Neuromuscular Disease by John H. J. Wokke,Pieter A. van Doorn,Jessica E. Hoogendijk,Marianne de Visser Pdf

There are over 600 neuromuscular disorders and the variability of these syndromes can leave clinicians feeling as if they are lost in a maze as they seek to diagnose and manage patients. This book addresses this problem by using the case-history and symptom manifestation as a starting point for the diagnostic process in adult patients, mimicking the situation in the consultation room. For each case, diagnostic tools, disease pathogenesis, prognosis and treatment options are discussed, along with rare manifestations and differential diagnoses. Symptoms, signs and syndromes are cross-linked to help the reader navigate the variety of disorders. Accompanying tables give a broader picture of the manifestations of a particular disease within the landscape of neuromuscular disorders. This highly-illustrated book, with accompanying videos, will aid neurologists at all levels, internists, geneticists, rehabilitation physicians and researchers in the field, as they seek to familiarize themselves with this complex range of disorders.

Case Studies in Neurological Pain by Claudia Sommer Pdf

"Among all patients with neurological disorders, pain is probably the most common symptom experienced. Identifying, understanding and treating pain is a responsibility of health care providers in all branches of neurology. This text is about pain in neurological diseases, both 'neuropathic' pain that is recognized in sensory neuron disorders but also other types of pain less commonly considered. These latter disorders include for example, pain in Parkinson's disease, ALS and muscle diseases. The text includes specific chapters on mechanisms of neuropathic pain, updated with new ideas on its pathogenesis, and a summary of recent therapeutic guidelines. Most of the text however centers on actual patient encounters at the Neurology clinics of the Universities of Wurzburg and Calgary. This emphasis is to make the vignettes relevant to clinical practitioners but also to introduce researchers and workers in industry to the complex and challenging issues faced during direct patient encounters. Therapeutic failures are common among our vignettes, highlighting the fact that current therapeutic advances remain inadequate-a challenge for researchers to find better approaches"--Provided by publisher.

Neuromuscular Disease by Michael Benatar Pdf

A Certain Kind of Wisdom In Plato’s Apology, the Greek philosopher Socrates is on trial to defend himself against the allegation of corrupting the youth of Athens. Socrates denies this charge and offers an alternate reason for why he is on trial. He explains, “[w]hat has caused my reputation is none other than a certain kind of wisdom. What kind of wisdom? Human wisdom, perhaps(1). ” He proceeds to tell the story of his friend Chaerophon, who once asked the Oracle at Delphi whether there was anyone wiser than Socrates. The Oracle answered that there was not. Socrates did not agree and thought that he would try to prove the Oracle wrong. And so he set about seeking out Athenians with a reputation for wisdom in various regards in order to test their claims to knowledge through questioning. He discovered many with false claims to knowledge and none with genuine wisdom and ultimately concluded that he was the wisest. He reached this conclusion not because of any special knowledge he possessed that others did not, but rather because he recognized his own lack of knowledge and strived to learn more, while others thought that they were kno- edgeable but were not. Socrates’ conclusion that there is wisdom in recognizing the limitations of accepted knowledge represents the motivation for this book.
