Buddhism Plain and Simple by Steve Hagen Pdf

"This is the clearest and most precise exposition of Buddhism I have ever read. If you're looking for enlightenment rather than just scholarly knowledge, you'd better read this."--Robert M. Pirsig, author of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance This is a book about awareness. It's about being "awake" and in touch with what is going on here and now. Practical and down-to-earth, it deals exclusively with the present, not with speculation, theory, or belief in some far off time and place. The teachings of the Buddha are plain and straightforward, and because they remain focused on the moment, they are just as relevant now as they have ever been. Buddhism Plain and Simple: The Practice of Being Aware, Right Now, Every Day is the book for anyone wanting to discover, or rediscover, the essence of Buddhism.

The Buddhist Maritime Silk Road by Lewis R. Lancaster Pdf

The Buddhist Maritime Silk Road is a collection of lectures Dr. Lancaster delivered at the Department of Religious Studies at the University of the West, California. These lectures describe the search for models that can deal with the study of how Buddhism spread from the Ganges Basin and established itself throughout the Southeast area of Eurasia. Additionally, the book contains many images of Buddhist sites, many of which were taken by the film crews and exhibition teams led by Professor Sarah Kenderdine and Professor Jeffrey Shaw, the leading figures in new media art. These images formed part of the large museum exhibits that opened at the City University of Hong Kong and the Buddha Museum at Fo Guang Shan in Taiwan. The book recounts the magnificent history of the world of Maritime Buddhism from a diverse range of aspects—the various Buddhist traditions, pilgrims and monks, causes and conditions, norms and rituals, cross-cultural relations between East and West, as well as the intricacies of navigation technology, and migrations of the Austronesian peoples—all remarkable and crucial elements of the transmission of Buddhism brought to new heights of importance. In this book, the iconic cycle formed by the northern overland and southern maritime trading routes was described by Dr. Lancaster as “The Great Circle of Buddhism.”

Three Ways to the Pure Land: The Three Essential Principles for Cultivating Pure Causes [Revised Edition] by Shih Cheng Yen Pdf

Dharma Master Cheng Yen's teachings in the Three Ways to the Pure Land: The Three Essential Principles for Cultivating Pure Causes are based on the 'three blessings from pure actions' described in the Amitayurdhyana Sutra (Sutra of Contemplation of the Buddha of Infinite Life). In the traditional interpretation, cultivating 'pure causes' will allow us to be reborn in the Pure Land of Amita Buddha, the Buddha of Infinite Life and Infinite Light. However, the way that Master Cheng Yen teaches about pure causes is different - her focus is on how we can work to establish a pure land right here and now, in this world, in this life. The teachings presented in this book can be interpreted as a graduated course of action, allowing us to first perfect our human nature and cultivate blessings through good deeds, then, to attain liberation from the suffering of birth and death, and finally, to reach the state of Buddhahood through walking the Bodhisattva-path. Still, Master Cheng Yen emphasizes that every stage in this practice is a step on the Bodhisattva-path, creating the positive affinities that will allow us to save and transform others and at the same time eliminate our afflictions and negative habitual tendencies. In this way, we can cultivate pure causes, perfect our character, and manifest our full potential as human beings. In this new edition of the book, the cover and inner design, the translation, contents and organization have been updated to make it more accessible for an audience unfamiliar with Buddhist teachings. Therefore, we have avoided the use of specialized Buddhist terms as much as possible, and have added footnotes to explain specific terms that might be unknown to the reader.

The Four Profound Thoughts Which Turn the Mind Towards Amida Dharma by Jōshō Adrian Cîrlea Pdf

The Four Profound Thoughts are basic teachings, something like a preliminary to any Buddhist path or practice. It has the effect of turning the mind towards the Buddha Dharma and should be a constant companion no matter if one is a beginner or an older follower. Sometimes they are reffered to as the Four Contemplations, the Four Understandings or the Four Reminders. Because in this book I explain them in the context of the Pure Land Dharma Gate of Jodo Shinshu (Amida Dharma), I decided to call them the Four Profound Thoughts which Turn the Mind Towards the Amida Dharma. These Profound Thoughts are:1. Preciousness of human birth2. Impermanence and death3. Karma - the law of cause and effect4. Samsara is sufferingIf one contemplates, understands and never forgets these four, then one is a serious follower of Shakyamuni Buddha and Amida Buddha. Such a contemplation, understanding and remembering is not something special, but a simple knowing that our situation is defined by the above four truths. My goal in writing these teachings is to use the awarenes they provide to convince my Dharma friends of the importance of taking refuge in Amida Buddha and aspire to be born in His Pure Land. I hope that the passages I carefully chose from various sacred texts and ancient masters, as well as my explanations, will have a big impact on them not only at the intelectual level, but also at deeper, more emotional one. Amida Dharma is not a mere object of study, but the most important medicine ever offered to sentient beings. Life in human form, impermanence and death, the law of karma and the sufferings of samsara are serious business and should be treated with utmost seriousness. This is why reading this book should not only be a process of accumulating informations, but also engaging the reader into a profound contemplation on these four truths. Read and think deeply to the rare chance you have to be born in human form. Read and become aware of your own impermanence. Read and let yourself be shocked by the implacable law of karma and the various sufferings of samsaric existence. Read and realize you have no other choice but to take refuge in Amida Buddha and aspire to be born in His safe Enlightened realm.
