The Sword of Christ and the World War (Classic Reprint) by Perry James Stackhouse Pdf

Excerpt from The Sword of Christ and the World War The World War has forced many new, pressing, and perplexing problems upon the preacher. To him has been intrusted the gospel of reconciliation, of peace and good will to men, and how to preach that gospel in a world of war when nation is divided against nation and a man's foes are found even in his own national household, is by no means easy for him to determine. He may be successful in evading or ignoring the problems of the higher criticism and the doctrine of evolution; but war, with its terrible, insistent, and heart-searching questions, is a brutal, stubborn fact that must be met and answered. Let it be granted that the preacher has fallen upon difficult days. New questions which go to the very core of religion and ethics are hurled at him. A hundred new demands are being made upon his time, and when he is asked to give up his service for the advertising of liberty loans or for a discussion of the problems of food conservation, he is sometimes in doubt as to whether the calls of country are the calls of God. The Sword of the Spirit by Joseph Fort Newton Pdf

Excerpt from The Sword of the Spirit: Britain and America in the Great War F the City Temple has been an international Shrine almost from the beginning of its history, it is doubly so to-day, not alone from the fact that its present Minister is an American citizen, but still more because of the reunion of English speaking peoples drawn together by a common peril and a common ideal. The call of an American preacher to so famous a pulpit was itself an overture of friend ship of good-will, and was so understood by men of all creeds in America; and in obedience to that spirit the Minister himself has been led to conceive of his responsibility in a two-fold aspect - as a Christian Ambassador and an Interpreter of one nation to another. But since these two great people are really one, having a common genius and a common historic inheritance, these two Offices are also one, since we can best understand each other in the Christian at mosphere, which is the spirit of fraternity. The European War by Percy G. Cross Pdf

Excerpt from The European War: Its Causes, Its Surprises and Its Lessons Plainly have I spoken in the following pages out of a full heart. Ugly facts have been bared. I pray that God may use this humble effort to compel soberness, righteousness and godliness in this pres ent world. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth, said our Lord Jesus Christ. Again, For all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword, said the same true voice. Almighty God, open our eyes that we may see our duty, and give us the strength and courage to do our duty even unto death. In the name of Him who died that we might live, even Jesus Christ. The Call of a World Task in War Time, Vol. 1 by J. Lovell Murray Pdf

Excerpt from The Call of a World Task in War Time, Vol. 1: The Demands Which Are Being Made in These War Years for a New Expression of International Christianity Foremost among the profound and urgent messages which God is uttering to His Church in this awful hour, is the clarion call for reality in religion. To that call let us direct our first attention. We are moving into the new world order through blood and fire. It was little more than yesterday that an influential New York daily wrote thus of the pros peets of universal peace: It was nearer last year than it was the year before; it is nearer this year than it was last year; it is nearer now, today, than it was on the first day of the present year, and, with an advancing step, that has never gone backward, through all these years, the prophecy is safe and beautiful that we are marching swiftly into the vast open of universal peace. Won by the Sword by G. A. Henty Pdf

Excerpt from Won by the Sword: A Tale of the Thirty Years War N my preface to the Lion of flu: [vorlfi I expressed a hope that I might some day be able to continue the history of the Thirty Years' War. The deaths of Gustavus and his great rival Wallenstein and the crushing defeat of the Swedes and their allies at the battle of Nordlingen brought the first period of that war to a close. Hostilities, indeed, never ceased, but the Swedes no longer played the leading part on the Pro testant side that they had hitherto occupied. Oxenstiern, the great chancellor of Sweden, saw that the only hope of eventual success lay in engaging France in the struggle, and he and the Duke of Weimar went to Paris and pointed out to Richelieu that unless France intervened, Austria must become the master of all Germany, and as the ally of Spain would have it in her power to completely dominate France. Richelieu perceived the opportunity, made a treaty with the Swedes and Weimar, and engaged to grant large subsidies to the former, and to send an army to co-operate with the latter. Christ and War (Classic Reprint) by William Ernest Wilson Pdf

Excerpt from Christ and War The author, in common with all who desire peace between the nations, owes a debt of gratitude to Norman Angell. For, whether one agrees or disagrees with his arguments in The Great Illusion, it is undeniable that he has brought the question of peace and war prominently and freshly before the public in this and other countries. 80 that peace advocates no longer speak to deaf ears. Hitherto they have found the public unwilling to listen to them, and inclined to view their theories as a mild form of insanity. The Great Illusion has changed this attitude by showing that between civilised states war can bring no gain to the victor, and, under certain circumstances, may damage him even more than the vanquished. At once per petual peace has become an ideal which the practical man can recognise as capable of realisation. The Christian and humanitarian peace advocacy claimed that war is wrong and should therefore be abolished. At this the practical man shook his head and said, War is certainly horrible; it is bad; but it is necessary. It is part of the nature of things; you can't abolish it. Now, if Norman Angell is right in his main contentions, it is no longer possible to say that war cannot be abolished. For it is clearly to the advantage of all men to abolish it; all that stands in the way is human ignorance and prejudice and in every department of life these are constantly being overcome. Excerpt from Nonresistance, or the Spirit of Christianity Restored When gliding on with the smooth tide of popular opinion, all seemed to lend a smile - I knew not a foe. But smce the time has come which tries men's souls, as to whether they are really the servants of Christ, all turn against me, - lnsomuch, that it may well be said of me, as of Elijah of old: I am left alone, and they seek my life. Rom. 11 z 3. But, smce all the world, at least the wrse and prudent (1 Cor. 1 are against me, It becomes necessary to look again, and to pry yet deeper into the Royal law of the Prince of Peace, to see whether it is possible that I can be mista ken in that which, though hidden from the wise and prudent, (matt. 11: is yet so plain, The way-faring men, though fools shall not err therem. But having no Idea of preparing a Work for the press, when first I took my pen, I only intended to write out these things, for my own benefit, to guide my feet into that straight and narrow way, which leads unto life; Matt. 7: 14. And to put it in a form suitable to leave in the hands of my dear Mother and loved friends, that they might know my life was lost for Christ's sake, (matt. 16: should the want of a provisron in our law, for those who think We ought to obey God, rather than man, (acts 5: cause me to have to share a place With the Christian martyrs. And though I have now concluded to have a few copies printed, I yet think It unnecessary to circulate them be fore the close of the war for I find the saying, No man regards the scriptures, when his Interest is at stake, is too true, for men at present to yield obedience to the law of The Prince of Peace.
