Changing Sex and Bending Gender by Alison Shaw,Shirley Ardener Pdf

Anthropologists and historians have shown us that 'male' and 'female' are variously defined historically and cross-culturally. The contributions to this volume focus on the voluntary and involuntary, temporary or permanent transformation of gender identity. Overall, this volume provides powerful and compelling illustrations of how, across a wide range of cultures, processes of gender transformation are shaped within, and ultimately constrained by, social and political context. From medical responses to biological ambiguity, legal responses to cases brought by transsexuals, the historical role of the eunuch in Byzantium, the social transformation of gender in Northern Albania and in the Southern Philippines, to North American 'drag' shows, English pantomime and Japanese kabuki theatre, this volume offers revealing insights into the ambiguities and limitations of gender transformation.

Changing Sex by Bernice L. Hausman Pdf

Changing Sex takes a bold new approach to the study of transsexualism in the twentieth century. By addressing the significance of medical technology to the phenomenon of transsexualism, Bernice L. Hausman transforms current conceptions of transsexuality as a disorder of gender identity by showing how developments in medical knowledge and technology make possible the emergence of new subjectivities. Hausman's inquiry into the development of endocrinology and plastic surgery shows how advances in medical knowledge were central to the establishment of the material and discursive conditions necessary to produce the demand for sex change--that is, to both "make" and "think" the transsexual. She also retraces the hidden history of the concept of gender, demonstrating that the semantic distinction between "natural" sex and "social" gender has its roots in the development of medical treatment practices for intersexuality--the condition of having physical characteristics of both sexes-- in the 1950s. Her research reveals the medical institution's desire to make heterosexual subjects out of intersexuals and indicates how gender operates semiotically to maintain heterosexuality as the norm of the human body. In critically examining medical discourses, popularizations of medical theories, and transsexual autobiographies, Hausman details the elaboration of "gender narratives" that not only support the emergence of transsexualism, but also regulate the lives of all contemporary Western subjects. Changing Sex will change the ways we think about the relation between sex and gender, the body and sexual identity, and medical technology and the idea of the human.

On The Science of Changing Sex by Kay Brown Pdf

Ten years in the making, well researched, pulling together peer reviewed science and personal experiences, On The Science of Changing Sex explains the deeper, less known, aspects of transsexuality and transgenderism. Sure to spark controversy, it delves deeply into the hidden world and secrets, often suppressed, the public doesn't hear about. This book is NOT the typical "born in the wrong body" transgender story. Reading it, you will discover that there is more than one kind of "transgender". You will learn the deep connection between transkids and gender atypical gays and lesbians and the shameful history of efforts to "cure" them. You will also learn about the way that cross-dressing men develop into autogynephilic transwomen. Kay also explores about the new fad of teens and young people falsely claiming "trans" and "non-binary" identities to join the "cool kids club" that gave rise to the myth of Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria (ROGD). Kay Brown, herself a transsexual who was diagnosed as a teenager in the 1970s, while in high school, has spent a lifetime working to better the lives of transsexuals including co-founding the ACLU Transsexual Rights committee in 1980 among other notable achievements.

Transforming Gender, Sex, and Place by Lynda Johnston Pdf

Transgender, gender variant and intersex people are in every sector of all societies, yet little is known about their relationship to place. Using a trans, feminist and queer geographical framework, this book invites readers to consider the complex relationship between transgender people, spaces and places. This book addresses questions such as, how is place and space transformed by gender variant bodies, and vice versa? Where do some gender variant people feel in and / or out of place? What happens to space when binary gender is unravelled and subverted? Exploring the diverse politics of gender variant embodied experiences through interviews and community action, this book demonstrates that gendered bodies are constructed through different social, cultural and economic networks. Firsthand stories and international examples reveal how transgender people employ practices and strategies to both create and contest different places, such as: bodies; homes; bathrooms; activist spaces; workplaces; urban night spaces; nations and transnational borders. Arguing that bodies, gender, sex and space are inextricably linked, this book brings together contemporary scholarly debates, original empirical material and popular culture to consider bodies and spaces that revolve around, and resist, binary gender. It will be a valuable resource in Geography, Gender and Sexuality studies.

Gender Bending Investigations Part 1 by Farleven Pdf

This was the last assignment I expected... As an agency analyst I'd spent the last several years investigating the rise of Patrick Oswald from small timer to one of the richest and most powerful men on Earth. There was something rotten at the core of his success, and we'd already lost several agents trying to find it. What we needed was to get someone inside, deep inside, all the way to his inner sanctum, where his personal data could be accessed. That's where my assignment came in. They needed someone who knew all of his deals, and everything else about him, and after five years, I was the person. The only problem was, to get in that deep, they needed a woman, and since I wasn't one, they were going to make me a woman. A little nanotechnology went a long way, and I was soon on my way to being just the kind of brunette that Oswald swooned after. There was just one more thing I needed to do before starting my new mission. One night of wild passion to prove that I'd have what it takes to succeed. The whole feminine side of the equation was new to me, but with the right man, I soon learned just how much I could enjoy this assignment. Gender Swapped Fairy Tales by Karrie Fransman,Jonathan Plackett Pdf

Discover a collection of fairy tales unlike the ones you've read before . . . Once upon a time, in the middle of winter, a King sat at a window and sewed. As he sewed and gazed out onto the landscape, he pricked his finger with the needle, and three drops of blood fell onto the snow outside. People have been telling fairy tales to their children for hundreds of years. And for almost as long, people have been rewriting those fairy tales - to help their children imagine a world where they are the heroes. Karrie and Jon were reading their child these stories when they hit upon a dilemma, something previous versions of these stories were missing, and so they decided to make one vital change.. They haven't rewritten the stories in this book. They haven't reimagined endings, or reinvented characters. What they have done is switch all the genders. It might not sound like that much of a change, but you'll be dazzled by the world this swap creates - and amazed by the new characters you're about to discover.

Sex Change by Mistress Dede Pdf

"Sex change" is a very broad term that refers to the process of a person or animal changing sex. This occurs naturally in some species of animals, but more often the term is used to mean sex reassignment surgery. The term can refer to either male sexual characteristics being substituted for female ones, or vice versa. The male to female substitution is much more common because it is by far the simpler of the two. Intersexual individuals may undergo some form of sex change, most often as children, to take on a clearly defined gender identity. In adults, the process is usually taken by transsexual individuals. Transsexuality occurs when a person's brain identifies with one gender (either male or female) but his or her body's anatomy displays the sexual characteristics of the opposite role. This is called Gender Identity Disorder and undergoing the sex change process is one way to correct this condition. This is a very large and complex topic that has been broken down into five subtopics for this e-book. In the following e-book we will survey the various procedures, not all of them medical, that can come under the heading of "sex change;" take a more in depth look at the sex change operation; cover the differences in making the transition from male to female versus female to male; and look at the topic of forced sex changes that still go on in some countries. While this is still a very controversial subject, it is becoming more and more accepted that Gender Identity Disorder is a medical birth condition that leads to confusion, depression, and frustration in individuals who are born with it. Using therapy or medical procedures to bring the body and brain back into agreement with each other often allows these individuals to lead fuller, happier lives. It is our hope that at the end of this short e-book you have a fuller understanding of this topic, and a broader knowledge base on which to build your own opinions.

Men as Women, Women as Men by Sabine Lang Pdf

As contemporary Native and non-Native Americans explore various forms of "gender bending" and gay and lesbian identities, interest has grown in "berdaches," the womanly men and manly women who existed in many Native American tribal cultures. Yet attempts to find current role models in these historical figures sometimes distort and oversimplify the historical realities. This book provides an objective, comprehensive study of Native American women-men and men-women across many tribal cultures and an extended time span. Sabine Lang explores such topics as their religious and secular roles; the relation of the roles of women-men and men-women to the roles of women and men in their respective societies; the ways in which gender-role change was carried out, legitimized, and explained in Native American cultures; the widely differing attitudes toward women-men and men-women in tribal cultures; and the role of these figures in Native mythology. Lang's findings challenge the apparent gender equality of the "berdache" institution, as well as the supposed universality of concepts such as homosexuality.

Young Men in Uncertain Times by Vered Amit,Noel Dyck Pdf

Anthropology is particularly well suited to explore the contemporary predicament in the coming of age of young men. Its grounded and comparative empiricism provides the opportunity to move beyond statistics, moral panics, or gender stereotypes in order to explore specific aspects of life course transitions, as well as the similar or divergent barriers or opportunities that young men in different parts of the world face. Yet, effective contextualization and comparison cannot be achieved by looking at male youths in isolation. This volume undertakes to contextualize male youths' circumstances and to learn about their lives, perspectives, and actions, and in turn illuminates the larger structures and processes that mediate the experiences entailed in becoming young men. The situation of male youths provides an important vantage point from which to consider broader social transformations and continuities. By paying careful attention to these contexts, we achieve a better understanding of the current influences encountered and acted upon by young people.

Identity and Networks by Deborah Fahy Bryceson,Judith Okely,Jonathan Webber Pdf

Contrary to the negative assessments of the social order that have become prevalent in the media since 9/11, this wide-ranging collection of essays, mostly by social anthropologists, focuses instead on the enormous social creativity being invested as collective identities are reconfigured. Using fieldwork findings drawn from Africa, Asia, and Europe, special emphasis is placed on the reformulation of ethnic and gender relationships and identities in the cultural, social, political, and religious realms of public life. Under what circumstances does trust arise, paving the way for friendship, collegiality, knowledge creation, national unity, or emergence of leadership? How is social life constructed as a collective endeavour? Does the means towards sociability become its end? And what can be said about the agency and collegiality of women? The inspiration for examining these conundrums is the work and persona of Shirley Ardener, to whom the volume is dedicated.
