Christian Ethics and the Moral Psychologies by Don S. Browning Pdf

Interest in psychology permeates our culture, with psychological solutions advanced for a host of moral dilemmas. How should ethically minded Christians include insights from such disciplines as psychoanalysis, cognitive moral development, and neuroscience in their theological reflection? Don Browning offers a serious proposal for combining these disciplines with the best in ethical reflection from a Christian standpoint. Along the way, he introduces readers to the moral psychology work of Sigmund Freud, Carol Gilligan, Antonio Damasio, and others, opening up a dialogue between their work and the hermeneutics of Hans-Georg Gadamer and Paul Ricoeur. Browning also recognizes the potential limits of the conversation between Christian ethics and the moral psychologies, pointing out where they must diverge.

The Logic of Love by Andrew J. B. Cameron Pdf

Overviewing what makes the intersection between emotion and ethics so confusing, this book surveys an older wisdom in how to manage it, using a range of Christian theologians and sources. More important even than 'managing', we begin to see a vision for a better set of affections to grow within and among us. In this vision emerges a practical and nuanced account of what the Christian tradition sometime summarises as 'love'. How may we recover a deep affection for what matters, both within ourselves and together in groups? This book also dialogues with a new movement in moral psychology, 'social intuitionism'. Cameron argues that researchers in this discipline have interests and conclusions that sometimes overlap with Christian sources, even where their respective lenses differ. In this way, the book overviews recent trends in moral psychology against a recent historical and contemporary cultural backdrop, whilst assaying major sources in Christian theology that offer guidance on moral psychology.

Morality of the Heart by Charles M. Shelton Pdf

Using developmental psychological theory from Lawrence Kohlberg's theory of moral development, Norma Hann's emphasis on the role of emotion and defense mechanisms in self-perceptions related to morality, and Carol Gilligan's theory of sexual differences in ethics, as well as Martin Hoffman's theory of empathic development, Shelton constructs a moral theory rooted in the human capacity for empathy. He considers how empathy is developed, how emotions may be developed, and how persons become blind to their own immorality, ending with a brief caution about the limits of empathy. Recommended for all libraries, but especially for public and seminary libraries.

Christian Morality by Geoffrey W. Sutton,Brandon Schmidly Pdf

Should society care about Christian morality? Are Christians out of touch with complex moral decision-making? Christian Morality: An Interdisciplinary Framework for Thinking about Contemporary Moral Issues provides readers with a framework for identifying and applying Christian moral principles to divisive issues. First, readers learn of the theological and philosophical foundations of Christian ethics. Two additional chapters explain how personal and social factors influence our capacity to think critically and Christianly about morality. Second, readers will learn about forming Christian moral judgments by seeing how different thinkers address six contemporary moral issues: abortion, same-sex relationships, equal treatment of men and women in the workplace, sex education, and racial bias in incarceration polices.

Personal Problems of Conduct and Religion by J.G. McKenzie Pdf

Originally published in 1932, Professor McKenzie, author of ‘Souls in the Making’, had been deeply interested for years in helping those afflicted with nervous troubles, moral conflicts, or religious doubts. Each chapter of this book deals with some concrete problem which he had actually faced with one of his patients. He was convinced that many of the severer forms of neuroticism could be prevented if treated with understanding, and that many a parent could have been saved from making a fatal mistake in coping with a ‘difficult’ child, if they had only been taught to deal with such. The practical character of this book can best be judged by a glance at a few of the topics discussed: ‘An Adolescent Problem’, ‘The Problem of Growing Up’, ‘The Troubles of Old Age’, ‘Psychology of Sleeplessness’, ‘The Delinquent Child’, ‘Our Regrets and Our Fears’, ‘Psychology of Faith’.

A House Divided by Geoffrey W. Sutton Pdf

A House Divided helps answer the question, how do Christians form moral judgments about sex-linked issues? After analyzing key differences between conservative and progressive Christians on such divisive issues as abortion, sex education, and same-sex marriage, readers will learn how a combination of four factors can lead to principled Christian morality. First, a review of diverse interpretive comments on relevant Scriptures can help identify a foundation for agreement as well as sharpen differences. Second, a review of psychological factors can help identify prejudices, personality traits, and powerful emotions that intensify and color public debate. Third, new research on moral psychology will add six dimensions of analysis to appreciating the reasons conservatives and progressives draw upon when forming moral judgments. And finally, knowledge about sexual attraction, sexual orientation, conception, and sexual health is vital to thinking ethically about the specific issues addressed in this book.

Cain's Lament by Richard Hughes Pdf

This book presents an original Christian moral psychology based upon the Cain and Abel story and discusses epilepsy, the Cain complex, and biblical lament. Special attention is devoted to moral emotions - rage, compassion, shame, and joy - as they flare up in children and family relationships in relation to an enemy. Lament is a cry of anger that erupts in protest against unfair suffering and that strives for justice through trust in God. As the first prayer of the Bible, Cain's lament reflects the pain of all those who commit evil to vindicate injustice.

Don Browning and Psychology by Terry D. Cooper Pdf

Psychologist of religion, ethicist, theological psychologist, cultural critic, philosophical anthropologist, marriage and family expert, practical theologian, and religion and law scholar -- these are some of the many labels one could use to describe the history of Don Browning's work. Yet in spite of the multi-faceted nature of Browning's work, abiding themes and central concerns consistently emerge. Perhaps the title which best describes Browning's noteworthy contributions is that of 'horizon analyst.' Browning is always at his best when he is helping us see the world of implicit assumptions and normative images which govern various perspectives. He has an eye for metaphors which, as his mentor Ricoeur famously said, give rise to thought. Perhaps Browning's greatest academic asset has been his ability to explore the philosophical underpinnings of various psychological theories. This book focuses on Browning's rich investigative journey into Freud's dual instinct model, the relationship between human biology and culture, evolutionary psychology, William James' instinctual pluralism, Erik Erickson's notion of generativity, the ethical implications of self-actualization in the humanistic psychologies of Rogers and Maslow, evil and self-realization in Carl Jung, the place of self-injury in the thought of Heinz Kohut, as well as other issues. Beginning with a discussion of Browning's critical hermeneutical approach, heavily influenced by Gadamer, Ricoeur, and David Tracy, this book then systematically explores Browning's critical assessments of the most significant contemporary psychological movements.

Moral Nexus by James B. Nelson Pdf

A quarter of a century ago, James Nelson anticipated the impact of church socialization and its relation to individual moral behavior and identification as well as much of the current concern with character and community. Utilizing principles from the behavioral and social sciences, Nelson argues compellingly that we are social selves whose personal identities and patterns of morality are inexplicable apart from the groups and communities with which we most significantly identify. Thus, Christian ethics and Christian community can be understood only in relation to each other.

Edification-Journal of the Society of Christian Psychology by Todd Speidell Pdf

THE RAY S. ANDERSON COLLECTION by WIPF & STOCK PUBLISHERS Ray Sherman Anderson (1925-2009) worked the soil and tended the animals of a South Dakota farm, planted and pastored a church in Southern California, and completed a PhD degree in theology with Thomas F. Torrance in New College Edinburgh. He began his professional teaching career at Westmont College, and then taught and served in various administrative capacities at Fuller Theological Seminary for thirty-three years (retiring as Professor Emeritus of Theology and Ministry). While teaching at Fuller, he served as a parish pastor, always insisting that theology and ministry go hand-in-hand. The pastoral theologian who began his teaching career in middle age penned twenty-seven books. Like Karl Barth, Prof. Anderson articulated a theology of and for the church based on God's own ministry of revelation and reconciliation in the world. As professor and pastor, he modeled an incarnational, evangelical passion for the healing of humanity by Jesus Christ, who is both God's self- revelation to us and the reconciliation of our broken humanity to the triune God. His gift of relating suffering and alienated humans to Christ existing as community (Dietrich Bonhoeffer) is a recurrent motif throughout his life, ministry, and works. The Ray S. Anderson Collection comprises books by Ray Anderson, an introductory text to his theology by Christian D. Kettler, two edited volumes that celebrate his distinguished academic career (􏰀ncarnational 􏰁inistr􏰂: The Presence of Christ in Church, Society, and Family and On Being Christian . . . and Human), and a reprint of an E􏰃ification volume that focuses on Ray Anderson's contributions to the field of Christian Psychology. A word of gratitude is due to The Society of Christian Psychology and its parent organization, The American Association for Christian Counselors, for their permission to make the E􏰃ification issue available in book form. Jim Tedrick of Wipf and Stock Publishers deserves a special word of thanks for publishing many of Ray Anderson's books and commissioning this collection of works to continue his legacy. Todd H. Speidell, General Editor
