Byways of Belief (Classic Reprint) by Conrad Noel Pdf

Excerpt from Byways of Belief If the search for truth be the supreme object of the Christian Religion, there is, of course, no inaccuracy in Mr Lloyd Thomas's analogy with the doctrine of evolution and the British Association. But Catholics would altogether deny that the Church was built as a Society for spiritual research. It was surely built to promulgate truth and to band men together as comrades in arms. Similes are dangerous things, but the metaphor of an army is much more fitting to the idea of the Church than the metaphor of a hunting party in doubt as to the quarry it hunts. It is not a common search but a common find that unites us. This is not to be taken as meaning that the Catholics of any particular age are to pride themselves on the possession of the whole truth, but the very object of their being banded together is that they may teach and live that truth which they do possess, and that, by living it, truth may be added to them in greater measure. The search for truth has been denied by Church ofificialdom, and its advocates have exalted it out of due proportion into the first essential of a Christian Church. Byways in British Archaeology (Classic Reprint) by Walter Johnson,Winthrop Professor of History and Professor of African and African American Studies Walter Johnson Pdf

Excerpt from Byways in British Archaeology HE following chapters, though superficially presenting the appearance of disconnected essays, really possess a strong bond of continuity. Running through the whole, implied, where not actually expressed, will be found an insistence on the principle which, in a former work, I ventured to call folk-memory. This folk-memory - unconsciously, for the most part, but sometimes with open ceremony - keeps alive those popular beliefs and prac tices which are individually called survivals. With some of these legacies from the past the present volume deals. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In Byways of Scottish History (Classic Reprint) by Louis A. Barbé Pdf

Excerpt from In Byways of Scottish History What has so far been said does not, it must be allowed, apply very directly to one of the papers contained in the present collection. It cannot be claimed for the Long tail myth, of which the stpry is here given, that it is essentially Scottish. It may, however, be urged in support of its right to appear here, that it was French at a time when, as regards antipathy against England. The agreement between France and Scotland was a very close one. And, if further justification be needed, it may be found in the fact that some of the Scottish chroniclers are amongst those who supply the most valuable informa tion concerning both the prevalence and the alleged origin of the quaint medieval belief that Englishmen had tails inflicted on them in punishment of the impiety of some of their pagan forefathers. In connection with this paper the author has the pleasant duty of expressing his thanks to Dr. George Neilson, to whom he is indebted for several illustra tive passages; and also to Mr. Barwick, of the British Museum, without whose ready help a number of others would have remained inaccessible. Highways and Byways in East Anglia (Classic Reprint) by William A. Dutt Pdf

Excerpt from Highways and Byways in East Anglia So I do not ask any one to believe all I shall tell of the castles and abbeys, towns and hamlets of East Anglia. If I have any aim or method in my narrations, it is to follow the lead of the monkish chroniclers and relate both fact and myth, generally leaving it to others to judge where the line should be drawn between them. Wherever I go I am an incurably sentimental traveller; I love to muse over a grey old priory as much on account of its incredible legends as for its actual and credible history. Walsingham Abbey loses nothing of its charm for me because Erasmus made caustic comment on the silly stories he heard from the monks there; the assurance of a learned bookworm that Dunwich in the height of its prose perity did not rival the London of its day, does not rob me of a moment's pleasure while I Stand on the cliffs from which the old city sank into the sea. As I am a seeker of the picturesque in scenery, so am 1 a searcher for the romantic in story and while I have eyes for the one and instinct for finding the other, no isolated hamlet can be utterly dull to me, or legend and. Country Blues Songbook by Stefan Grossman Pdf

The shellac of the 20's, 30's and 40's caught the fleeting moment, the spirit of the times; the raunchy ragtime, barrelhouse boogie and the country blues. Some of those records will never be replaced. Some, never will be heard again. Many of those songs are here in printed form for the first time, as an only monument to a pristine era never to happen again. This is a valued collection of the great country blues — as sung and played by the greatest of the country bluesmen — as collected and annotated by Stefan Grossman, Hal Grossman and Stephen Calt: Aberdeen Mississippi Blues/Booker White'Bout A Spoonful/Mance LipscombAlabama Blues/Robert WilkinsAin't You Sorry?/Mance LipscombAll Night Long/Skip JamesAt Home Blues/Sam "Lightnin' " HopkinsAvalon Blues/Mississippi John HurtAwful Fix Blues/Buddy Boy HawkinsBanty Rooster Blues/Charlie PattonBeer Drinkin' Women/R.K. History of Christianity by Paul Johnson Pdf

First published in 1976, Paul Johnson’s exceptional study of Christianity has been loved and widely hailed for its intensive research, writing, and magnitude—“a tour de force, one of the most ambitious surveys of the history of Christianity ever attempted and perhaps the most radical” (New York Review of Books). In a highly readable companion to books on faith and history, the scholar and author Johnson has illuminated the Christian world and its fascinating history in a way that no other has. Johnson takes off in the year AD 49 with his namesake the apostle Paul. Thus beginning an ambitious quest to paint the centuries since the founding of a little-known ‘Jesus Sect’, A History of Christianity explores to a great degree the evolution of the Western world. With an unbiased and overall optimistic tone, Johnson traces the fantastic scope of the consequent sects of Christianity and the people who followed them. Information drawn from extensive and varied sources from around the world makes this history as credible as it is reliable. Invaluable understanding of the framework of modern Christianity—and its trials and tribulations throughout history—has never before been contained in such a captivating work.

Occult America by Mitch Horowitz Pdf

From its earliest days, America served as an arena for the revolutions in alternative spirituality that eventually swept the globe. Esoteric philosophies and personas—from Freemasonry to Spiritualism, from Madame H. P. Blavatsky to Edgar Cayce—dramatically altered the nation’s culture, politics, and religion. Yet the mystical roots of our identity are often ignored or overlooked. Opening a new window on the past, Occult America presents a dramatic, pioneering study of the esoteric undercurrents of our history and their profound impact across modern life.
