Class and Class Conflict in Industrial Society (Classic Reprint) by Ralf Dahrendorf Pdf

Excerpt from Class and Class Conflict in Industrial Society Generalizing theoretical formulation and its empirical test are balanced in the present investigation. With R. K. Merton I regard theories of the middle range as the immediate task of sociological research: generalizations that are inspired by or oriented towards concrete observations. However, the exposition of the theory of social classes and class conflict stands in the center of this investiga tion. The resume of Marx's theory of class, the largely descriptive account of some historical changes of the past century, and the eriti cal examination of some earlier theories of class, including that of Marx, lead up to the central theoretical chapters; with the analysis of post-capitalist society in terms of class theory a first empirical test of my theoretical position is intended. The whole investigation re mains in the middle range also in that it is, as its title indicates, confined to industrial society. Class Struggle and the Industrial Revolution by John Foster Pdf

Class Struggle and the Industrial Revolution represents both a continuation of, and a stark contrast to, the impressive tradition of social history which has grown up in Britain in the last two decades. Its use of sophisticated quantitative techniques for the dissection of urban social structures will serve as a model for subsequent research workers. This work examines the impact of industrialization on the social development of the cotton manufacturing town of Oldham from 1790-1860; in particular how the experience of industrial capitalism aided the formation of a coherent organized mass class consciousness capable by 1830 of controlling all the vital organs of local government in the town. This will be a useful study to any student of the industrial revolution.

Contemporary Wars and Conflicts over Land and Water in Africa by Carlson Anyangwe Pdf

Contemporary Wars and Conflicts over Land and Water in Africa highlights Africa’s tragedy of endless conflicts. Rich in case studies, it examines violent conflicts and Africa’s approaches to conflict resolution. The case studies show that Africa continues to be a chronically unstable space tormented especially by frequent and devastating civil wars of which ethnicity, religion, and bad governance are some of the root causes. These conflicts have occasioned massive human rights abuses, arrested development, reversed or slowed economic growth, created a vicious circle of instability and hunger, and exacerbated levels of poverty and disease in the continent. In the final part of this book, Carlson Anyangwe considers indigenous mechanisms for settling disputes, post-conflict transitional justice systems, and the African Union conflict-resolution mechanism that relies, as it does, on the United Nations’ peace and security framework and the peace and security functions of the African regional economic organizations.

This book, first published in 1977 and based on a selection of eleven papers given at a conference of the British Sociological Association, focuses upon aspects of continuity and change in modern society, comparing and contrasting dimensions of class, cleavage and control in capitalist and socialist societies. This book is key reading for students of both sociology and business studies.

Straight Lick by J. Ronald Green Pdf

A critical examination of the films of Oscar Micheaux. One of the most original and successful filmmakers of all time, Oscar Micheaux was born into a rural, working-class, African-American family in mid-America in 1884, yet he created an impressive legacy in commercial cinema. Between 1913 and 1951 he wrote, directed, and distributed some forty-three feature films, more than any other black filmmaker in the world, a record of production that is likely to stand for a very long time. Micheaux's work was founded upon the concern for class mobility, or uplift, for African Americans. Uplift provided the context for Micheaux's extensive commentary on racist cinema, such as D. W. Griffith's 1915 blockbuster, The Birth of a Nation, which Micheaux "answered" with his very early films Within Our Gates and Symbol of the Unconquered. Uplift explains Micheaux's use of "negative images" of African Americans as well as his multi-pronged campaign against stereotype and caricature in American culture. His campaign produced a body of films saturated with a nuanced intertexual "signifying," boldly and repeatedly treating controversial topics that face white censorship time after time, topics ranging from white mob and Klan violence to light-skin-color fetish to white financing of black cultural productions.
