The delightful South American "unrodent-like rodent" known as the chinchilla makes a playful and affectionate companion animal. Author Donna Anastasi refers to them as "inquisitive, sensitive, intelligent, and active," the ideal combination of intelligence and interaction anyone would want in a small pet. This Complete Care Made Easy title is an ideal introductory pet guide about the chinchilla, with detailed chapters on characteristics, selection of a healthy chinchilla, housing and care, welcoming and taming the new arrival, feeding and daily care, training, and health and veterinary care. The book offers excellent advice about feeding and nutrition, including the choice of pellets, supplements, hay, and treats. The chapter "Understanding and Training Your Chinchilla" explains the abilities and limitations of chinchillas' senses (they're nearsighted but have exceptional hearing) and offers a great overview of how they communicate through sounds and body language. With positive reinforcement and a clicker (no leash and collar!), the chin can be trained to perform tricks for the family's entertainment, and the book gives lots of training pointers for owners! For chin fanciers who are interested in further exploration, the author includes chapters on breeding chinchillas and getting involved in chin shows. About the Authors Chinchilla Facts Many animal babies are born with all their fur, or complete with feathers, but the chinchilla kit is one of the few animals that is born with its eyes wide open. Even puppies are born with their eyes closed! Chinchillas cannot get their fur wet, so instead of bathing in water, chinchillas use volcanic ash to clean their fur. This ash is found in the mountains where chinchillas live in the wild. When chinchillas are kept as pets, the chinchillas owner must purchase ash for the chinchilla to bathe in several times a week. Chinchillas have very special little hands that can grab and hold items in much the same way that a human grabs and holds items. Chinchillas are highly unique because they are one of the few species in the wild that are monogamous. This means that they choose a partner, and keep that same partner for life. While all chinchillas are small in size, especially compared to more common mammals like dogs and cats, the chinchilla’s body size is interesting because unlike most other mammal groups, the chinchilla females are usually a bit larger than the males. This is seen more often in spiders, and even birds, but very rarely in mammals. Most wild chinchillas are grey or brown in color, while domestic (pet) chinchillas are the more colorful, with white, beige, and violet being common. Wild chinchillas in the Andes mountains rarely actually drink water because they eat a lot of fruits and succulent plants. Succulent plants are plants in the cactus family that hold a lot of water in them. The water inside the fruits and plants that the chinchilla eats gives them most of the water they need to live.

The Complete Chinchilla Owners Guide :Facts about what makes Chinchillas great pets including facts about chinchilla care, chinchillas as pets by Matthew Debanks Pdf

Facts about what makes chinchillas great pets including facts about chinchilla care in general. The Chinchilla originates from the Andes Mountain Range in South America and the name derives from the South American Chincha tribe. The Chinchilla was first introduced to the western world in the 1500s. Chinchillas are very popular due to the thickness of their fur which is actually the thickest of any land mammal. Chinchillas that are handled by humans from a young age will be fairly tame and should usually form a close relationship with their own. There are cases though were the Chinchilla will not enjoy being held. Chinchillas are a nocturnal creature meaning that they are active at night and sleep during the day. Your chinchillas should be kept somewhere quiet during the day so that they are able to rest. Because the Chinchilla is an energetic and active pet it requires plenty of room to run around in.
