Catalogue of the Medici Archives, Consisting of Rare Autograph Letters, Records and Documents, 1084-1770 by House Of Archives Medici Pdf

Excerpt from Catalogue of the Medici Archives, Consisting of Rare Autograph Letters, Records and Documents, 1084-1770: Including One Hundred and Sixty-Six Holograph Letters of Lorenzo the Magnificent It will be noticed that almost all of Lorenzo's letters now before us are addressed to Pietro Alamanni, Florentine ambassador at Milan, and afterwards at Rome and Naples. The other papers composing the section whose presence here we have to explain are letters received by Lorenzo and sent on by him to Alamanni for reference, copies of Lorenzo's instructions to other ambassadors or of their despatches to him, the Florentine government's instructions to Alamanni, Alamanni's letter-books, and a few letters from Lorenzo to the Pope and other persons, which are probably duplicates. Lorenzo frequently wrote two copies of letters, and sent them by different routes for greater security. When both copies reached the ambassador he delivered one and kept the other. These papers were plainly the part of Alamanni's embassy-archives dating from the years May 1489 - April 1492. A modern diplomatist would not be allowed to take such documents home with him when he retired, but usage in these matters was different four centuries ago, and ambassadors treated official correspondence that remained in their hands as their own private property. Many instances might be mentioned, but perhaps the celebrated collection at Besancon, in which hundreds of signed letters from the Emperor Charles V. Have found a place because the ambassadors, members and connexions of the Granville family, to whom they were addressed, did not return them to the Imperial chancery, may suffice to Show that the practice was general. The Rise and Fall of the House of Medici by Christopher Hibbert Pdf

At its height Renaissance Florence was a centre of enormous wealth, power and influence. A republican city-state funded by trade and banking, its often bloody political scene was dominated by rich mercantile families, the most famous of which were the Medici. This enthralling book charts the family’s huge influence on the political, economic and cultural history of Florence. Beginning in the early 1430s with the rise of the dynasty under the near-legendary Cosimo de Medici, it moves through their golden era as patrons of some of the most remarkable artists and architects of the Renaissance, to the era of the Medici Popes and Grand Dukes, Florence’s slide into decay and bankruptcy, and the end, in 1737, of the Medici line.

I Medici E Il Levante : Culture E Dialoghi Tra Firenze E Il Mediterraneo Orientale (1532-1743) by Maurizio Arfaioli,Marta Caroscio Pdf

This volume addresses the major themes that marked the complex relations between the Medici Grand Dukes and the Levant. For over two centuries (1532-1737), the Medici, as Dukes of Florence and Grand Dukes of Tuscany, ruled over a western Mediterranean state, which had a mainly European geopolitical sphere of influence. However, the transformation of the House of Medici, from republican "primi interpares" of Quattrocento Florence to dynastic rulers, occurred at the same moment when the Ottoman Empire rose to the rank of early modern superpower, polarizing Mediterranean politics. The Italian Peninsula became the arena where the cultural forces of the eastern and western Mediterranean converged. As a result, from the early days of their rule, the Medici Grand Dukes became enmeshed in a power dynamic which encompassed war, religion, diplomacy, and economic interests. This collection of essays addresses these very themes and sheds new light on key aspects of the complex relationships between the Medici Grand Dukes and the Levant.

The Pucci of Florence by Carla D'Arista Pdf

Shrewd and ruthless, the Pucci were Medici loyalists whose political and cultural alignment with the most powerful family in Renaissance Florence was rewarded with wealth and influence. The Pucci family's martial support for the Medici in the ugly business of ruling Tuscany drove their transformation from a clan of minor guildsmen to a noble dynasty with three cardinals to its name. Over the next centuries, they showcased their exalted status with art and architecture that mirrored Medici tastes and reflected the values of civic humanism. The political and religious turmoil of the High Renaissance is writ large in this vivid portrait of the Pucci cardinals and their artistic patronage, a cultural biography inflected by the expulsion of the Medici from Florence, the Sack of Rome, the Reformation, and the occupation of Italy by Emperor Charles V. New archival evidence documents the chapels, palaces, and villas that were built, expanded, and decorated by the Pucci family in Rome, Tuscany, and Umbria. These celebrated projects were carried out by luminaries of Renaissance art and architecture: Michelozzo, the Pollaiuolo brothers, the Sangallo family, Baccio d'Agnolo, the Montelupo workshop, and others. A remarkable body of inventories reveals how the family's trials and tribulations shaped the fate of their estates and illustrates the role luxury goods played in the social ambitions of this newly-arrived family. Finally, a previously unknown catalogue of Palazzo Pucci tells the tale of the nineteenth-century dispersal of the family's priceless Renaissance artworks, a collection that once paralleled the splendor of the Medici court.

Bibliotheca Osleriana by Sir William Osler,Osler Library Pdf

During his tenure as the Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford from 1905-1919, Sir William Osler amassed a considerable library on the history of medicine and science. A Canadian native, Osler had studied at McGill University and decided to leave his collection of 7,600 items to its Faculty of Medicine. A catalogue, the Bibliotheca Osleriana, was compiled - a labour of love that took ten years to complete and involved W.W. Francis, R.H. Hill, and Archibald Malloch. Osler himself laid down the broad outlines of the catalogue and wrote many of the annotations.
