Chin Up, Head Down by Helena Tym Pdf

On 2nd June 2009, two men knocked on our door, bringing with them the news that our nineteen-year-old son, Cyrus, had been killed that morning by an IED while serving with 2 Rifles in Afghanistan. Our family as we knew it was destroyed in an instant. I had three sons, a job as a manager in a day centre for people with acquired brain injuries – and suddenly this had changed for ever. People ask me how I've coped, and my answer is that I have written it all down – partly for fear of losing those memories too, and also to try to make some sense of what has happened. This process of madness continues to be part of what has become my new ‘normal'. I have a new life now, which I’m trying desperately to come to terms with – and follow Cyrus’s words from his last letter to us.

Athletic Vision Skills by Dan Selin Pdf

An exceptional player will possess top-notch read-and-react skills when on the ice, anticipating where the puck is going because of their well-developed vision skills. This allows maximum peripheral vision to instantly help decide the next physical movement. Throughout his book “Athletic Vision Skills”, Dan Selin explains the science behind well-developed vision skills as the NEW sports skill. Simply put, a player’s expanded field of vision offers more options for the brain to create instant automatic body movements. All good players possess well-developed skating, stickhandling, passing, and shooting skills, but a player’s vision skill-level, once mastered, will change the way they play the game. Well-developed vision skills lessen body injuries and concussions, creating better-skilled and more-valuable players on the ice. Terminology including head-up/chin-up, read-and-react, what’s in your brain is how you play, five head positions, the 140-factor, etc., help explain how a player can effectively play without looking down and tracking the puck, contributing to safer play. Dan’s book presents practical solutions, testimonials from players and sports writers, first-person stories, statistics, newspaper articles, medical professionals’ opinions, and facts. Empirical data collected through studies is used to support the basis of this new frontier for the training of tomorrow’s highly-skilled hockey players.

Advanced Concepts in Defensive Tactics by Chuck Joyner Pdf

Today’s society is becoming increasingly more likely to resist the lawful actions of law enforcement officers. It is critical for officers to have the necessary defensive tactics (DT) skills to successfully overcome resistance in an efficient, safe, and legal manner. The answer to achieving these results is NOT in teaching thousands of possible responses to an infinite number of potential attacks. The answer is to first use a Risk Management approach and identify the most common and dangerous attacks on officers. Next, a successful DT program must stress core concepts, proper body mechanics, natural instinctive movement, and proven principles of survival. Advanced Concepts in Defensive Tactics: A Survival Guide for Law Enforcement presents the instruction of Master Police Instructor Chuck Joyner. Developed during his tenure as a FBI use of force instructor, and expanded by his lifelong dedication to the martial arts, Joyner’s Survival Sciences DT program relies on adhering to advanced concepts rather than memorizing countless techniques. Based on extensive research and actual street experience, this manual: Focuses on defensive tactics that are easily taught, understood, and applied by officers regardless of their size, strength, or athletic ability Covers hand-to-hand tactics, groundwork, weapon retention/weapon disarming, handcuffing, and the survival mindset Explains the necessary integration of hands-on DT techniques with common law enforcement secondary weapons (e.g., baton, pepper spray, TASER) Introduces a new use of force model (Dynamic Resistance-Response Model) which correctly depicts the dynamic encounter between an officer and a resistor by first focusing on the level of resistance by the subject Offers practical solutions reducing officer, department, and municipality liability Provides password access to the author’s supplemental training videos online Chuck Joyner, a recognized expert in the use of force, lectures throughout the United States and internationally on myriad law enforcement topics. Mr. Joyner holds several FBI instructor certifications in force-related training, has earned black belts in four martial arts, and was awarded master rank in two styles. He was inducted into the Martial Arts Hall of Fame as instructor of the year in 2006. Mr. Joyner was employed by the CIA from 1983 to 1987, and has worked as a Special Agent with the FBI since 1987. Chuck was interviewed on February 29, 2012 on American Heroes Radio.

Pediatric Neuro-Ophthalmology by Michael C. Brodsky Pdf

"Due to the generous representation of the afferent visual system within the brain, neurological disease may disrupt vision as a presenting symptom or as a secondary effect of the disease. Conversely, early developmental disturbances of vision often disrupt ocular motor control systems, giving rise to complex disorders such as nystagmus, strabismus, and torticollis. The signs and symptoms of neurological disease are elusive by their very nature, presenting a confounding diagnostic challenge. Neurological medications and neurosurgical treatments can produce neuro-ophthalmological dysfunction that can be difficult to distinguish from disease progression. Affected patients may experience substantial delays in diagnosis, and are often subjected to extensive (and expensive) diagnostic testing. Scientific articles pertaining to specific disorders are scattered throughout medical subspecialty journals. These children continue to "fall through the cracks" of our medical education system. The increasing recognition that pediatric neuro-ophthalmology comprises a distinct set of diseases from those seen in adults has led to its emergence as a dedicated field of study. "Since the original publication of Pediatric Neuro-Ophthalmology nearly fourteen years ago, interest in the field has burgeoned. Pediatric ophthalmology and pediatric neurology subspecialty conferences often include symposia dedicated to recent advances in pediatric neuro-ophthalmology. Technical advances in neuroimaging have given rise to a more integrated mechanistic classification of neuro-ophthalmological disease in children. Our understanding of neurodevelopmental disorders of the visual system has expanded, longstanding monoliths have been dissembled into component parts, basic molecular mechanisms have taken center stage, and genetic underpinnings have become definitional. Evolutionary alterations can now be observed at the level of the gene, adding a new dimension to our understanding of disease pathogenesis. New classifications now encompass clinically disparate conditions. Descriptive definitions have been supplanted by mechanistic ones, and clinical definitions superseded by genetic ones. Our concept of disease pathogenesis has been revised and in some cases overturned. Bearing witness to these remarkable advancements has compelled me to enhance and expand the first edition of Pediatric Neuro-Ophthalmology into this new and revised one. "In the first edition of this book, our goal was to present the clinical characteristics, diagnostic evaluation, and therapeutic options for the common neuro-ophthalmologic disorders of childhood. In so doing, we designed the book to be provide a narrative journey through the thought processes involved in the clinical management of these disorders. In this edition, I have retained the basic narrative format of original book, while expanding the exploration of these complex visual disorders in the context of the many new scientific advancements and discoveries that have come to light. These conditions are fun to diagnose, fascinating to understand, and gratifying to manage." --from the Preface to the 2nd Edition.
