Clinical Lectures on the Principles and Practice of Medicine (Classic Reprint) by John Hughes Bennett Pdf

Excerpt from Clinical Lectures on the Principles and Practice of Medicine IN consequence of the rapid exhaustion of a second edition of this work, I have been called upon to prepare a new one much sooner than I could have anticipated. The whole of it, not withstanding, has been most carefully revised, and the volume extended by the addition of fifty pages, with twenty-one new cases and thirty-four new wood-cuts. I have endeavoured throughout, by reference to indisputable facts, to demonstrate the correctness_ of the principles which have guided my prac tice, and have, i therefore, authenticated every case with the name of its reporter in the hospital books. I have availed myself of numerous illustrations engraved on wood, having long been persuaded that mere description 'of morbid appearances, and especially of those that are made visible by means of the microscope, communicates only feeble or imper feet ideas to others. Of these illustrations, such as are borrowed have the names of their authors appended; such as have no name attached are original. Excerpt from Occasional Lectures on the Practice of Medicine: Addressed Chiefly to the Students of St. Mary's Medical School; To Which Are Appended the Harveian Lectures on the Rheumatism of Childhood, Revised and Corrected Up to Date These Lectures were designed for the assistance of students in the every-day work of their profession, by directing attention to some common errors in medical practice, and by setting forth the importance of certain points in relation to the diagnosis and treatment of disease which are not dealt with in detail in the text books, are rarely treated adequately in clinical teaching, and which are therefore apt to be neglected or over. Clinical Lectures on Diseases of the Nervous System (Classic Reprint) by William Alexander Hammond Pdf

Excerpt from Clinical Lectures on Diseases of the Nervous System The following clinical lectures were delivered at the New York State Hospital for Diseases of the Nervous System, and at the Bellevue Hospital Medical College, by Prof. William A. Hammond, and I have collected them with the hope that they might serve to add something to the clinical literature of nervous diseases. I have endeavored to report these lectures in full, and together with the histories of the cases, which were prepared by myself after careful study and prolonged observation, they constitute a clinical volume which, while it does not claim to he exhaustive, or to embrace all the diseases of the nervous system, will nevertheless be found to contain many of the more important affections of the kind that are commonly met with in practice. As these lectures were intended especially for the benefit of students, the chief aim of the author has been to present merely practical views, fully illustrated by cases, with the results derived from treatment, as far as that was possible; and in so doing he has made no attempt to enter into the pathology or the morbid anatomy, but has confined himself to a full consideration of the symptoms, the causes, and the treatment of each affection, particularly in their relations to the cases. Text Book of a Course of Lectures, on the Theory and Practice of Physic, Vol. 2 by James Jackson Pdf

Excerpt from d104 Book of a Course of Lectures, on the Theory and Practice of Physic, Vol. 2: For the Use of the Medical Students of Harvard University As 'the first part of this text book relates to the general theory of medicine, this second part may. Be considered as relating to the practice. This distinction 19 made, however, rather 1n reference to the title of the professorship I hold, and to the duties belonging to it, than to the exact character of the two parts of the work. The second palt is represented as relating to practice, because it will describe particular diseases, and the treatment adapted to each; yet it will admit and require many theoretical discussions. Lectures on the Theory and Practice of Physic (Classic Reprint) by William Stokes Pdf

Excerpt from Lectures on the Theory and Practice of Physic IN yielding to the wish of the publishers that he would become annotator to the Lectures of Doctor Stokes, and make additions on subjects not included in the course of the distinguished lecturer in the Park Street Medical School, the editor was not unmindful of the responsibility of his task, nor of the comparisons to which his labours would be subjected by critical readers. Mere self-regard would have made him prefer to be the author of a separate work on the Practice of Medicine; in which scope would have been allowed him for various topics necessarily omitted on the present occasion. But he was consoled by the reflexion, that, next to the pleasure of original promulgation of sound precepts Of doctrine and practice by oneself, is that of bearing corroborative testimony to emanations ofthis nature from another person. A Compendium of Lectures on the Theory and Practice of Medicine by Nathaniel Chapman Pdf

Excerpt from A Compendium of Lectures on the Theory and Practice of Medicine: Delivered by Professor Chapman, in the University of Pennsylvania IN presenting this work to the public, the author expects it to stand chiefly upon the merits of the great man, in whose volu minous writings it is founded. Elevated on account of extra ordinary talent and learning, at the youthful age of twenty-six, to the adjunct professorship of Obstetrics, in the University of Pennsylvania, he was, seven years afterwards, elected to the professorship of Materia Medica, and, in the thirty-sixth year of his age, was transferred to the Chair most congenial to his tastes and acquisitions - that of the Institutes and Practice of Physic, and Clinical Medicine. For many years past, with few living competitors, he has stood, confessedly, at the summit of his profession. Distinguish ed for his acquaintance with the Opinions of others, he is per haps unsurpassed for originality. A Synopsis of Lectures on Medical Science by Alva Curtis Pdf

Excerpt from A Synopsis of Lectures on Medical Science: Embracing the Principles of Medicine, or Physiology, Pathology, and Therapeutics, as Discovered in Nature; And the Practice According to Those Principles, as Applied by Art The first numbers of this work having been printed in Columbus, where I could get neither good paper nor new type, make, I regret to say, a Very poor appearance; but I remember that people are not all so unwise as to judge of men by the clothing they wear, nor of'gold by the ore in which it 15 first found: and I hope that they will not condemn this, my first and cheap edition, from the appearance of the first 144 pages, but give it a thorough examination by logic, and demonstration by practice according to its principles, and then they may abriss it, as much as they please. A Manual of the Practice of Medicine (Classic Reprint) by George Hilaro Barlow Pdf

Excerpt from A Manual of the Practice of Medicine I do not, indeed, mean to imply that others have not pre ceded me in the same course, and with distinguished success. The profound and philosophical Outlines of Pathology and Practice of Medicine, of Dr. Alison; the elaborate work on the Principles of Medicine, of Dr. Williams; the eloquent as well as logical and scientific lectures of Dr. Watson and the unfortunately as yet unfinished work of Doctors Bright and Addison, on the Elements of Medicine, are more than sufficient evidence to the contrary. Without, however, in the slightest degree, detracting from the merits of these and similar works; it is, I believe, admitted that we are at present in need of a hand-book for students. The Principles and Practice of Medicine by John Elliotson Pdf

Excerpt from The Principles and Practice of Medicine: Founded on the Most Extensive Experience in Public Hospitals and Private Practice; And Developed in a Course of Lectures Delivered at University College, London The predisposing causes of the disease are, in the first place, a peculiar constitution, and disposition to it. There are some people who, in whatever way they may be exposed to the general causes of inflammation, continually get a sore throat. Whenever they are exposed to the vicissitudes of temperature, coldness, and moisture, they are sure to have inflammation of the throat; and this will run in families, so as to be constitutional. It certainly is predisposed to by mercury. When persons have been much under the influence of mercury, they are very liable (as I formerly mentioned, when speak ing of inflammation in general) to take cold from the vicissitudes of temperature; and the throat is certainly particularly liable to inflammation from this cause. The youthful period of life appears more liable to tonsillitis than old age; for we see far more cases of inflammatory sore-throat in the young, than in the old. Perhaps, among the predisposing causes, I might mention the season of the year - spring. Cases of this description certainly occur (from cold and wet) more frequently in the spring, than at any other period of the year. The exciting causes of the disease are, especially, cold and wet - whether applied to the body at large, or to the feet only. Cold applied in any way, is sufficient to produce the disease. With regard to the treatment, it is rarely necessary to take blood from the arm; but leeches around the throat, are particularly useful. I do not know that it is necessary to apply them internally to the fauces. I think that, applied externally, they answer every purpose they can; and that a free application of leeches, is far superior to blistering. As a general rule, in the treatment of inflammation, we must be upon our guard never to let blistering take the place of the removal of blood. If the inflammation be at all severe, you only harass a patient (in any disease whatever) by blistering, if there be a necessity to take away blood; and, in this disease, blistering is a very painful remedy. A blister produces great anguish, when applied to the throat; and does not, by any means, answer so good a purpose as leeches - the frequent application of leeches externally, under the lower jaw, followed by poultices. The application of poultices not only tends' to encourage the bleeding, but is a constant fomentation - a mode of relaxing the parts, and causing perspira tion there. If the patient be too weak for you to apply leeches, a blister then will be proper; or, if you have applied leeches as much as you think advisable, and still it is requisite to do more before the disease can be controlled, then blisters may be used with advantage. It must be remembered, however, that when a patient can bear leeches, you will find them the most useful.
