Children, Torture and Power by Nathalie Man Pdf

Children, Torture and Power is a call to the international community to place the torture of children onto the international human right agenda, and to start combatting this deep-rooted problem. The report shows how children in countries all over the world are being subjected to torture and ill-treatment at the hands of their own governments and armed opposition groups. Drawing on documentary evidence from the UN and inter-governmental bodies, as well as a wide range of NGO's this report indentifies the following factors which increase children's vulnerability to torture and ill-treatment: conflict with the law; poverty; discrimination (for example, ethnicity, religion, gender, social, origin, birth); family associations; political activism; and involvement in armed conflict. The report also considers: the international definition of torture and problems in its application to children the effects of torture on children mechanisms which exist to protect children from torture.

The Torture of Children During Armed Conflicts by Sonja C. Grover Pdf

This book examines selected legal complexities of the notion of torture and the issue of the proper foundation for legally characterizing certain acts as torture, especially when children are the targeted victims of torture. ICC case law is used to highlight the International Criminal Court’s reluctance in practice to prosecute as a separable offence the crime of torture as set out in one or more of the relevant provisions of the Rome Statute where children are the particularized targets as part of a common plan during armed conflict. Also addressed is the failure of the ICC to consider that the young age of the victims of torture (i.e. children) should be an aggravating factor taken into account in determining the ICC sentence for those convicted of the torture of civilians, including children, in the context of armed conflict as part of a common plan. The six UN-designated grave crimes against children (including child soldiering for State or non-State forces perpetrating mass atrocities, and sexual violence perpetrated on a systematic and widespread basis against children including child soldiers), it is argued, are also instances of the torture of children as part of a common plan such that separate charges of torture are legally supportable (along with the other charges relating to additional Rome Statute offences involved in such circumstances). Useful legal perspectives on the issue of the torture of children in its various manifestations gleaned from the case law of other international judicial forums such as the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and the ICTY are also examined.

Childhood Abused by Geraldine Van Bueren Pdf

First published in 1998, this book seeks to consider the application of international human rights standards to situations where children are at risk of torture and other forms of ill-treatment. Each of the contributors authoritatively examines torture, cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment and punishment from the perspective of their own discipline and experience. In exploring the issues, Childhood Abused, also helps to raise their profile, as invisibility, ignorance and secrecy contribute to the continuation of such practices. The subject is harrowing and complex, Childhood Abused, needs to be read so that we are better able to prevent and protect children against such abhorrent and prohibited forms of ill-treatment.

Refugees Worldwide by Doreen Elliott,Uma A. Segal Pdf

Utilizing international perspectives, this unprecedented collection of essays from leading authorities on refugee studies spotlights the realities and challenges of the global refugee population. With increasing changes in the socio-political climate of the world as well as with the rising numbers of natural disasters, people of all ethnicities and nationalities are frequently forced from their homes and their homelands. While there is a substantial body of work that addresses refugee policies, post-traumatic stress disorder, and other specific issues, there have been few attempts to understand refugee health or comprehend overall refugee adaptation—until now. This is the first work to address refugee issues worldwide, addressing the psychological, health, human rights, political, public policy, law, economic, social, and personal aspects of this universal problem. Refugees Worldwide also includes examples of first-person refugee stories from around the world—eye-opening information not available in any other work. Drawing on the expertise of myriad international researchers, theoreticians, and practitioners from representative nations around the world, this four-volume set effectively speaks to a number of refugee issues from a truly global perspective.

Children of Refugees by Aida Alayarian Pdf

There is a wide gap between the psychological needs of the children of refugees and the services provided. Refugees' home countries, cultures, and social make-up are widely diversified, and their needs cannot be readily consolidated. This diversity of interest and need goes unacknowledged by the service-providers who may treat them as a single, homogenous group. Some refugees' needs are exaggerated, while others are ignored. This approach often ignores the justifiable and legitimate interest of refugees' psychological wellbeing. Many children of refugees may struggle with questions of race, ethnicity, language barriers, and other socio-political and economic issues that can influence their mental health and psychological wellbeing. Preoccupations of the child's emotions with those issues therefore have effects on child personality formations. Apart from having an overview of the relevant processes involved in therapeutic work and possible challenges therein, it is also important for the therapist to have an overview of the child's situation in the past and any current issues, which this book provides.

Torture by Shampa Biswas,Zahi Zalloua Pdf

The counterterrorism policies following September 11, 2001, brought the definition and legitimacy of torture to the forefront of political, military, and public debates. This timely volume explores the question of torture through multiple lenses by situating it within systems of belief, social networks of power, and ideological worldviews. Individual essays examine the boundaries of what is deemed legitimate political violence for the sake of state security, the immediate and long-term effects of torture on human and social bodies, the visual and artistic representations of torture, how certain people are dehumanized to make it acceptable to torture them, and how we understand complicity in and the ethical boundaries of torture.

Women Unsilenced by Jeanne Sarson,Linda MacDonald Pdf

Women Unsilenced explores the impact of unthinkable violence committed against women and girls through multiple perspectives—women’s recall of life-threatening ordeals of torture, human trafficking, and organized crime, society’s failure to recognize and address such crimes, and close examinations of how justice, health, political, and social systems perpetuate revictimizing trauma. Written by retired public health nurses who include their own experiences helped give voice and understanding to women who have been silenced. This book discloses their “underground” caring work and offers “kitchen table” research and insights, using women’s storytelling on multiple platforms to educate readers on the unimaginable layers of perpetrators’ modus operandi of violence, manipulation, and deceit. At times raw, painful, and shocking, this book is an important resource for those who have survived such crimes; professionals who support those victimized by torturers and traffickers; police, legal professionals, criminologists, human rights activists, and educators alike. It reveals how healing and claiming one’s relationship with/to/for Self is possible.

In at least 60 states, corporal punishment remains an authorised part of the school system. Research on corporal punishment has found it to be counter-productive and relatively ineffective, as well as harmful to physical, psychological and social well-being. This publication clarifies the human rights aspects of this matter - it includes the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child - and provides the main steps to be considered in the process of eliminating corporal punishment. It details practical steps for more constructive and effective child discipline practices.
