Classics in Hydrocarbon Chemistry by Henning Hopf Pdf

The two basic building units carbon and hydrogen can be combined in a million different ways to give a plethora of fascinating organic compounds. Henning Hopf presents not only the most remarkable structures and properties of hydrocarbon compounds but shows in a clear presentation and with great didactic skill how molecules like dodecahedrane, superphane or annulenes challenge the synthetic skills of every organic chemist. To make the information more accessible, especially to the novice, the author carefully analyzes the synthetic problem, explains each synthetic step and gives hints on alternative methods and potential pitfalls. Numerous references to useful reviews and the original literature make this book an indispensable source of further information. Special emphasis is placed on the skillful use of graphics and schemes: Synthetic (retro)analyses, reaction sequences, and crucial steps are presented in blue boxed sections within the text. Graduate students and researchers alike will find this book a gold mine of useful information essential for their daily work. Every organic chemist will want to have a copy on his or her desk. With a foreword by W. von Eggers Doering.

Hydrocarbon Chemistry by George A. Olah,Árpád Molnár Pdf

Hydrocarbons and their transformations play major roles in chemistry as raw materials and sources of energy. Diminishing petroleum supplies, regulatory problems, and environmental concerns constantly challenge chemists to rethink and redesign the industrial applications of hydrocarbons. Written by Nobel Prize-winner George Olah and hydrocarbon expert Árpád Molnár, the completely revised and expanded Second Edition of Hydrocarbon Chemistry provides an unparalleled contemporary assessment of the field, presenting basic concepts, current research, and future applications. Hydrocarbon Chemistry begins by discussing the general aspects of hydrocarbons, the separation of hydrocarbons from natural sources, and the synthesis from C1 precursors with recent developments for possible future applications. Each successive chapter deals with a specific type of hydrocarbon transformation. The Second Edition includes a new section on the chemical reduction of carbon dioxide–focusing on catalytic, ionic, electrocatalytic, photocatalytic, and ezymatic reductions–as well as a new chapter on new catalysts and activation methods, combinatorial chemistry, and environmental chemistry. Other topics covered include: Major processes of the petrochemical industry, such as cracking, reforming, isomerization, and alkylation Derivation reactions to form carbon-heteroatom bonds Hydrocarbon oxidations Metathesis Oligomerization and polymerization of hydrocarbons All chapters have been updated by adding sections on recent developments to review new advances and results. Essential reading for practicing scientists in industry, polymer and catalytic chemists, as well as researchers and graduate students, Hydrocarbon Chemistry, Second Edition remains the benchmark text in its field.

The Chemistry of the Non-Benzenoid Hydrocarbons and Their Simple Derivatives (Classic Reprint) by Benjamin T. Brooks Pdf

Excerpt from The Chemistry of the Non-Benzenoid Hydrocarbons and Their Simple Derivatives The beautiful, interesting, and often facile chemistry of the benzene hydrocarbons has somewhat overshadowed the chemistry of the aliphatic open chain and cyclic non-benzenoid hydrocarbons. Certainly the chemistry of the former series has been much more fully rounded out. Judging from the customary method of treatment accorded them in our textbooks, there is some confusion in the arrangement of subject matter which does not give the student a proper idea of the close relationships and similarity of chemical behavior possessed by all the non-benzenoid hydrocarbons. Mr. Wells, in his "Outline of History," says: "There is a natural tendency in the human mind to exaggerate the differences and resemblances upon which classification is based, to suppose that things called by different names are altogether different, and that things called by the same name are practically identical. This tendency to exaggerate classification produces a thousand evils, . .." This tendency, which Mr. Wells deplores, is well shown by the use of the term "hydro-aromatic" hydrocarbons and the classification of cyclohexane and its derivatives with benzene. This term is still employed for cyclohexane and its simple derivatives, although its behavior is almost identical with that of normal hexane. The same applies to cyclopentane and its simple derivatives as compared with normal pentane, yet cyclopentane cannot be termed a "hydro-aromatic" hydrocarbon. Cycloheptane, cyclooctane, cyclononane, cyclobutane and cyclopropane should certainly be classed and described together with cyclohexane, as indeed Aschan and a few others have done. The differences in chemical properties between benzenoid ring systems and Non-Benzenoid hydrocarbons are well established, but in spite of the enormous amount of work done, have not yet received adequate explanation. As regards the aliphatic hydrocarbons proper, these fare very badly in most works on organic chemistry, particularly in the briefer textbooks. Usually, the entirely erroneous statement, or implication, is made that the so-called type reactions given for the first two or three members of the methane series hold good for the higher members. Modeling Marvels by Errol G. Lewars Pdf

The aim of this highly original book is to survey a number of chemical compounds that some chemists, theoretical and experimental, find fascinating. This is the first book to feature compounds/classes of compounds of theoretical interest that have been studied theoretically but have defied synthesis. It is hoped that this collection of idiosyncratic molecules will appeal to chemists who find the study of chemical oddities interesting and, on occasion, even rewarding.

Roald Hoffmann on the Philosophy, Art, and Science of Chemistry by Jeffrey Kovac,Michael Weisberg Pdf

Nobel laureate Roald Hoffmann's contributions to chemistry are well known. Less well known, however, is that over a career that spans nearly fifty years, Hoffmann has thought and written extensively about a wide variety of other topics, such as chemistry's relationship to philosophy, literature, and the arts, including the nature of chemical reasoning, the role of symbolism and writing in science, and the relationship between art and craft and science. In Roald Hoffmann on the Philosophy, Art, and Science of Chemistry, Jeffrey Kovac and Michael Weisberg bring together twenty-eight of Hoffmann's most important essays. Gathered here are Hoffmann's most philosophically significant and interesting essays and lectures, many of which are not widely accessible. In essays such as "Why Buy That Theory," "Nearly Circular Reasoning," "How Should Chemists Think," "The Metaphor, Unchained," "Art in Science," and "Molecular Beauty," we find the mature reflections of one of America's leading scientists. Organized under the general headings of Chemical Reasoning and Explanation, Writing and Communicating, Art and Science, Education, and Ethics, these stimulating essays provide invaluable insight into the teaching and practice of science.
