Character Theory for the Odd Order Theorem by Thomas Peterfalvi Pdf

The famous and important theorem of W. Feit and J. G. Thompson states that every group of odd order is solvable, and the proof of this has roughly two parts. The first part appeared in Bender and Glauberman's Local Analysis for the Odd Order Theorem which was number 188 in this series. This book provides the character-theoretic second part and thus completes the proof. All researchers in group theory should have a copy of this book in their library.

Character Theory of Finite Groups by Mark L. Lewis Pdf

This volume contains a collection of papers from the Conference on Character Theory of Finite Groups, held at the Universitat de Valencia, Spain, on June 3-5, 2009, in honor of I. Martin Isaacs. The topics include permutation groups, character theory, p-groups, and group rings. The research articles feature new results on large normal abelian subgroups of p-groups, construction of certain wreath products, computing idempotents in group algebras of finite groups, and using dual pairs to study representations of cross characteristic in classical groups. The expository articles present results on vertex subgroups, measuring theorems in permutation groups, the development of super character theory, and open problems in character theory.

Local Analysis for the Odd Order Theorem by Helmut Bender Pdf

In 1963 Walter Feit and John G. Thompson proved the Odd Order Theorem, which states that every finite group of odd order is solvable. The influence of both the theorem and its proof on the further development of finite group theory can hardly be overestimated. The proof consists of a set of preliminary results followed by three parts: local analysis, characters, and generators and relations (Chapters IV, V, and VI of the paper).

The Concise Handbook of Algebra by Alexander V. Mikhalev,G.F. Pilz Pdf

It is by no means clear what comprises the "heart" or "core" of algebra, the part of algebra which every algebraist should know. Hence we feel that a book on "our heart" might be useful. We have tried to catch this heart in a collection of about 150 short sections, written by leading algebraists in these areas. These sections are organized in 9 chapters A, B, . . . , I. Of course, the selection is partly based on personal preferences, and we ask you for your understanding if some selections do not meet your taste (for unknown reasons, we only had problems in the chapter "Groups" to get enough articles in time). We hope that this book sets up a standard of what all algebraists are supposed to know in "their" chapters; interested people from other areas should be able to get a quick idea about the area. So the target group consists of anyone interested in algebra, from graduate students to established researchers, including those who want to obtain a quick overview or a better understanding of our selected topics. The prerequisites are something like the contents of standard textbooks on higher algebra. This book should also enable the reader to read the "big" Handbook (Hazewinkel 1999-) and other handbooks. In case of multiple authors, the authors are listed alphabetically; so their order has nothing to do with the amounts of their contributions.

The Collected Papers of William Burnside: Commentary on Burnside's life and work ; Papers 1883-1899 by William Burnside Pdf

William Burnside was one of the three most important algebraists who were involved in the transformation of group theory from its nineteenth-century origins to a deep twentieth-century subject. Building on work of earlier mathematicians, they were able to develop sophisticated tools for solving difficult problems. All of Burnside's papers are reproduced here, organized chronologically and with a detailed bibliography. Walter Feit has contributed a foreword, and a collection of introductory essays are included to provide a commentary on Burnside's work and set it in perspective along with a modern biography that draws on archive material.

Approximately fifty articles that were published in The Mathematical Intelligencer during its first eighteen years. The selection demonstrates the wide variety of attractive articles that have appeared over the years, ranging from general interest articles of a historical nature to lucid expositions of important current discoveries. Each article is introduced by the editors. "...The Mathematical Intelligencer publishes stylish, well-illustrated articles, rich in ideas and usually short on proofs. ...Many, but not all articles fall within the reach of the advanced undergraduate mathematics major. ... This book makes a nice addition to any undergraduate mathematics collection that does not already sport back issues of The Mathematical Intelligencer." D.V. Feldman, University of New Hamphire, CHOICE Reviews, June 2001.

A concise treatment of topics from group theory and representation theory for use in a one-term course. Focussing on the non-commutative side of the field, this advanced textbook emphasizes the general linear group as the most important group and example. Readers are expected to be familiar with groups, rings, and fields, and to have a solid knowledge of linear algebra. Close to 200 exercises of varying difficulty serve both to reinforce the main concept of the text and to introduce the reader to additional topics.

Characters of Solvable Groups by I. Martin Isaacs Pdf

This book, which can be considered as a sequel of the author's famous book Character Theory of Finite Groups, concerns the character theory of finite solvable groups and other groups that have an abundance of normal subgroups. It is subdivided into three parts: -theory, character correspondences, and M-groups. The -theory section contains an exposition of D. Gajendragadkar's -special characters, and it includes various extensions, generalizations, and applications of his work. The character correspondences section proves the McKay character counting conjecture and the Alperin weight conjecture for solvable groups, and it constructs a canonical McKay bijection for odd-order groups. In addition to a review of some basic material on M-groups, the third section contains an exposition of the use of symplectic modules for studying M-groups. In particular, an accessible presentation of E. C. Dade's deep results on monomial characters of odd prime-power degree is included. Very little of this material has previously appeared in book form, and much of it is based on the author's research. By reading a clean and accessible presentation written by the leading expert in the field, researchers and graduate students will be inspired to learn and work in this area that has fascinated the author for decades.

Pioneers of Representation Theory by Charles W. Curtis Pdf

The year 1897 was marked by two important mathematical events: the publication of the first paper on representations of finite groups by Ferdinand Georg Frobenius (1849-1917) and the appearance of the first treatise in English on the theory of finite groups by William Burnside (1852-1927). Burnside soon developed his own approach to representations of finite groups. In the next few years, working independently, Frobenius and Burnside explored the new subject and its applications to finite group theory. They were soon joined in this enterprise by Issai Schur (1875-1941) and some years later, by Richard Brauer (1901-1977). These mathematicians' pioneering research is the subject of this book. It presents an account of the early history of representation theory through an analysis of the published work of the principals and others with whom the principals' work was interwoven. Also included are biographical sketches and enough mathematics to enable readers to follow the development of the subject. An introductory chapter contains some of the results involving characters of finite abelian groups by Lagrange, Gauss, and Dirichlet, which were part of the mathematical tradition from which Frobenius drew his inspiration. This book presents the early history of an active branch of mathematics. It includes enough detail to enable readers to learn the mathematics along with the history. The volume would be a suitable text for a course on representations of finite groups, particularly one emphasizing an historical point of view. Co-published with the London Mathematical Society. Finite Group Theory by I. Martin Isaacs Pdf

The text begins with a review of group actions and Sylow theory. It includes semidirect products, the Schur–Zassenhaus theorem, the theory of commutators, coprime actions on groups, transfer theory, Frobenius groups, primitive and multiply transitive permutation groups, the simplicity of the PSL groups, the generalized Fitting subgroup and also Thompson's J-subgroup and his normal $p$-complement theorem. Topics that seldom (or never) appear in books are also covered. These include subnormality theory, a group-theoretic proof of Burnside's theorem about groups with order divisible by just two primes, the Wielandt automorphism tower theorem, Yoshida's transfer theorem, the “principal ideal theorem” of transfer theory and many smaller results that are not very well known. Proofs often contain original ideas, and they are given in complete detail. In many cases they are simpler than can be found elsewhere. The book is largely based on the author's lectures, and consequently, the style is friendly and somewhat informal. Finally, the book includes a large collection of problems at disparate levels of difficulty. These should enable students to practice group theory and not just read about it. Martin Isaacs is professor of mathematics at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Over the years, he has received many teaching awards and is well known for his inspiring teaching and lecturing. He received the University of Wisconsin Distinguished Teaching Award in 1985, the Benjamin Smith Reynolds Teaching Award in 1989, and the Wisconsin Section MAA Teaching Award in 1993, to name only a few. He was also honored by being the selected MAA Pólya Lecturer in 2003–2005.
