Burlesque Baking by Charlotte White Pdf

Burlesque is a celebration of beauty and decadence, which are incidentally the best qualities of a cake, too! Charlotte White understands this, and has paired these two artforms to create 25 tantalizing cakes and bakes. With a touch of lace, a shimmer of diamonds, or a flourish of vivid, exotic flowers, these cakes are all inspired by the costumes of genuine burlesque performers and openly push indulgence, teasing the tastebuds and widening the eyes—after all, the art of Burlseque is the art of putting on a show! This is a baking book for women who are unashamedly feminine but staunchly anti-twee. Starting with basic recipes for the cakes and cookies, these baking and sugar-crafting projects are arranged into four levels of complexity, and written in a clear step-by-step style. Start your burlesque career at the old fashioned Gaiety Theatre, with simple designs for Diamondback Cookies or a Cherry Shakewell Cake, before progressing to Minsky’s Burlesque Theatre for a performance of Tempest Rose Cupcakes and Betty Mae Mini-cakes. Moulin Rouge offers up the Lady Lamour Cake and Passion Flower Cupcakes, before, finally a fully fledged star, you are ready to try the treats of the Café de Paris! Charlotte has one rule by which she lives: indulgence and decadence should be encouraged at all times and in all places—especially the kitchen!

Badly Behaved Women by Anna-Marie Crowhurst Pdf

Badly Behaved Women is the illustrated story of the past 100 years of the women's movement, from suffrage, alleged bra burning and the politics of hair to Beyoncé, body positivity and #MeToo. In the early twentieth century, through ceaseless dedication and fearless campaigning, the women's movement achieved what had previously been unimaginable: a woman's right to vote. Four waves of feminism and a century on, the rich cultural history of this movement is truly worthy of celebration. Accompanied by stunning photographs, personal testimony essays from key figures and archive material from sources around the world, Anna-Marie Crowhurst's compelling and entertaining retelling of this multi-stranded, global and ongoing story also examines the flaws of the movement and the future of feminism.

Two Cities by Daniel S. Malachuk Pdf

Since the late eighteenth century the ideals of political democracy and individual flourishing have become so entangled that most people no longer differentiate them. The American Transcendentalists did. Two Cities is the first comprehensive account of the original but still underrated political thought of this movement, especially that of its three major authors: Ralph Waldo Emerson, Margaret Fuller, and Henry David Thoreau. For decades, Daniel S. Malachuk contends, readers have misinterpreted the Transcendentalists as worshipping democracy and secularizing personhood. Two Cities proves the opposite. Focusing on their major writings, Malachuk presents the Transcendentalists as wresting apart and thus clarifying democracy as a profane project and individuality as a sacred one. Building upon this basic insight, the book affirms many recent but discrete conclusions about the movement’s various contributions (especially to liberalism, environmentalism, and public religion) and shows that we will understand how these commitments hang together only when we “re-transcendentalize the Transcendentalists.” In five useful chapters—on the two-cities tradition within the history of liberalism, on the rival and subsequently dominant “overlap” theories of Lincoln and others, and on the unique contributions to two-cities thought by each of the major authors—Two Cities reintroduces readers to the Transcendentalists as among the most original and important contributors to American political thought.

Amateur Cinema by Charles Tepperman Pdf

From the very beginning of cinema, there have been amateur filmmakers at work. It wasn’t until Kodak introduced 16mm film in 1923, however, that amateur moviemaking became a widespread reality, and by the 1950s, over a million Americans had amateur movie cameras. In Amateur Cinema, Charles Tepperman explores the meaning of the "amateur" in film history and modern visual culture. In the middle decades of the twentieth century—the period that saw Hollywood’s rise to dominance in the global film industry—a movement of amateur filmmakers created an alternative world of small-scale movie production and circulation. Organized amateur moviemaking was a significant phenomenon that gave rise to dozens of clubs and thousands of participants producing experimental, nonfiction, or short-subject narratives. Rooted in an examination of surviving films, this book traces the contexts of "advanced" amateur cinema and articulates the broad aesthetic and stylistic tendencies of amateur films.

Masters of American Cookery by Mary Frances Kennedy Fisher Pdf

Ever since American soldiers returned home after World War II with a passion for pÛtä and escargots instead of pork and beans, our preferences have moved from cooked to raw, from canned to fresh, from bland to savory, from water to wine. And guiding us through our culinary revolution have been four of the world's finest food experts: Julia Child, Craig Claiborne, James Beard, and M. F. K. Fisher. ø In Masters of American Cookery, Betty Fussell demonstrates vividly how each of these chefs has made a unique and invaluable contribution to the American way of cooking and eating. In more than two hundred recipes?in chapters on appetizers, soups, salads, sauces, meats, poultry, fish, breads, cheeses and wines, and desserts?Fussell shares the artistry of these culinary masters. She also traces the evolution of each dish and provides insightful, often witty asides about the origins of the recipes. ø In the tradition of Waverley Root and M. F. K. Fisher herself, Fussell has combined elements of history, memoir, and the cookbook to create a food lover?s delight. As entertaining as it is instructive, Masters of American Cookery belongs on the bookshelf of anyone who cares about good food. Fussell provides a preface for this Bison Books edition.

Butter Baked Goods by Rosie Daykin Pdf

Butter Baked Goods is a gorgeously illustrated cookbook, packed full of delicious recipes for irresistible baking that you will want to make, time and time again. These are recipes for the classics, rich in the nostalgic flavors of your childhood: from Peanut Butter Sandwich Cookies, Cinny Buns and S'mores; to Classic Chocolate Cake, Lemon Meringue Cupcakes and Good Ol' Apple Pie. Butter began as a tiny bakery in Vancouver, opened and operated by Rosie Daykin, a passionate home baker since she was six years old. The bakery is a pink- and pistachio-colored slice of heaven; its counters are piled high with glass cases and cake stands, filled with sugary treats. But word soon got out (the baking was too good to keep quiet!) and Butter is now famous across North America for being the home of the very best gourmet marshmallow. Butter's marshmallows are now stocked in over 300 (and counting) stores across Canada and the US. The recipe for Rosie's famous marshmallows is just one, of 101, tucked into the pages of this beautiful book. Every recipe in Butter Baked Goods has simple, step-by-step instructions, and is written in an accessible and easy-to-follow style, so that everyone can create Butter's delectable treats--from grandmothers who have been baking all their lives, to teenagers making their very first cupcakes. Rosie's baking is not about trickery, flamboyance or hard-to-find ingredients, but about great-tasting, homemade treats to celebrate life's milestones: birthdays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, baby showers, bridal showers--or just a gloomy, rainy afternoon when you need a little pick-me-up.
