Catherina by Monte C. Fast Pdf

This book leads one through a great odessy of faith and the immigration of a persecuted people, who without a land, followed the teaching of Father Menno Simon, founder of the Dutch Anabaptist movement. Their history is filled with persecution, hardships, and blessings upon their work. The historic episodes prior to the immigration to Canada are largely fictional. Many of those stories are presented to allow the reader to understand the serious trials that Mennonites endured. Catheriina's children, my uncles and aunts told me of things like the stories in the first part of the book. They probably did not happen to one family, but they truly did happen to many of the early Anabaptists. For the sake of focus, they are grouped togather around the Fast family. Catherina, the title charactter of the book, her husband and all of her children are carefully drawn figures built on oral histories, memoirs, family records, and research in archives, cemetaries, and visiting places that were a part of the author's childhood. It hs been a inspiration to live through the lives of these generations.

Catherina and the Incredible Stripy Pants by Samantha Pearce Pdf

Living on a farm house in a small village in Ireland, Catherina grows up hearing Daddy-Joe's stories of far far-away; places that are filled with excitement and adventure. Daddy-Joe promises Catherina that one day, when she is older, he will take her to see all the far-away lands of his stories. But when Daddy-Joe remarries and inherits lots of step-sons and step-daughters, he doesn't have as much time to spend with Catherina as he did before. And he commits the ultimate sin - he shares the tales of his far-away lands with all his children, and so they are no longer stories shared solely between him and Catherina. Feeling lonely and betrayed, Catherina decides its time she left her home and family for the big wide world. And where better to visit than the lands of Daddy-Joe's stories! So with the help of her friend the Leprechaun and a magical pair of pink and purple stripy pants, Catherina sets off to see the world. A story set to captivate the hearts and minds of small children, Catherina and the Incredible Stripy Pants is filled with rhyming language, colourful imagery and loveable characters. Addressing the contemporary themes of extending families and second marriages, this book playfully reminds children of the importance of families, and the love they give.

Signposts by Sally E. Hadden,Patricia Hagler Minter Pdf

In Signposts, Sally E. Hadden and Patricia Hagler Minter have assembled seventeen essays, by both established and rising scholars, that showcase new directions in southern legal history across a wide range of topics, time periods, and locales. The essays will inspire today's scholars to dig even more deeply into the southern legal heritage, in much the same way that David Bodenhamer and James Ely's seminal 1984 work, Ambivalent Legacy, inspired an earlier generation to take up the study of southern legal history. Contributors to Signposts explore a wide range of subjects related to southern constitutional and legal thought, including real and personal property, civil rights, higher education, gender, secession, reapportionment, prohibition, lynching, legal institutions such as the grand jury, and conflicts between bench and bar. A number of the essayists are concerned with transatlantic connections to southern law and with marginalized groups such as women and native peoples. Taken together, the essays in Signposts show us that understanding how law changes over time is essential to understanding the history of the South. Contributors: Alfred L. Brophy, Lisa Lindquist Dorr, Laura F. Edwards, James W. Ely Jr., Tim Alan Garrison, Sally E. Hadden, Roman J. Hoyos, Thomas N. Ingersoll, Jessica K. Lowe, Patricia Hagler Minter, Cynthia Nicoletti, Susan Richbourg Parker, Christopher W. Schmidt, Jennifer M. Spear, Christopher R. Waldrep, Peter Wallenstein, Charles L. Zelden.

Embracing Our Roots by Paul J. Palma Pdf

America has provided a platform for countless migrant peoples who have, in turn, contributed to the nation’s landscape as a multicultural land of opportunity. Still, the waves of assimilation can obscure the distinctive customs and beliefs of immigrants, many feeling coerced to conform to American attitudes towards race, the economy, and politics. Others, inundated with American media, consumerism, and secularity, have forgotten those aspects about their family heritage that make them unique. Drawing from Palma’s background as an Italian American evangelical, Embracing Our Roots considers the significance of rediscovering our ancestral history in a society where many are forced to repress, ignore, or reject their heritage. A nation of immigrants, every American is, in some sense, an “ethnic” American and stands to gain from considering how the people and places they come from make them unique. In addition to using genealogy databases and social networks, Palma maintains the rich value of thumbing through the family archives, hearty conversations with loved ones, and building one’s family tree. This book is for scholars and laypersons alike with interest in the themes of biblical living, faith-based traditions, food culture, immigration, social class, race, family dynamics, and mental health.
