Univer-Cities: Strategic Implications for Asia by Anthony SC Teo Pdf

Univer-cities: Strategic Implications for Asia aims to redefine the multi-faceted symbiotic relationship between universities and host cities. The four readings in this reader will invite readers to challenge the traditional view of what a university is as a place, and re-define the university as a space; drawing discoverers, creators, and seekers who are keen to preserve and enhance the value of higher education in Asia. This reader will also show how universities can make a huge and innovative impact on the immediate, surrounding, and global communities that are drawn into its ambit of its campus and sought out by the university in inter-univer-city and trans-displinary linkages. Written by worldly academic leaders and professionals from Berkeley, Cambridge, Canberra and Singapore — who are prominent in fields of higher education strategy, campus cum urban planning, design, and architecture — the readings will shed some light on the future and power of univer-cities. It also shares seven strategic implications the concept has on Asian universities — this is especially timely and apt for a part of the world where education, togetherness, hard work, high-savings rates, and economic growth are emerging tectonic changes that the trinity of China, India and the Southeast Asian region engenders. It is no wonder that several top Asian cities have universities that have been ranked among the Top 50 universities in the world. Contents:Setting the Conversation on Univer-Cities: Strategic Implications for Asia (Anthony SC Teo)Cambridge Futures: Enabling Consensus on Growth and Change (Peter Carolin)Berkeley: Campus and Community (Richard Bender, Emily Marthinsen, and John Parman)Conversations in Futures of Univer-Cities in the Asia Pacific: Singapore — Place and Education in the 21st Century (Harold Guida and Andrew Donnelly)Yunnan Gardens Master Plan (with Postscripts) (Anthony SC Teo)AppendixIndex Readership: Campus planners, architects, landscape and lighting consultants, city planners, mayors, futurists, educators. Keywords:Univer-Cities Futures;Redefining Strategy;University Mission And Place;Campus-City Planning;Design Metaphors;Strategic Stewardship;Ranking World Class Universities;Economically Powerful CitiesKey Features:This is an artistically-designed compact reader which explains the idea of univer-cities. Prominent authors from Cambridge, Berkeley, Canberra, and Singapore have contributed four evocative readings that have been written in a conversationally thought-provoking mannerThe challenges that universities face in this day and age are re-defined and they are not presented as pre-defined notionsThe book is a prelude to an envisaged Conference about Univer-cities that is slated to be held at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) on 18th November 2013. The reader will show how Singapore has the potential of becoming a compelling Univer-city and it emphasizes on NTU's current univer-city status as a ‘garden-Univer-city’ (of a quadro-plaited university in a garden within a greater garden city-state of Singapore)Reviews: "Univer-Cities will accelerate. University of British Columbia is an incorporated municipality porously contiguous with the garden City of Vancouver; and pioneered social embeddedness through private-public co-development which raised some $500 million for our endowment." Arthur Hara OC Past Chairman, Board of Governors University of British Columbia "Living in the town of Pasadena a stone's throw away from Caltech, I enjoy the synergies of a simple life in science amidst the city's community, while cultural diversity is provided by the nearly Los Angeles. Looking across the Pacific to Asia, its rapidly growing high-rise universities are an integral component of megacities. I envisage a wide field for the development of mutually inspired novel formats of academic institutions that nevertheless allow the young generation a life in the city. In recent times there has been instead, a regrettable moving of university campuses to areas far removed from city centers, a separation that vertical and high-rising universities can now make unnecessary." Professor Dr Rudolph A Marcus Arthur Amos Noyes Professor of Chemistry, California Institute of Technology and 1992 Nobel Laureate for Chemistry "Anyone who is involved in either industry or education will know that today, the relationship between the university and its host city is increasingly symbiotic and dynamic. Today, the university and the city collaborate and share to enable both to become greater than the sum of their parts. In Asia, I have no doubt that we have only seen the tip of the iceberg, and that the most exciting developments in ‘univer-cities’ are still ahead of us. This book helps to illuminate the key issues and is therefore an apt beginning to that journey." Dr Victor K Fung Founding Chairman, Fung Global Institute; Chairman, Fung Group, and Chairman of the Council of The University of Hong Kong, 2001–2009 "The strategic underpinnings of 'univer-cities' resonate well with UKM as the value of its intellectual assets is harnessed by many elements in society to fuel socio-economic growth through technological innovations and entrepreneurship." Tan Sri Dato' Wira Professor Dr Sharifah Hapsah Syed Hasan Shahabudin Vice Chancellor, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and President, National Council of Women's Organisation "I wholeheartedly agree with the concept of ‘univer-cities’. I believe in the future that the presence of worldclass universities will be the primary engines of superior economic growth, rather than the presence of low cost labour which typified high growth cities in the late 20th century." Nunzio Quacquarelli Managing Director QS Education Trust "Universities are no longer ivory towers of the past or sanctuaries of the church. Their interactions with the cities are evident in the nurturing of manpower for economic activities and providing innovations for better living." Professor Cham Tao Soon Chancellor of SIM University and Founder President of NTU (1991–2002) and 2006 recipient of The Royal Academy of Engineering International Medal (UK) "This edited volume highlights the role of universities in building knowledge-based cities and societies. In the next two decades, these universities will be characterised by the symbiotic relationship between the universities and their urban settings as they focus on issues critical to the environments in which they prosper." Dr Barry Desker Dean, S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Nanyang Technological University and Singapore Non-Resident Ambassador to Spain and The Vactican "An excellent piece of work with significance to our times and global higher education today. The intricate symbiosis and stories between universities in cities hosting them are cleverly captured by the contributors. It is encouraging, to say the least, that after reading the three stories told, one feels encouraged and enthused, knowing that the journey of institutional development has many common characters, features, challenges, opportunities and light-bulb moments. All great universities need their cities and vice versa." Winnie Eley Pro Vice-Chancellor (International and Advancement) University of Newcastle, Australia

Green infrastructure encompasses many features in the built environment. It is widely recognised as a valuable resource in our towns and cities and it is therefore crucial to understand, create, protect and manage this resource. This Handbook sets the context for green infrastructure as a means to make urban environments more resilient, sustainable, liveable and equitable. Great British Plans by Ian Wray Pdf

Can the British plan? Sometimes it seems unlikely. Across the world we see grand designs and visionary projects: new airport terminals, nuclear power stations, high-speed railways, and glittering buildings. It all seems an unattainable goal on Britain’s small and crowded island; and yet perhaps this is too pessimistic. For the British have always planned, and much of what they have today is the result of past plans, successfully implemented. Ranging widely, from London’s squares and the new city of Milton Keynes, to ‘High Speed One’, the motorways, and the secret first electronic computers, Ian Wray’s remarkable book puts successful infrastructure plans under the microscope. Who made these plans and what made them stick? How does this reflect the defining characteristics of British government? And what does that say about the individuals who drew them up and saw them through? In so doing the book casts refreshing new light on how big decisions have actually been made, revealing the hidden sources of drive and initiative in British society, as seen through the lens of ‘plans past’. And it asks some searching questions about the mechanisms we might need for successful ‘plans future’, in Britain and elsewhere. Includes foreword by the Right Honourable the Lord Heseltine CH.

Research Projects and Research Proposals by Paul G. Chapin Pdf

Paul Chapin's guide to writing proposals for scientific research can be used by scientists in any discipline who submit papers to funding agencies to gain support for their research projects. A longtime program officer at the National Science Foundation, Chapin treats the proposal as one part of a larger process of planning a research project, which makes it easier to write and more likely to be effective. The book differs from other guides by treating proposal writing in the larger context of project planning from an insider's perspective. Paul G. Chapin became the first director of the NSF Linguistics Program when it was established in October 1975. He continued as NSF's Program Director for Linguistics until 1999, with three interruptions: one year serving as Deputy Division Director for Behavioral and Neural Sciences, one year's detail as a staff associate to the head of the Office of Information Systems, and a year's sabbatical leave to study mathematics at George Washington University. From 1999 until his retirement in 2001, Chapin served as a senior program officer for cross-disciplinary activities at the NSF. On the occasion of his retirement, the NSF presented him with the Director's Superior Accomplishment Award, and the Linguistic Society of America awarded him the first annual Victoria A. Fromkin Award for Distinguished Service to the Profession.

Road Congestion Pricing in Europe by Harry Ward Richardson,Chang-Hee Christine Bae Pdf

. . . this book is an interesting collection of papers on the topic of road congestion pricing. . . The reader should find this collection to be both interesting and informative, but also quite thought-provoking. . . The papers also provide some very useful information about projects that have not worked or have not been implemented for various reasons and lessons that can be learnt from failures to implement and failures of pricing schemes. Peter R. Stopher, International Planning Studies In February 2003, the London Congestion Charging Scheme was introduced and in 2006 a similar policy was introduced in Stockholm. In both cases automobile traffic entering the cordon declined by about 20 percent. This book evaluates these and other similar programs exploring their implications for the United States. While there is increasing interest in road pricing in the US in many individual states, the motivation is often highway financing rather than congestion relief. The contributors argue that the prospects for extensive implementation in the US remain uncertain. Nevertheless, this book illustrates that the European experience suggests political feasibility is much less of a hurdle than was once considered and that congestion pricing would have a significant impact in reducing traffic as it did in Europe. This study s value lies in the fact that it examines road pricing in the real world and not simply from a theoretical viewpoint. As a comparative study it will appeal to both policymakers and academics in transportation economics and planning, urban economics, planning and economic geography.

Holford by Gordon E. Cherry,Leith Penny Pdf

Originally published in 1986 Holford is not just a biography of a major architect, planner and civic designer. In describing the life and times of the man, the authors provide a fascinating analysis of the developments in British architecture and planning from the 1930s to the 1970s. The book explains the story of a wartime policies for post-war reconstruction and examines policies which have had a major influence on the shaping of modern towns and cities. Holford’s involvement in planning in the post-war period shows how gradually the concept of ‘civic design’ has been discarded to the detriment of the urban landscape. His position in the thick of development conflicts, such as that of Piccadilly, have much to tell us about the workings of developers and planning authorities, and the failings of the planning system in the pressures for growth in the 1960s. In this key period of British architectural and planning history, Holford was a leading actor, and describing his role the book provides a very readable account of a little explored area.
