Clearly by James Chen Pdf

Poor vision is the largest unaddressed disability in the world today. An estimated 2.5 billion people, mostly living in the poorest parts of the planet and a majority of whom are women, cannot see clearly and have no access to treatment. Yet for 80 per cent of the 2.5 billion, all they need is a simple pair of prescription spectacles. Tackling this problem would unlock billions of dollars in productivity gains. It would give young people a better chance in school, would help women live better lives, and is critical to eliminating poverty. However, despite the potentially huge return on investment, basic eye care is low on the list of priorities for poor countries and donors. In this extraordinary book, businessman and philanthropist James Chen asks why this should be, and describes his mission to help the world to see. In Clearly, Chen reveals the personal stories of some of those afflicted and identifies the barriers to delivering access to glasses for all. He delivers a passionate call to governments to act and calls on business, technology and medicine to come together and find a solution to this global problem.

A Terrible Beauty by Nancy Baker Pdf

A classic fairy tale gets a horrifying, adult twist, in this suspenseful romance by the author of The Night Inside. Twenty years ago, Simon Donovan, an antiquities scholar, wronged Sidonie Moreau, his former research assistant—and she has not forgotten. Threatening to expose him, she demands he come to her remote mansion in the mountainous north to repay his debt. But she wasn’t expecting his son, Matthew, a struggling painter, to take his place. Matthew is intrigued by the mysterious Sidonie, but when she reveals what she wants, he is horrified: his blood, willingly given. No harm will come to him if he refuses, and his days leave him free to paint as he pleases, but each night she must ask and he must answer. Trapped by the vast wilderness all around them, Matthew has no choice but to submit to her terms. Although he vows to never surrender to Sidonie, Matthew cannot ignore her smile, her charm, or the sorrow in her eyes. Grappling with secrets within his heart, tempted by desire and despair, he knows one night he just might say yes . . . Praise for A Terrible Beauty “A polished and enchanting tale. . . . It is, in a word, breathtaking.” —Ottawa Citizen “Baker’s prose is lush and sensual . . . she has a real gift for making the fantastic seem plausible and investing the mundane with eerie significance.” —Sunday Sun (Toronto) “A Terrible Beauty is modern Canadian Gothic. . . . Nancy Baker shows her mastery of the form—the mysterious letter, the journey into the wilderness, the shadows that hide from the flickering firelight—and her real affection for a good ol’ fashioned vampire yarn.” —Telegraph-Journal “Baker’s narrative is seductive and compelling. Like Rice, she transcends the horror genre.” —The Province “Don’t hold your breath waiting for Disney to film this very adult and erotic version of Beauty and the Beast.” —Winnipeg Free Press

Guidelines for Stair Safety by John Archea,Belinda Lowenhaupt Collins,Fred I. Stahl Pdf

This report summarizes information and research in the area of stair use and provides design guidelines for improving stair safety. These guidelines are directed toward seven major categories of stairway design and construction: (1) structural integrity and quality of stairs, (2) physical attributes of stair surfaces, (3) appearance of stair surfaces, (4) handrails, (5) physical attributes of the surrounding stairway environment, (6) appearance of the surrounding stairway environment, and (7) signs and symbols. In general, the recommendations offered in this report derive from the premise that stairway accidents are caused by human perceptual errors, which are frequently triggered by some flaw in the design or construction of stairways themselves. Evidence describing the severity and frequency of residential stairway hazards, and supporting premises underlying design guidelines were obtained from epidemiological, experimental, exploratory, and survey research sources. General directions for future investigation are suggested.
