Ever since the association between cancer and thrombosis was reported by Jean-Baptiste Bouillaud in the early 19th century, cancer-associated thrombosis has remained a challenging domain of cancer management. Thrombosis can at times be a lead to cancer diagnosis, while it often complicates medical situations as a coexisting disorder. In this handbook, the contributors have compiled comprehensive information on the subject to provide the reader a comprehensive review of current medical literature and guidelines for cancer-associated thrombosis. Key Features -clinically oriented text for application in healthcare settings -current, evidence-based literature reviews and references -includes guidelines on VTE prophylaxis, heparin effects and more -includes information about special cases Thrombosis in Cancer: A Medical Professional's Guide to Cancer Associated Thrombosis is an informative handbook for a broad range of readers in medicine, including generalists, residents, and graduate-level trainees.

Thrombosis and Hemostasis in Cancer by Gerald Soff Pdf

In this book, leaders in the field explore our current understanding of thrombosis and hemostasis in cancer and address key questions on the subject. Among the topics discussed are the mechanisms that cancers use to activate the coagulation system, and those by means of which an activated coagulation system can lead to more aggressive cancer growth. Clinical chapters examine the role of thrombosis prophylaxis and treatment, central line-associated thrombosis, and cancer-associated hemorrhage. Subsequent chapters deal with the management of chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia, anticoagulation in the presence of brain metastases, and other unique challenges in the interaction of thrombosis and hemostasis in cancer. It has been 150 years since Armand Trousseau first described the well-known association between cancer and an increased risk of thrombosis, which may be considered the first paraneoplastic syndrome ever identified. More recently, numerous studies have indicated that activation of the coagulation system by cancer not only increases the likelihood of thrombosis, but is also associated with a more aggressive cancer phenotype. By familiarizing readers with the latest developments in this complex and challenging field, the book offers a valuable resource for scientists and clinicians alike.

Care Without Coverage by Institute of Medicine,Board on Health Care Services,Committee on the Consequences of Uninsurance Pdf

Many Americans believe that people who lack health insurance somehow get the care they really need. Care Without Coverage examines the real consequences for adults who lack health insurance. The study presents findings in the areas of prevention and screening, cancer, chronic illness, hospital-based care, and general health status. The committee looked at the consequences of being uninsured for people suffering from cancer, diabetes, HIV infection and AIDS, heart and kidney disease, mental illness, traumatic injuries, and heart attacks. It focused on the roughly 30 million-one in seven-working-age Americans without health insurance. This group does not include the population over 65 that is covered by Medicare or the nearly 10 million children who are uninsured in this country. The main findings of the report are that working-age Americans without health insurance are more likely to receive too little medical care and receive it too late; be sicker and die sooner; and receive poorer care when they are in the hospital, even for acute situations like a motor vehicle crash.

Cancer, Blood Clots and Bleeding by Floris Bosch Pdf

"People with cancer have a very high risk of venous thrombo-embolism (VTE), comprising deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, compared to people without cancer. Treatment of VTE in people with cancer is complicated since both the bleeding risk and recurrent VTE risk are higher than in people without cancer. In this thesis several studies on the treatment, prevention and etiology of cancer-associated VTE are presented. In part 1 (chapters 2 to 5) studies on the treatment of cancer-associated VTE are discussed. Chapter 2 presents a study in the drug-drug interaction between edoxaban and tamoxifen in women with breast cancer. Chapter 3 is a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials on direct oral anticoagulants (DOAC) versus low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) for the treatment of cancer-associated VTE. Chapter 4 discusses risk factors on gastro-intestinal bleeding in patients with VTE and gastro-intestinal cancer on edoxaban. In Chapter 5 the risk of cancer in patients with factor Xa inhibitors is studied in a Danish population cohort study. In part 2 (chapters 6 to 8) studies on the prevention of cancer-associated VTE are discussed. Chapter 6 is a narrative review on primary thromboprophylaxis in ambulatory cancer patients. Chapter 7 is a systematic review and meta-analysis on primary thromboprophylaxis in ambulatory cancer patients with a high risk of VTE. In Chapter 8 we discuss the predictive value of the biomarker GDF-15 for bleeding in patients with thromboprophylaxis in the AVERT trial. In part 3 (chapters 9 to 11) studies on aetiology and epidemiology of cancer-associated VTE are presented. In chapter 9 results of a study on intrinsic pathway activation in patients with pancreatic cancer are reported. Chapter 10 shows a study in tumor gene expression and VTE risk in patients with pancreatic cancer. Chapter 11 is a study on the prevalence of pulmonary embolism in cancer patients on whom autopsy is performed."--

Cancer Associated Thrombosis by Annie Young Pdf

This unique guide provides the core knowledge on epidemiology, prevention, diagnosis, therapy and overall management of patients with cancer-associated thrombosis, including case studies, and patient perspectives. The evidence base is highlighted throughout. This is a hugely valuable resource for the non-specialist on all aspects of thrombosis and malignancy and is ideal for general practitioners, junior doctors, specialist nurses and allied health professionals. Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a common occurrence in patients with malignant disease. Prevention of VTE is the ultimate goal. Acute VTE is treated with anticoagulant therapy to prevent recurrent thrombosis, including potentially fatal pulmonary embolism (PE). The risk of recurrent thrombosis and the risk of anticoagulant-induced bleeding are increased in cancer patients compared to non-cancer patient. Every cancer patient should be individually assessed for the risk of VTE or the risk of recurrence of VTE and the balance between thrombosis and bleeding, weighed up, for each person. The book addresses all these key issues. The patient experience is a focus throughout the book. The table of contents maps the 'real life' cancer-associated thrombosis patient pathway for some patients.
