Christ and War (Classic Reprint) by William Ernest Wilson Pdf

Excerpt from Christ and War The author, in common with all who desire peace between the nations, owes a debt of gratitude to Norman Angell. For, whether one agrees or disagrees with his arguments in The Great Illusion, it is undeniable that he has brought the question of peace and war prominently and freshly before the public in this and other countries. 80 that peace advocates no longer speak to deaf ears. Hitherto they have found the public unwilling to listen to them, and inclined to view their theories as a mild form of insanity. The Great Illusion has changed this attitude by showing that between civilised states war can bring no gain to the victor, and, under certain circumstances, may damage him even more than the vanquished. At once per petual peace has become an ideal which the practical man can recognise as capable of realisation. The Christian and humanitarian peace advocacy claimed that war is wrong and should therefore be abolished. At this the practical man shook his head and said, War is certainly horrible; it is bad; but it is necessary. It is part of the nature of things; you can't abolish it. Now, if Norman Angell is right in his main contentions, it is no longer possible to say that war cannot be abolished. For it is clearly to the advantage of all men to abolish it; all that stands in the way is human ignorance and prejudice and in every department of life these are constantly being overcome. The Sword of Christ and the World War (Classic Reprint) by Perry James Stackhouse Pdf

Excerpt from The Sword of Christ and the World War The World War has forced many new, pressing, and perplexing problems upon the preacher. To him has been intrusted the gospel of reconciliation, of peace and good will to men, and how to preach that gospel in a world of war when nation is divided against nation and a man's foes are found even in his own national household, is by no means easy for him to determine. He may be successful in evading or ignoring the problems of the higher criticism and the doctrine of evolution; but war, with its terrible, insistent, and heart-searching questions, is a brutal, stubborn fact that must be met and answered. Let it be granted that the preacher has fallen upon difficult days. New questions which go to the very core of religion and ethics are hurled at him. A hundred new demands are being made upon his time, and when he is asked to give up his service for the advertising of liberty loans or for a discussion of the problems of food conservation, he is sometimes in doubt as to whether the calls of country are the calls of God. Papers for War Time by William Temple Pdf

Excerpt from Papers for War Time: Christianity and War Great britain is engaged in a war from which, as we believe, there was offered to our nation no honourable way of escape. The desire of all who love their country is to serve it in the hour of its need, and so to live and labour that those who have fallen in its service may not have died in vain. While this may suffice to make immediate duty clear, the war remains in the deepest sense a challenge to Christian thought. The present bitter struggle between nations which for centuries have borne the Christian name indicates some deep-seated failure to understand the principles of Christ and to apply them to human affairs. This series of papers embodies an attempt to reach, by common thought, discussion and prayer, a truer understanding of the meaning of Christianity and of the mission of the Church to the individual, to society and to the world. Christianity and the War (Classic Reprint) by Anonim Pdf

Excerpt from Christianity and the War We give our own experience on the subject under consideration in the belief that it reflects the experience of a large number in the Christian community, and this with-5 out much regard to sectarian relations. We suddenly find ourselves without any matured principles to guide us in the most trying crisis in the history of the nation and we can recall instances in which, with more or less of explicitness, we have committed ourselves to a policy which a severe test assures us to be wholly inadequate. Hence the change of conviction and, to a much greater extent, of feeling which has come over us. We are free to confess that We have been in the habit of over-estimating the civilization of the age and the country in which we live. Years ago we learned from Gibbon what might be expected of barbarians. But we indulged the hope that the Goths and Vandals belonged only to the early time. We did not expect that an Alaric could come from the land that had given birth to a Washington. The humilia-a ting fact of slavery, of property in man, was indeed before us; and a class of teachers insisted with tolerably severe logic, that a man who would appropriate to his own use the unpaid toil of another, could scruple at nothing. But we had personal acquaintances among slave-holders, and knew that such. An inference, however conclusive as a matter of logic, was not just in point of fact. We could give the names of slave-holders who, aside from what is involved in the fact of being slave-holders, would neither lie, nor steal, nor do an inhuman act. What Did Jesus Really Teach about War? (Classic Reprint) by Edward Leigh Pell Pdf

Excerpt from What Did Jesus Really Teach About War? Undoubtedly the war has gotten on America's sensibilities, but it is not on her conscience. Only here and there does one meet a man who is doing his bit with a sense Of exaltation, as one who has heard in that awful cry for help the voice of his own kin; as one who has had a vision of Christ's tender compassion for the op pressed or of Christ's blasting indignation against the oppressor. The War and the Christian Commission (Classic Reprint) by Andrew B. Cross Pdf

Excerpt from The War and the Christian Commission To what extent our papers were guilty of exasperating them by gross representations and violent denunciations of their conduct, we cannot tell. It certainly was a duty to point out this gross neglect, resulting in star vation, when their papers admitted, urged and justified it; and must have been gross when Mr Foote, one of their Congress, felt called upon by his humanity to denounce it publicly in that body. The Christian Equivalent of War (Classic Reprint) by David Willard Lyon Pdf

Excerpt from The Christian Equivalent of War This book is meant to aid the fair-minded student in his study of the problems involved in war. But war will serve only as an illustration - tangible and vivid of much that lies deeper. By seeking out the elemental factors involved in the use of force, whether they mani fest themselves in international, civic, or social relations, or in personal conduct, and by comparing them with the principles of Jesus, we shall ever be discovering new and far-reaching applications of these principles, and thus new demonstrations of their validity and power. The War and Its Issues by John Oman Pdf

Excerpt from The War and Its Issues: An Attempt at a Christian Judgment While the original germ of this paper was a speech at Queens' College, it grew to its present form and dimensions purely through the impulse to think out my own relations to the present crisis. Though work done in that way, without thought of a public, is apt to be heedless of the possibilities of misunderstanding, the result is now published, partly in the hope that in the present great perplexity even its imperfect guidance may help to a better solution, and partly from a sense that, if what one hears in the ear in the closet demands moral co-operation, it should be preached on the house-top. The Christian in War Time (Classic Reprint) by Frederick Henry Lynch Pdf

Excerpt from The Christian in War Time The United States is gradually beginning to realize that it really is at war. Prices are soaring, conscription has passed and when it becomes operative we shall realize as we have not yet done that war is upon us. Commissions have been here from England, France, Italy and Russia conferring with the government on methods of warfare, and on the part the United States is to take in the conflict. There are a great many good Christians in the United States who do not like war but who feel that this war was inevitable and that the country was dragged into it by no fault of its own. They have found it difficult to reconcile themselves to it, and probably would not have been able to do so for the excuses given for entering upon the war. How that they have discovered that the real reason for President Wilson taking the step he did was the fear expressed to him by the Allies that the outcome was extremely dubious unless they had immediate help, these people have become more resigned to it. They see that we are faced with two alternatives, Prussianism or democracy ruling the future, and that democracy and all it stands for is in danger of being lost both to the old world and to tire new. The European War by Percy G. Cross Pdf

Excerpt from The European War: Its Causes, Its Surprises and Its Lessons Plainly have I spoken in the following pages out of a full heart. Ugly facts have been bared. I pray that God may use this humble effort to compel soberness, righteousness and godliness in this pres ent world. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth, said our Lord Jesus Christ. Again, For all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword, said the same true voice. Almighty God, open our eyes that we may see our duty, and give us the strength and courage to do our duty even unto death. In the name of Him who died that we might live, even Jesus Christ. War, Progress, and the End of History by Vladimir Soloviev Pdf

Excerpt from War, Progress, and the End of History: Including a Short Story of the Anti-Christ, Three Discussions By the early death of Vladimir Soloviev in 1900 Russia lost her most original and essentially Slavonic thinker. A deep sympathy with mysticism, united to the power of fearlessly probing human consciousness, gave him eminence not only among the philosophers of Russia, but of Europe. Born in 1853, Soloviev entered upon life in an atmosphere charged with the elements of change. The emancipation of the serfs opened an era of political experiments, and the ordeal of the Crimean War braced and stimulated the national spirit. It was a time of high aspirations struggling against an undercurrent of philosophic doubt, which exercised an abiding influence upon the sensitive and inquiring mind of Soloviev. He was happy in his parentage; his father, Serge Soloviev, being a historian of high reputation, and his mother a woman of character and mental attainments. She belonged to a noble family of Little Russia, and numbered among her ancestors a great-uncle who had won consideration as a philosophic writer; from this source possibly Soloviev derived the bent of his intellect.
