The Buccaneers of America by John Exquemeling Pdf

Excerpt from The Buccaneers of America: A True Account of the Most Remarkable Assaults Committed of Late Years Upon the Coasts of the West Indies by the Buccaneers of Jamaica and Tortuga (Both English and French); Wherein Are Contained More Especially the Unparalleled Exploits of Sir Henry Morg The first three Parts of this work were originally written in Dutch by Alex. Olivier Exquemelin (1645-1707) - anglicized as John Esquemeling; and published in Amsterdam in 1678 under the title De Americaensche Zeerovers. A Spanish translation by A. de Buena-Maison, under the title Piratas de la America, appeared in small 4to, at Colonia Agrippina 1681, and translations into other European languages followed, each magnifying the deeds of its own national hero, sometimes at the expense of Esquemeling's text. The Fourth Part consists of the Journal of Basil Ringrose, "gent.," one of the English Buccaneers; and gives an account of their principal exploits in the South Seas, with which Esquemeling dealt only in outline. Ringrose was with the Buccaneers at Darien in 1680, and returned to England in 1682: his Journal appeared as the second volume of Esquemeling's work in 1685. He sailed in 1684 for the South Seas in the Cygnet, whose Captain joined the Buccaneers: he was killed by the Spaniards in Mexico in 1686. The present edition is a verbatim reprint - modernized in respect of punctuation, and obsolete spellings and verbal and typographic eccentricities - of the second edition of the English translation (London: printed for William Crooke, at the Green Dragon without Temple-bar, 1684), which contains two additional chapters (XI and XII) to the first edition (also 1684) relating the adventures of Captain Cook, Captain Sharp, and others. Ringrose's Fourth Part is reprinted from the first edition, which is excessively rare, valued to-day at about 60 (in good condition). A few notes have been added at the foot of the pages where obscurities - chiefly verbal - occur. The essay on this book from the pen of the late Mr Andrew Lang is reprinted from his Essays in Little, by kind permission of Messrs Longmans, Green and Co., its publishers. Hemispheric Regionalism by Gretchen J. Woertendyke Pdf

In this broad ranging study, Gretchen Woertendyke reconfigures US literary history as a product of hemispheric relations. Hemispheric Regionalism: Romance and the Geography of Genre, brings together a rich archive of popular culture, fugitive slave narratives, advertisements, political treatises, and literature to construct a new literary history from a hemispheric and regional perspective. At the center of this history is romance, a popular and versatile literary genre uniquely capable of translating the threat posed by the Haitian Revolution--or the expansionist possibilities of Cuban annexation--for a rapidly increasing readership. Through romance, she traces imaginary and real circuits of exchange and remaps romance's position in nineteenth century life and letters as irreducible to, nor fully mediated by, a concept of nation. The energies associated with Cuba and Haiti, manifest destiny and apocalypse, bring historical depth to an otherwise short national history. As a result, romance becomes remarkably influential in inculcating a sense of new world citizenry. The study shifts our critical focus from novel and nation, to romance and region, inevitable, she argues, when we attend to the tangled, messy relations across geographic and historical boundaries. Woertendyke reads the archives of Gabriel Prosser, Nat Turner, and Denmark Vesey along with less frequently treated writers such as John Howison, William Gilmore Simms, and J.H. Ingraham. The study provides a new context for understanding works by Washington Irving, Edgar Allan Poe, Herman Melville, and James Fenimore Cooper and brings together the theories of Charles Brockden Brown, the editorial work of Maturin M. Ballou, and the historical romances of Walter Scott. In Hemispheric Regionalism, Woertendyke demonstrates that US literature has always been the product of hemispheric and regional relations and that all forms of romance are central to this history.

The Early English Caribbean, 1570–1700 Vol 3 by Carla Gardina Pestana,Sharon V Salinger Pdf

This four-volume collection brings together rare pamphlets from the formative years of the English involvement in the Caribbean. Texts presented in the volumes cover the first impressions of the region, imperial rivalries between European traders and settlers and the experience of day-to-day life in the colonies. Volume 3: Living in the Caribbean Once settlements were firmly established articles began to appear promoting the way of life to those back at home. Numerous texts advertised the climate, the crops and the social life, and the recruitment of settlers generated a literature offering land, liberty and other benefits to those who migrated. Recruiting labour on the islands presented a particular problem. A transatlantic trade in servants was developed initially and some groups, including Quakers, and those convicted after the Monmouth Rebellion, were coerced into settling, but in the end the colonists came to rely on slavery. Sources document the growing involvement of English traders in the sale of enslaved Africans as well as the development of laws and the administration of justice on the islands.

Atlantic Piracy in the Early Nineteenth Century by Sarah Craze Pdf

Skilfully uses this notorious episode to illuminate the nature and extent of piracy in the period. The pirate attack on the British brig Morning Star, en route from Ceylon to London, near Ascension Island in 1828 was one of the most shocking episodes of piracy in the nineteenth century. Although the captain and many members of the crew were murdered by the pirates led by the notorious Benito de Soto, some survived, escaped and sailed the ship back to Britain. This book, based on extensive original research in Britain, Spain and Brazil, retells the story of the Morning Star, provides much new detail and corrects errors present in the many contemporary accounts of the attack. It sets the attack in the wider context of piracy in the period, and discusses many issues which the episode highlights: how pirates' careers began and developed; how they were pursued and tried, often with difficulty; what became of their treasure; how stories of the attack and of the survivors were sensationalised; how the women passengers on the ship endured their ordeal at the hands of the pirates and then, back in Britain, had to endure potential loss of their reputations.s on the ship endured their ordeal at the hands of the pirates and then, back in Britain, had to endure potential loss of their reputations.s on the ship endured their ordeal at the hands of the pirates and then, back in Britain, had to endure potential loss of their reputations.s on the ship endured their ordeal at the hands of the pirates and then, back in Britain, had to endure potential loss of their reputations.
