Cast Manual for Adults and Children by F. Freuler,U. Wiedmer,D. Bianchini Pdf

The publication of this Cast Manual is very timely. Technological advances made in the past two decades have resulted in increased popularization of open reduction and internal fixation in the treat ment of long bone fractures. Due primarily to incorrect application of those techniques, it has become increasingly apparent that its routine and casual use can result in complications - oftentimes of catastrophic nature. Students and practitioners of orthopedics must keep uppermost in their minds that osteogenesis takes place spontaneously through an orderly and physiological process. Surgical intervention and the intro duction of a foreign body at the fracture site alters that process. Though the fracture heals, it does so not because of the mechanical device but in spite of it. Therefore, internal fixation must be reserved only for those instances when its practical advantages heavily out weigh its biological disadvantages. The success of nonsurgical treatment of fractures is also predicated on the clear understanding of fracture healing and the proper application of stabilizing techniques. This cast manual emphasizes the importance of proper application of various casts and discusses very well those details which are important for the success of nonsurgical treatment of fractures. Dr. F. FREULER, Dr. U. WIEDMER, and D. BIANCHINI'S Cast Manual must be read carefully by students of orthopedics and used as a reference book for those who should keep abreast of new concepts and techniques of closed management of fractures. Small Fragment Set Manual by U. Heim,K.M. Pfeiffer Pdf

The rapid development in the surgical treatment of fractures during the past 9 years has necessitated considerable modifications to the first edition of this book. Numerous new implants and instruments are presented in this, the second edition. In 4.0-, 3.5- and 2.7-mm screws the hexagonal socket has definitively superseded the Phillips head, while mini-implants have been modified and a 1.5-mm screw introduced. A number of new plates and implants have been introduced and have long since proved their value. At the same time new techniques, described here, have been developed and applied. The tension-band wire is included, despite the fact that it does not consist of specific AO implants, and use of the Kirschner wire is also illustrated and emphasized whenever the authors consider that this simple method is still the best available. Alterations in the organization of the book have been necessary: the shoulder, the forearm and the knee are treated in separate chapters, and other sections have been extended. With regard to clinical-radiological examples, new typical situations are described and documented. The case studies from the first edition have been recontrolled in all instances in which it was feasible to do so. In this way many valuable late results, 9-12 years after internal fixation, were obtained. We found that almost all joints had remained stable after healing of an articular fracture; so-called late arthrosis is rare in the peripheral skeleton.

Fractures of the Acetabulum by E. Letournel,R. Judet Pdf

It has been a pleasure to comply with requests to publish this book in English. During the intervening years, there has been little to add to our views as to the best management of acetabular fractures, but an additional chapter has been incorporated comprising recent findings in our patients and slight changes in emphasis on the indications for operations. Additionally, having recognised that one of the greatest difficulties in this method of treatment lies in the pre-operative assessment of the standard radiographs, we have prepared a short series of radiographs which the reader may find advantageous for study. We are grateful to Mr. Reginald Eison who has translated and revised the French edition. Considerable alteration of the text and the general presen tation was necessary in order to make the material palatable in English. Our thanks are due to our new publishers, Springer-Verlag, for their keen interest and skill. E. LETOURNEL R. JUDET Preface to the French Edition It is a long time since we first attempted surgical treatment of fractures of the acetabulum accompanied by displacement, with the aim of restoring perfect articulation. Such treatment demands an exact reconstitution of the anatomy of the acetabulum and pelvic bone. This volume comprises an account of our efforts to assess the place of open reduction and internal fixation of displaced fractures of the acetabulum. The principal aim is simple: the perfect restoration of the articular surface and the associated bony architecture.

Congenital Dysplasia and Dislocation of the Hip in Children and Adults by Dietrich Tönnis Pdf

For more than 100 years, congenital dislocation of the hip has been an area of concern in orthopedics. This publications on the subject are al most too numerous to count. Yet our knowledge of the basic principles of congenital hip dislocation and its management is constantly being expanded by new research. In Germanspeaking countries, Kaiser pub lished the last comprehensive textbook on congenital hip dislocation in 1958, and Schlegel followed with a comprehensive handbook in 1961. In the Angloamerican world, Coleman's monograph was pub lished in 1978, Somerville's in 1982, and Wilkinson's in 1985. In 1982 Tachdjian compiled a volume on congenital hip dislocation that con tained contributions from 44 authorities. The purpose of the present book is to provide an overview of our pre sent state of knowledge of congenital hip dislocation, covering basic principles, diagnosis, methods of closed and open treatment, and indi cations. In the process, an attempt is made to trace progress in the field from its beginnings to the present time. Many authors describe the diagnosis and treatment of congenital hip dysplasia and dislocation in terms of specific age groups. We believe it is more prudent to take an individualized approach based on arthro graphic findings and the degree of severity of pathologic changes. Less emphasis is placed here on the management of patients by age group.
