Business Under Crisis Volume I by Demetris Vrontis,Alkis Thrassou,Yaakov Weber,S. M. Riad Shams,Evangelos Tsoukatos,Leonidas Efthymiou Pdf

This book examines businesses under crisis conditions through a composition of contextual accounts. The Editors argue that crises are transformative, evolutionary and even revolutionary in the development of organizations, industries and markets. Moreover, crises reform the context in which organizations operate, including customers and their behaviour. As such, they need to be viewed as conduits to change, accelerators of evolution and catalysts of innovation in organizations. Emphasising the importance of 'context' and its complexities, the book argues that for crisis, as a concept and notion, context is crucial to any understanding of the meaning that should or could be attached to it. Bringing together scientific research and case studies on contextual transformations, the book provides a balanced selection of works across business disciplines, including management, strategy, marketing and finance as well as geographic regions, market types and industries. The book examines the context of crises, its indicators and triggers, and encompasses topics such as Artificial Intelligence, e-mobility, changes in consumption patterns, militancy and the impact of pandemics. Demetris Vrontis is Professor and Vice Rector for Faculty and Research at the University of Nicosia in Cyprus. Alkis Thrassou is Professor in the School of Business at the University of Nicosia, Cyprus, and a Senior Research Fellow of the EuroMed Academy of Business (EMAB). Yaakov Weber is Professor and Director of the Research Unit, School of Business Administration, College of Management, Israel. S. M. Riad Shams is Lecturer at the Newcastle Business School, Northumbria University, UK. Evangelos Tsoukatos teaches Management at the University of Applied Sciences Crete, Greece, and is adjunct faculty at the University of Nicosia and the Hellenic Open University. Leonidas Efthymiou is Assistant Professor in Hospitality and Management.

Business Under Crisis, Volume III by Demetris Vrontis,Alkis Thrassou,Yaakov Weber,S. M. Riad Shams,Evangelos Tsoukatos,Leonidas Efthymiou Pdf

From recurring episodes of great depression, oil crises, political crises, wars, debt crises, to the ongoing climate change, there is a constant pressure on businesses to cope with critical events. However, throughout history, crises have been pivotal in advancing businesses and societies. This contributed volume approaches crisis not simply as a source of problems, but also as a set of choices. It seeks to explore critical events as possible opportunities for sustainability, through process improvement, creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship. Chapters reveal that times of crisis provide opportunities for new start-ups, creativity, resilience, organisational change, and revitalisation. This book also emphasises the importance of sustainability, driven either by the market or as a response to critical events. Within the wider attempt to explore avenues for Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Sustainability at times of crisis, the book is loosely organised in three thematic sections: organisational responses to crisis; digitisation, and how technology facilitates or hinders sustainability under conditions of crisis; and SMEs, Family Firms (FF), Entrepreneurship, which explores how critical events offer opportunities for innovation.

Business Under Crisis, Volume II by Demetris Vrontis,Alkis Thrassou,Yaakov Weber,S. M. Riad Shams,Evangelos Tsoukatos,Leonidas Efthymiou Pdf

Crises present significant challenges for organizations. But, while critical events are inevitable, not every business is sufficiently equipped for when things don’t go according to plan. This book focuses on business under crisis conditions, along with organizational responses and adaptation. Adaptation can be seen as a learning process. It encompasses meaningful ways that help companies sustain their viability over the long term. Companies that respond quickly, often achieve more than just surviving. Some organizations will learn from a crisis, develop reactive resilience, and emerge stronger from the period of turbulence. They will be able to explore possibilities and create new patterns of relationships. Bringing together descriptive and prescriptive research studies, chapters explore adaptation in different sectors, including public health, tourism, garment, Information Technology, high-tech companies, global trade networks, hospitality, security and the social sector. Ultimately, the book covers wide range of topics, linking strategy, entrepreneurship, and leadership to reciprocal organizational adaptations that help us delineate crisis, as well as its interconnections in differing settings.

This book provides a clear, critical, and timely analysis of the state of corporate sustainability within the context of the climate crisis. It offers not only a substantive critique of the current efforts but also clarity about the changes needed and how to implement them. The book goes beyond the more common debate on shareholder capitalism vs. stakeholder capitalism to explain the shortcomings of the current approach to sustainability in business, which the author describes as sustainability-as-usual. Using strategic design lenses, the author proposes a new model of awakened sustainability, which offers a transformational shift in corporate sustainability to ensure companies fairly and effectively address the climate crisis. The book presents the numerous changes needed in the environment in which companies operate to enable awakened sustainability and how these changes can be realized. Grounded in the scientific community’s calls for urgent action on climate change, this groundbreaking text provides scholars with an evaluation of current and future trends in corporate sustainability. It connects the dots between the progress made in the last five decades and the opportunities entailed in the work on a regenerative and just vision for companies in this decade and beyond.

Crises and Disruptions in International Business by Murad A. Mithani,Rajneesh Narula,Irina Surdu,Alain Verbeke Pdf

Crises and disruptions can lead to important changes in economic, social and institutional environments. This collection of influential JIBS articles and original commentaries highlights that MNEs are affected by, and respond to, crises and disruptions differently than domestic firms due to their geographically dispersed operations and wider range of experiences from being active in diverse environments. MNEs can exhibit greater flexibility to ‘avoid’ locations characterised by crises and disruptions, and when affected, they can deploy a more refined set of responses relative to domestic firms. Each article is accompanied by a brand new editorial piece, bringing the research right up to date and reflecting on the impact of the article today. In this way, the book offers an integrated perspective on the antecedents, outcomes and potential opportunities associated with a variety of crises and disruptions such as disease outbreaks, natural disasters, climate change and political unrest. An ideal resource for students and researchers, this book offers new perspectives, policy and practical recommendations as well as a discussion of future trends. The volume concludes with a novel analysis on how businesses can move forward in a post-Covid world.
