Clementine Camille by Ronald John Vierling Pdf

Ronald Vierling's first novel in the Clementine trilogy, Clementine Camille: Volume One: An American Romance, ends when African-American Clementine Brown and Caucasian-American Tyler Raymond's twin daughters are six years old. Clementine Camille: Volume Two: An American Memoir begins ten years later, when the couple's twin daughters, Josephine and Abigail, are fifteen, which means Clementine and Tyler not only face issues that naturally arise with raising teen-age daughters, they must also deal with those issues that attend their daughters' mixed racial heritage. Thus, while An American Romance chronicles how Clementine and Tyler became adults and parents as well as the story of the family and friends who shaped them, the events that unfold in An American Memoir test everything they have come to believe about love and loss, about race and identity, about ambition and the sometimes contradictory consequences of achievement.

FALLING IN LOVE AT THE END OF THE ROAD by Ronald John Vierling Pdf

A Most Unlikely Likely American Tale Appearances can be deceptive. First impressions can be misleading. People who might seem so different that they could never become a couple sometimes turn around and fall in love. Perhaps that’s part of what makes the world interesting. Falling in Love at the End of the Road is that kind of story. A young, unmarried Haitian woman, Isabel Jean, fleeing with her ten-year-old daughter as far away from the dangers of violent abuse as she can – all the way to Ely, Minnesota – crosses paths with a mature Caucasian widower, Samuel Woolf, who has lived in lonely isolation in his family’s lake house for two years following his beloved wife’s death. Initially drawn together by her financial and his emotional needs, as time passes, they discover their apparent ethnic differences are superficial; their psychological similarities are profound. However, be advised: while this tale might initially appear predictable and simple, it is, in fact, deceptively compelling and complex – as compelling as the heroine and hero’s evolving relationship and as complex as the surprising if terrifying climax. Isabel Ebony Jean and Samuel Singer Woolf may well be the most unlikely likely couple modern readers have ever had the experience of meeting. Joyce Davidsen M.Ed., University of Central Florida

Clémentine Deliss by Clémentine Deliss Pdf

For quite some time now, ethnographic museums in Europe have been compelled to legitimate themselves. Their exhibition-making has become a topic of discussion, as has the contentious history of their collections, which have come about through colonial appropriation. Clearly, this cannot continue. That the situation can be different is something that Clémentine Deliss explores in her current publication. She offers an intriguing mix of autobiographically-informed novel and conceptual thesis on contemporary art and anthropology. Reflections on her own work while she was Director of Frankfurt's Weltkulturen Museum (Museum of World Cultures) are interwoven with the explorations of influential filmmakers, artists and writers. She introduces the Metabolic Museum as an interventionist laboratory for remediating ethnographic collections for future generations. CLÉMENTINE DELISS has achieved international renown as a curator, cultural historian and publisher of artist's books. In her role as Director of the Weltkulturen Museum in Frankfurt, as a curator, and as a professor and researcher at eminent institutes and academies, she focuses on transdisciplinary and transcultural exchanges. She is Associate Curator of KW Berlin and Guest Professor at the Academy of Arts, Hamburg.

The Cambridge Companion to Winston Churchill by Allen Packwood Pdf

Viewed by some as the saviour of his nation, and by others as a racist imperialist, who was Winston Churchill really, and how has he become such a controversial figure? Combining the best of established scholarship with important new perspectives, this Companion places Churchill's life and legacy in a broader context. It highlights different aspects of his life and personality, examining his core beliefs, working practices, key relationships and the political issues and campaigns that he helped shape, and which in turn shaped him. Controversial subjects, such as area bombing, Ireland, India and Empire are addressed in full, to try and explain how Churchill has become such a deeply divisive figure. Through careful analysis, this book presents a full and rounded picture of Winston Churchill, providing much needed nuance and context to the debates about his life and legacy.

Balzac and Violence by Owen Heathcote Pdf

Violence is one of the main themes in the novels of Hanore de Balza. Executions, muders, savagery and death accompany the conspiracies and the turbulence that characterise his post-Revolutionary times, from the terror to Napoleonic campaigns and then to the upheavals of 1830 and 1848. Despite the importance of violence in Balzac, this is the first book-length study of the topic. The book begins by tracing the links between violence and Balzac's approach to the novel, not merely in terms of violent content, but, equally importantly, in terms of the form associated with that content. From and content combine to perpetuate and naturalise violence and suffering. After charting examples of this combination in one of Balzac's earliest fictions, the books moves on to the links between violence and place violence and history (Catherine de Medicis; the Terror), between violence and place(from his native Touraine to sickness in Paris), and between violence and gender/sexuality. It alos examines the representiation of violence in the form of spoken or written death. Throughout the analysis, the bokk asks the following question: do Balzac's novels reinforce or counteract the literary text's apparent love-affair with violence?

Denis Diderot 'Rameau's Nephew' - 'Le Neveu de Rameau' by Marian Hobson Pdf

In a famous Parisian chess café, a down-and-out, HIM, accosts a former acquaintance, ME, who has made good, more or less. They talk about chess, about genius, about good and evil, about music, they gossip about the society in which they move, one of extreme inequality, of corruption, of envy, and about the circle of hangers-on in which the down-and-out abides. The down-and-out from time to time is possessed with movements almost like spasms, in which he imitates, he gestures, he rants. And towards half past five, when the warning bell of the Opera sounds, they part, going their separate ways. Probably completed in 1772-73, Denis Diderot’s Rameau’s Nephew fascinated Goethe, Hegel, Engels and Freud in turn, achieving a literary-philosophical status that no other work by Diderot shares. This interactive, multi-media and bilingual edition offers a brand new translation of Diderot’s famous dialogue, and it also gives the reader much more. Portraits and biographies of the numerous individuals mentioned in the text, from minor actresses to senior government officials, enable the reader to see the people Diderot describes, and provide a window onto the complex social and political context that forms the backdrop to the dialogue. Links to musical pieces specially selected by Pascal Duc and performed by students of the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris, illuminate the wider musical context of the work, enlarging it far beyond its now widely understood relation to opéra comique. This new edition includes: * Introduction * Original text * English translation * Embedded audio-files * Explanatory notes * Interactive material
