Dog-Friendly Trails for All Seasons in California's Foothills and the Sierra Nevada by Debbi Preston Pdf

This book is a follow-up to 48 Dog-Friendly Trails in Californias Foothills and the Sierra Nevada, published by AuthorHouse in 2008. In keeping with the first books structure, there are four trailheads described for each month of the year to encourage year-round outdoor excursions. In some cases, there are multiple trail choices from a single trailhead so everyone can find an outing suitable to their groups individual needs. Trails are all dog friendly, with some providing off-leash opportunities. Many of the trails are also suitable for joggers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. A table at the back of the book identifies the usage for each trail. You will also find information as to which trails feature great views, swimming, family access, fishing, and other activities. Listening to readers feedback from the first book, with the new book the focus is in finding more obscure trails so even the most experienced enthusiast will find new places to explore. There are also maps for trails with difficult descriptions. Trails are still rated from 1 (easiest) to 5 (most difficult), but with this book you will find more trails with a 4 and 5 rating. Still there are easy options for each month, but overall there are more challenging opportunities.

Valuing Chaparral by Emma C. Underwood,Hugh D. Safford,Nicole A. Molinari,Jon E. Keeley Pdf

Chaparral shrubland ecosystems are an iconic feature of the California landscape, and a highly biodiverse yet highly flammable backdrop to some of the fastest growing urban areas in the United States. Chaparral-type ecosystems are a common element of all of the world’s Mediterranean-type climate regions – of which California is one – yet there is little public appreciation of the intrinsic value and the ecosystem services that these landscapes provide. Valuing Chaparral is a compendium of contributions from experts in chaparral ecology and management, with a focus on the human relationship with chaparral ecosystems. Chapters cover a wide variety of subjects, ranging from biodiversity to ecosystem services like water provision, erosion control, carbon sequestration and recreation; from the history of human interactions with chaparral to current education and conservation efforts; and from chaparral restoration and management to scenarios of the future under changing climate, land use, and human population. Valuing Chaparral will be of interest to resource managers, the research community, policy makers, and the public who live and work in the chaparral dominated landscapes of California and other Mediterranean-type climate regions.

The California ELD Standards Companion by Ivannia Soto,Linda Carstens,Jim Burke Pdf

California teachers: you’re going to love this! Here at last is that single teaching resource for making the critical link between our ELD Standards and the CCSS ELA Standards. Standard by standard, you’ll quickly discover how to integrate language development into your day-to-day content instruction, armed with an insider’s understanding of how best to support our many English learners. Modeled after Jim Burke’s Common Core series, this Grades 6-8 volume of The California ELD Standards Companion is every bit “that version of the standards you wish you had” because it’s just so easy to digest and apply. It’s all here: Horizontal and vertical views reveal how each ELD Standard changes and progresses grade by grade and proficiency level by proficiency level. What the Student Does Sections, also scannable by grade and proficiency level, unpack in student-friendly language what meeting a standard looks like in practice. CCSS ELA Standards are displayed side by side with California’s ELD Standards so you can appreciate the purposeful alignment between the two as the basis for remodeling instructional practice. What the Teacher Does Sections provide specific instructional guidance by grade band, including student prompts and tips for differentiation across proficiency level. A dedicated vocabulary section offers a quick-reference glossary of key words and phrases as they are used within each ELD Standard. Each section concludes with a vignette from the California ELA/ELD Framework to illustrate exemplary standards-based instruction. Thanks to the ELD Standards, we are now free to teach our ELs the way we knew best all along: language and content taught hand in hand across the school day. Lean on Ivannia Soto and Linda Carstens’ California ELD Standards Companion as your one-stop guide for delivering that excellent education our ELs so deeply deserve.
