Differentiation and Growth of Cells in Vertebrate Tissues by G. Goldspink Pdf

In recent years a new field of study has arisen called developmental biology. The term developmental biology is really a new name for embryology; it is, however, used to denote the molecular approach to the study of developing systems. In this book we have tried wherever possible to blend the older information of classical embryology and in particular organogeny with the newer concepts of developmental biology. The original intention was to cover all the tissues of the body in this book. However, it soon became obvious that it was not possible to do this within one volume. Therefore we decided to have two general chapters, one on the basic concepts of cellular development and an other on the ageing of cells (this being considered part of the normal growth process). In addition to these two general chapters we have included chapters on some of the major tissues. These were chosen not just to illustrate the points made in the general chapters but because there is enough information available on the development of these tissues for the expert in that field to present a good, readable account. It is hoped that at a later date when more information is available, we will be able to extend this work, probably as several volumes, and to include the other tissues of the body which are not dealt with in this volume.

Calcium and Phosphorus in Health and Disease by John J.B. Anderson,Sanford C. Garner Pdf

Calcium and Phosphorus in Health and Disease is a valuable source of information on the role of nutrition in maintaining bone health throughout the life cycle. It emphasizes nutritional interactions with mineral metabolism and maintenance of bone health. This book presents the basic concepts of regulation of calcium and phosphorus metabolism by calcemic hormones and the structure and function of calcified tissues. It provides an in-depth review of bone growth and maintenance and calcium metabolism throughout the life cycle. Pregnancy and lactation, the effects of physical activity, and the special problems of nutrition and bone health in the elderly are addressed. It presents the basic biochemistry of mineral homeostasis and bone development and presents reviews by experts on the treatment and epidemiology of osteoporosis. This text/reference is extensively illustrated, with numerous original drawings created especially for this work. Calcium and Phosphorus in Health and Disease will benefit both students in medical and basic sciences who are beginning their studies in this area and researchers and clinicians who are not expert in this field but need a source of basic information on the subject. The book's current discussions and up-to-date references will quickly move the beginning student to a higher level of understanding.

Tissue Engineering of Cartilage and Bone by Gregory R. Bock,Jamie A. Goode Pdf

Tissue engineering takes advantages of the combined use of cultured living cells and three-dimensional scaffolds to reconstruct adult tissues that are absent or malfunctioning. This book brings together scientists and clinicians working on a variety of approaches for regenerating of damaged or lost cartilage and bone to assess the progress of this dynamic field. In its early days, tissue engineering was driven by material scientists who designed novel bio-resorbable scaffolds on which to seed cells and grow tissues. This ground-breaking work generated high expectations, but there have been significant stumbling blocks holding back the widespread use of these techniques in the clinic. These challenges, and potential ways of overcoming them, are given thorough coverage in the discussions that follow each chapter. The key questions addressed in this book include the following. How good must cartilage repair be for it to be worthwhile? What is the best source of cells for tissue engineering of both bone and cartilage? Which are the most effective cell scaffolds? What are the best preclinical models for these technologies? And when it comes to clinical trials, what sort of outcome measures should be used? With contributions from some of the leading experts in this field, this timely publication will prove essential reading for anyone with an interest in the field of tissue engineering.

Tissue Engineering by John P. Fisher,Antonios G. Mikos,Joseph D. Bronzino Pdf

Increasingly viewed as the future of medicine, the field of tissue engineering is still in its infancy. As evidenced in both the scientific and popular press, there exists considerable excitement surrounding the strategy of regenerative medicine. To achieve its highest potential, a series of technological advances must be made. Putting the numerous breakthroughs made in this field into a broad context, Tissue Engineering disseminates current thinking on the development of engineered tissues. Divided into three sections, the book covers the fundamentals of tissue engineering, enabling technologies, and tissue engineering applications. It examines the properties of stem cells, primary cells, growth factors, and extracellular matrix as well as their impact on the development of tissue engineered devices. Contributions focus on those strategies typically incorporated into tissue engineered devices or utilized in their development, including scaffolds, nanocomposites, bioreactors, drug delivery systems, and gene therapy techniques. Finally, the book presents synthetic tissues and organs that are currently under development for regenerative medicine applications. The ability to engineer biocompatible tissue is the hallmark of modern biomedical engineering, integrating all aspects of every sub-discipline in the field. Featuring chapters drawn from the third edition of the best-selling Handbook of Biomedical Engineering as well as new contributions not found in the handbook, Tissue Engineering surveys the latest advances in this relatively young area. The contributing authors are a diverse group with backgrounds in academia, clinical medicine, and industry. Furthermore, the text includes contributions from Europe, Asia, and North America, helping to broaden the views on the development and application of tissue engineered devices.
