Budo and the Badge by Patrick J. Ciser Pdf

Lt. Patrick J. Ciser (Ret.) of the City of Clifton Police Department, in New Jersey, is also known to his many karate students as Sensei (Teacher). Ciser achieved national and international fame by representing the United States in five international karate tournaments, winning gold medals in South America and Europe. Pat Ciser, as he is known in North Jersey, grew up and became a police officer in Clifton in 1977. Growing as a police officer, he started to realize that with his martial arts skills, he could save lives, surprisingly, on both sides of the law. Newspaper accounts of Cisers exploits over the years bear witness to the true stories recounted in this book. Headlines and quotes give a glimpse of his illustrious career as he was continually called upon, in life and death situations. The Clifton Journal read, Pat Ciser, Cliftons answer to Superman New Jerseys Record wrote, Veteran officer compared to Chuck Norris; while the Heard News read, Action hero calling it quits, when announcing his retirement in 2008. Join Ciser as he recalls mastering karate, kicking in doors, and dodging bullets and blades. The only difference between the stories in Budo and the Badge, and the ones on the big screen, are that these stories are real.

Kendo by Alexander C. Bennett Pdf

Kendo is the first in-depth historical, cultural, and political account in English of the Japanese martial art of swordsmanship, from its beginnings in military training and arcane medieval schools to its widespread practice as a global sport today. Alexander Bennett shows how kendo evolved through a recurring process of "inventing tradition," which served the changing ideologies and needs of Japanese warriors and governments over the course of history. Kendo follows the development of Japanese swordsmanship from the aristocratic-aesthetic pretensions of medieval warriors in the Muromachi period, to the samurai elitism of the Edo regime, and then to the nostalgic patriotism of the Meiji state. Kendo was later influenced in the 1930s and 1940s by ultranationalist militarists and ultimately by the postwar government, which sought a gentler form of nationalism to rekindle appreciation of traditional culture among Japan’s youth and to garner international prestige as an instrument of "soft power." Today kendo is becoming increasingly popular internationally. But even as new organizations and clubs form around the world, cultural exclusiveness continues to play a role in kendo’s ongoing evolution, as the sport remains closely linked to Japan’s sense of collective identity.

King's College Budo by G. P. McGregor Pdf

This work traces the history and evolution of one of East Africa's most prestigious schools through the first 100 years of its existence. Written from an insider perspective, it traces the development of the school from its missionary roots, through its place in the Kingdom of Buganda, to the widening of the admissions policy to accept pupils from all areas of Uganda and beyond, and finally, the shift to co-education. The book celebrates the successes of the Budo project and the extraordinary range of high-level men and women it has produced, and analyses the administrative and political problems the schools has had to grapple with over the years. The book is described by Professor A.B.K. Kasozi, a linguist and educationalist of considerable renown in the region, as ?a micro-description at an institutional level of the growth of formal education in Uganda'.

Impossible Persons by Daniel Harbour Pdf

A groundbreaking, comprehensive formal theory of grammatical person that recasts its empirical foundations and re-envisions its theoretical core. Impossible Persons, Daniel Harbour's comprehensive and groundbreaking formal theory of grammatical person, upends understanding of a universal and ubiquitous grammatical category. Breaking with much past work, Harbour establishes three core theses, one empirical, one theoretical, and one metatheoretical. Together, these redefine the data subsumed under the rubric of “person,” simplify the feature inventory that a theory of person must posit, and restructure the metatheory in which feature theory as a whole resides. At its heart, Impossible Persons poses a simple question of the possible versus the actual: in how many ways could languages configure their person systems, in how many do they configure them, and what explains the size and shape of the shortfall? Harbour's empirical thesis—that the primary object of study for persons are partitions, not syncretisms—transforms a sea of data into a categorical problem of the attested and the absent. Positing, innovatively, that features denote actions, not predicates, he shows that two features alone generate all and only the attested systems. This apparently poor inventory yields rich explanatory dividends, covering the morphological composition of person, its interaction with number, its connection to space, and properties of its semantics and linearization. Moreover, the core properties of this approach are shared with Harbour's earlier work on number features. Jointly, these results establish an important metatheoretical corollary concerning the balance between richness of feature semantics and restrictiveness of feature inventories. This corollary holds deep implications for how linguists should approach feature theory in future.
