Chapters in Modern Botany by Patrick Geddes Pdf

Excerpt from Chapters in Modern Botany This little book makes no attempt to condense a survey of its science; even within the fields through which it passes it seeks only to be suggestive, not exhaustive; its chapters have actually grown out of the syllabus and notes of University Extension Lectures, with their necessary limitations. In matter and form its appeal is to the general reader; yet, in method and spirit, to the student also, - in some measure even to the teacher. In botany, as in other studies, educational methods alter with the times. In the Linnean period the "best botanist was he who knew the most plants," however little of each; while a later and still dominant school has founded upon Cuvier a type-system which makes him know much, - but of few. Hence the student has come no longer to load his vasculum and memory in a single vacation, with all things from the cedar to the hyssop; but, seeing that cedar and hyssop have been selected as types by the highest authority, scrutinises these, and these only, for his term. Analysis is great, and the anatomist is its prophet; yet such Elementary Biology is but Necrology, its so-called "life-histories" being but histories of form. It is the misfortune of biology that Darwin was not a teacher. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Natural Things in Early Modern Worlds by Mackenzie Cooley,Anna Toledano,Duygu Yıldırım Pdf

The essays and original visualizations collected in Natural Things in Early Modern Worlds explore the relationships among natural things - ranging from pollen in a gust of wind to a carnivorous pitcher plant to a shell-like skinned armadillo - and the humans enthralled with them. Episodes from 1500 to the early 1900s reveal connected histories across early modern worlds as natural things traveled across the Indian Ocean, the Ottoman Empire, Pacific islands, Southeast Asia, the Spanish Empire, and Western Europe. In distant worlds that were constantly changing with expanding networks of trade, colonial aspirations, and the rise of empiricism, natural things obtained new meanings and became alienated from their origins. Tracing the processes of their displacement, each chapter starts with a piece of original artwork that relies on digital collage to pull image sources out of place and to represent meanings that natural things lost and remade. Accessible and elegant, Natural Things is the first study of its kind to combine original visualizations with the history of science. Museum-goers, scholars, scientists, and students will find new histories of nature and collecting within. Its playful visuality will capture the imagination of non-academic and academic readers alike while reminding us of the alienating capacity of the modern life sciences.

Indigenous Food Systems by Priscilla Settee,Shailesh Shukla Pdf

Indigenous Food Systems addresses the disproportionate levels of food-related health disparities among First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people in Canada, seeking solutions to food insecurity and promoting well-being for current and future generations of Indigenous people. Through research and case studies, Indigenous and non-Indigenous food scholars and community practitioners explore salient features, practices, and contemporary challenges of Indigenous food systems across Canada. Highlighting Indigenous communities’ voices, the contributing authors document collaborative initiatives between Indigenous communities, organizations, and non-Indigenous allies to counteract the colonial and ecologically destructive monopolization of food systems. This timely and engaging collection celebrates strategies to revitalize Indigenous food systems, such as achieving cultural resurgence and food sovereignty; sharing and mobilizing diverse knowledges and voices; and reviewing and reformulating existing policies, research, and programs to improve the health, well-being, and food security of Indigenous and Canadian populations. Indigenous Food Systems is a critical resource for students in Indigenous studies, public health, anthropology, and the social sciences as well as a vital reader for policymakers, researchers, and community practitioners.
