The Magic Show by Emil Mihelich Pdf

The saga of Dan Kristich continues. First encountered in "Around the Horn" in 1949 as a five-year-old boy and then in "The Purple Bow" in 1962 as a seventeen-year-old high school senior nearing graduation, Dan now finds himself, in the early spring of 1973, "stuck in Spokane, Washington." He has returned to "his West" after working for a year in the East as part of the housing administration at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, fifty miles east of New York City on Long Island. After experiencing the "decadence" that seemed to envelop Stony Brook, Dan returns to the Great Northwest, in this case to "The Heart" of its "Inland Empire," only to find, in Spokane, a Western expression of "The Valley of Ashes." In 1962, as American astronauts had begun to explore outer space, Dan wondered about the existence of the "next world" that was supposed to house "the souls of the faithful departed." And now, in the early spring of 1973, those same explorers, following in the footsteps of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, have made several voyages to the moon, never having found any solid evidence to support the existence of such a world. In the absence of any solid, definitive evidence, Dan reasons, life itself may be meaningless after all. Standing on the brink of despair, Dan phones his friend, Charlie, and the two of them embark on a night journey through Spokane's pouring rain. Ride along with them as Dan continues his search for, and finally this time to find, the magic that has the potential to restore hope and vitality to any "Valley of Ashes."

Chasing Ruth by Elizabeth A. Pierce,Holly J. Pierce,Katherine P. Chinelli,Ruth Crapo Johnson Pdf

What happens to a family of four when it travels over 18,000 miles in five weeks? In this nonfiction account the authors family follows in the century-old footsteps of writer Holly J. Pierces grandmother Ruth Crapo taken during her six-month Grand Tour of Europe and beyond. While the Grand Tour was designed to educate and refine a 27-year-old young lady, this contemporary journey initially planned to be both one of connection with the past and a chance to strengthen family bonds turns into a hectic, often grimly humorous forced march. Based on the words of Grandmother Ruths diary, the trek taken a century later comes to life through the candid words hastily scratched into the author and her daughters diaries as the family scrambled to make connections with trains, ferries, metros and planes. How the whine of circular saws, pushy Italian futbol players and French onion soup serve to both tear apart and heal wounds and grievances among these four travelers make it a trip not to be missed.

Chasing Shadows by David Brin,Stephen W. Potts Pdf

A science fiction and tech-vision anthology about the coming era of transparency in the Information Age David Brin, Hugo award-winning author of The Uplift War, presents Chasing Shadows, a collection of short stories and essays by other science fiction luminaries. As we debate Internet privacy, revenge porn, the NSA, and Edward Snowden, cameras get smaller, faster, and more numerous. Has Orwell's Big Brother finally come to pass? Or have we become a global society of thousands of Little Brothers—watching, judging, and reporting on one another? Partnering with the Arthur C. Clarke Center for Human Imagination, and inspired by Brin's nonfiction book The Transparent Society, noted author and futurist David Brin and scholar Stephen Potts have compiled essays and short stories from writers such as Robert J. Sawyer, James Morrow, William Gibson, Damon Knight, Jack McDevitt, and many others to examine the benefits and pitfalls of technologic transparency in all its permutations. Cajun Mardi Gras: A History of Chasing Chickens and Making Gumbo by Dixie Poché Pdf

Dive into Cajun Mardis Gras, where the party goes down with a wholly different flourish Everyone knows about Louisiana Mardi Gras and its glitz, glam, parades and masquerades. But in Cajun County, the festival turns communities into stage shows of wild revelry. Called Courir de Mardi Gras in the rural parishes, you'll find masked runners and horsemen bedecked in colorful, tattered clothing, cavorting through the countryside on a begging quest for gumbo ingredients. It's an outrageous celebration--derived from the French medieval Festival of Begging--on the eve of Lenten season's fasting. In exchange for neighborly generosity, the revelers sing, dance, act a fool, chase chickens and unite the community with an abundance of mirth that reverberates year-round. Join author Dixie Poche and take part in the wild spectacle and otherworldly whimsy of Courir de Mardis Gras.

Chasing the Saints by Donna Pucciani Pdf

Donna Pucciani's third book of poetry explores the relationship of the human to the divine through the lives of the saints. Pucciani's poems are not "your mama's" lives of the saints but rather meditations on the varieties of holiness espoused by these fascinating people. The poems are both spiritual and human, comic and serious. They challenge literate, discerning readers of any and all religions or none at all to think about things transcendent and to realize that sanctity comes only to those who are not afraid to be fully human.

RuPaul’s Drag Race and the Shifting Visibility of Drag Culture by Niall Brennan,David Gudelunas Pdf

This book identifies and analyzes the ways in which RuPaul’s Drag Race has reshaped the visibility of drag culture in the US and internationally, as well as how the program has changed understandings of reality TV. This edited volume illustrates how drag has become a significant aspect of LGBTQ experience and identity globally through RuPaul’s Drag Race, and how the show has reformed a media landscape in which competition and reality itself are understood as given. Taking on lenses addressing race, ethnicity, geographical origin, cultural identity, physicality and body image, and participation in drag culture across the globe, this volume offers critical, non-traditional, and first-hand perspectives on drag culture.
