Persephone Rises, 1860–1927 by Margot K. Louis Pdf

Over the course of the nineteenth century, the figure of Persephone rapidly evolved from what was essentially a decorative metaphor into a living goddess who embodied the most spiritual aspects of ancient Greek religion. In the first comprehensive survey of the Persephone myth in English and American literature of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Margot Louis explores the transformation of the goddess to provide not only a basis for understanding how the study of ancient history informed the creation of a new spirituality but for comprehending the deep and bitter tensions surrounding gender that interacted with this process. Beginning with an overview of the most influential ancient texts on Persephone and references to Persephone in Chaucer, Shakespeare, Milton, and Romantic period writing, Louis shows that the earliest theories of matriarchy and patriarchal marriage emerged in the 1860s alongside the first English poems to explore Persephone's story. As scholars began to focus on the chthonic Mystery cults, and particularly on the Eleusinian Mysteries of Demeter and Persephone, poets and novelists explored the divisions between mother and daughter occasioned by patriarchal marriage. Issues of fertility and ritual resonate in Thomas Hardy's Tess of the d'Urbervilles and Willa Cather's My Antonia, while the first advance of a neo-pagan spirituality, as well as early feminist critiques of male mythography and of the Persephone myth, emerge in Modernist poems and fictions from 1908 to 1927. Informed by the latest research and theoretical work on myth, Margot Louis's fascinating study shows the development of Victorian mythography in a new light; offers original takes on Victorian representations of gender and values; exposes how differently male and female Modernists dealt with issues of myth, ritual, and ancient spirituality; and uncovers how deeply the study of ancient spirituality is entwined with controversies about gender.

The Pomegranate Seeds by Sebastian Hayes Pdf

This imaginative play is closely based on the Greek myth of Persephone's abduction and descent into the Underworld. Ceres, the Goddess of the Harvest, has a daughter, Persephone, who is kidnapped by Dis, God of the Underworld. Can Zeus, the lord of the gods, persuade Dis to let Persephone return to Earth? The compromise achieved by having Persephone divide her time between the two worlds serves as an allegory of the seasons.

Demeter's Search for Persephone - Mythology 4th Grade | Children's Greek & Roman Books by Baby Professor Pdf

The story of Demeter and Persephone was all about a mom’s undying love for her daughter. This story also creates a “reason” for the change of seasons. Of course, in the ancient times, such a reason was acceptable due to the lack of scientific truths. Myths are powerful stories created out of the need to explain certain phenomena. Have a happy read!

The Human Odyssey: A Hidden History by Krsanna Duran Pdf

Departure from the Garden represents the maiden flight of humanity from its earliest beginning with ancestors from the stars. The ancestor races evolved from the same universal code from which the oldest human species grew, many of whom have now left human evolution behind them to climb to even greater states within the universal code. The most ancient emblem on Earth observed in modern UFO contact guides the search for Native America's ancestors, those who returned to Mexico in 1991 in the most extensive UFO activity in modern history. Traces of Native America's ancestors, the ancient astronauts, have often been dismissed as too impossibly ancient to believe. And it is the factor of what can be perceived as reality or truth that is followed in this search for humanity through the manifestation of mind and the shamanic perspective in North America's oldest pyramids. Recent scientific discovery of super continents and new excavations at Gobekli Tepe in Turkey are examined in light of traditional lore from the remote corners of the Earth. The search for The People Of Life, those who opened the tree of life to repopulate Native America, leads through Earth's oldest cultures -- Egypt, Greece, India, Tibet and Mu, the motherland.
