modern media, literature, and culture. Taking seriously the retro and the futuristic temporalities of cuteness, this volume puts in conversation projects that have unearthed remnants of a "cult of cute"-positioned historically and critically in between transitions into secularization, capitalist frameworks of commodification, and the enchantment of objects-and those that have investigated the uncanny haunting of earlier aesthetics in future-oriented modes of cuteness. The Latin acutus, the etymological root of cute, embraces the sharpened, the pointed, the nimble, the discriminating, and the piercing. But as Michael O'Rourke notes, cuteness evokes a proximity that is at once potentially invasive and contaminating and yet softening and transfiguring. Deploying cuteness as a mode of inquiry across time, this volume opens up unexpected lines of inquiry and unusual critical and creative aporias, from Christian asceticism, medieval cycle drama, and Shakespeare to manga, Bollywood, and Second Life. The projects collected here point to a spectrum of aesthetic-affective assemblages related to racial, ethnic, gender, sexual, and class dimensions that exceed or trouble our contemporary perceptions of such registers within object-subject and subject-object entanglements. MachoPoni: A Prance with Death (Poniworld Chronicles #1) by Lotus Rose Pdf

The first volume of the dementedly funny 80’s nostalgia series, The Poniworld Chronicles, introduces us to MachoPoni. He’s a purple pony who tries to act tough, but has a heart of gold. And his heart has a soft spot for a female pony named Dust. He’s loved her ever since they were children, though many would call him a fool for doing so. Because most ponies would call Dust cruel and manipulative. But the part of her that MachoPoni fell in love with, is a part deep inside that she doesn’t show to others. So when Dust is kidnapped and taken to the land of undead ponies, MachoPoni has no choice but to rescue her. If you grew up watching 80’s My Little Pony cartoons, you’ll love this irreverent, twisted take on ponies and 80’s pop culture. It’s fun to catch all the references to the 80’s, and specifically to the year 1983. Seriously, every book in the series takes place in that year, because in Poniworld, it’s always 1983. These books are darkly humorous, twisted parodies that children shouldn’t be allowed to read. They’re for those of you who want to revisit your childhood, but from the perspective of the slightly-off adult you’ve become. They’re truly “children’s books for adults,” delivered with a twisted sense of humor. But don’t worry. If you didn’t grow up in the 80’s, there’s plenty of fun to be had for you too. Prepare to learn why the 80’s were so gnarly!
