Excerpt from Bryant Centennial Cummington: August the Sixteenth 1894, November the Third 1794, November the Third 1894 No word of introduction can add to the beauty or completeness of the tributes contained in this little volume. To many of the present generation, Bryant is still a gracious memory, but when the time shall arrive, in which his name and work is only a tradition to the inhabitants of his native town, and another centenary is reached, the curious antiquary or the devoted pilgrim, who seeks the spot where the first centennial was remembered, may wish to trace its landmarks, and some record of it may then be found needful. At the annual town meeting it was voted to observe the hundredth anniversary of Bryant's birth by a literary festival, and a committee of five of the citizens was appointed to carry out this design. The occasion was unique, not many days of the kind having been celebrated, for Bryant's birth marked the beginning of American Poetry, and American Literature was still in its childhood one hundred years ago. The day chosen was August sixteenth, as the pleasant summer time was deemed more suitable for an outdoor gathering, than the day of November on which the poet was born, which is often bleak and forbidding in its aspect. The spot selected had already become historic, for the poet and his brothers had traced, upon the trees around, rude hieroglyphics in years long past. "In Before Modernism: Inventing American Lyric, Virginia Jackson argues that in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, Black poetics, in antagonism with White poetics, produced the conditions for the invention of modern American poetry. This is not a history of American poetry that begins with the Puritans and stretches to the present, or that jumps from the British Romantics to Walt Whitman, or that restricts the influence of African American poetry to a separate tradition; instead, this book emphasizes the many ways in which early Black poets invented what Phillis Wheatley Peters called "the deep design" of American lyric. Through readings of the poetics of Wheatley Peters, George Moses Horton, James Monroe Whitfield, and Frances Ellen Watkins Harper-as well as the poetics of now-neglected but once-popular White poets William Cullen Bryant and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow-Jackson suggests that Black poetics inspired the direction that American poetics has taken for the last two centuries. Thus this book represents not only a new history but a new theory of American poetry. Over the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, as an idea of poetry based on genres of poems (ballads, elegies, odes, hymns, drinking songs, epistles, etc.) gave way to an idea of poetry based on genres of people (Black, White, male, female, Indigenous, etc.), almost all poetry became lyric poetry. Like everything else in America, what we now think lyric is can be traced back to the twisted paths that have determined what we now think people are and can be. The final chronologically arranged volume in the series, it will present the last stage of Olmsted's career, with a firm that included his former students Henry Sargent Codman and Charles Eliot as new partners.
