The Art of Advertising by Julie Anne Lambert Pdf

Exploring the developing practice of advertising in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, The Art of Advertising presents illuminating essays alongside striking illustrations from the John Johnson Collection of Printed Ephemera. Featuring rarely-seen images from the 1700s to the 1900s by a wide range of artists, including influential illustrators such as John Hassall and Dudley Hardy, this attractive book invites us to consider both the intended and unintended messages of the advertisements of the past. During this period, advertisers pushed the boundaries of a new medium by exploring innovative printing techniques, manipulating language, inspiring new art forms, and introducing advertising to unexpected formats such as calendars, bookmarks, and games. This collection of essays examines the extent to which these standalone advertisements--which have survived by chance and are now divorced from their original purpose--provide information not just on the sometimes bizarre products being sold, but also on class, gender, Britishness, war, fashion, and shopping. Starting with the genesis of an advertisement through the creation of text, image, print and format, the authors go on to examine the changing profile of the consumer, notably the rise of the middle classes, and the way in which manufacturers and retailers identified and targeted their markets. Finally, they look at advertisements as documents that both reveal and conceal details about society, politics, and local history. With contributions from Michael Twyman, Lynda Mugglestone, Helen Clifford, Ashley Jackson, and David Tomkins, The Art of Advertising is a richly informative assessment of the role advertising plays in our culture.

Wars I Have Seen by Gertrude Stein Pdf

A memoir of the Nazi occupation—and the Allied liberation—of France, from the iconic author of Tender Buttons and The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas Intimate friends of Gertrude Stein, aware of her indomitable courage and resourcefulness, were not at all surprised when she emerged unscathed from the Nazi occupation of France, her Picasso collection intact and her poodle, Basket, wagging his tail contentedly at her heels. But Stein had her full share of troubles and excitement in those four years, and it is this unbelievable period that she documents in full in this most graphic and revealing of all her books. Written in longhand under the very noses of the Nazis, Wars I Have Seen is the on-the-spot story of what the people of France endured. From the early days, in which Stein was more concerned with foraging food for her dogs than with the fate of democracy, to the coming of the Americans, which gave her the thrill of a lifetime, Stein depicts the heroic exploits of the French Resistance fighters and the excitement of the battle for liberation with all of her signature literary panache.

Dog Days at the White House by Traphes Bryant,Frances Spatz Leighton Pdf

What makes this book worth reprinting is not the canine dogs described in this book but the human female kinds of dogs, the women who slept with the presidents who were not necessarily the wives. This book, nearly forgotten, was the first to reveal numerous presidential affairs. It was the first to report that President Kennedy had an insatiable appetite for women, the human kind. It was the original source for a story that has been repeated many times since. This story is found on page 38 of this book. The story goes: Jacqueline was in the presidential bed in the White House bedroom, when she discovered a woman's panties in between the sheets. She held up the panties she had found with two fingers in much the same way that she would hold up a dead mouse and she said to the president, "Would you please find out whose these are, because they are not my size?" It is a fact that every president in more than one hundred years has had a dog, with the exception of President Clinton, who had a cat, although even Clinton did finally get a dog near the end of his term. Not all of these presidents were dog lovers. In some cases, the President obviously got a dog just to get the Dog Lover's Vote. President Obama must have read this book, because when he was elected to office, he knew that the first thing he had to do was get a dog. This book starts with the punch line to a joke: "This book is dedicated to man's best friend - women."
