This volume argues for an innovative interdisciplinary approach to the analysis and translation of literary style, based on a mutually supportive combination of traditional close reading and ‘distant’ reading, involving corpus-linguistic analysis and text-visualisation. The book contextualizes this approach within the broader story of the development of computer-assisted translation -- including machine translation and the use of CAT tools -- and elucidates the ways in which the approach can lead to better informed translations than those based on close reading alone. This study represents the first systematic attempt to use corpus linguistics and text-visualisation in the process of translating individual literary texts, as opposed to comparing and analysing already published originals and their translations. Using the case study of his translation into English of Uruguayan author Mario Benedetti’s 1965 novel Gracías por el Fuego, Youdale showcases how a close and distant reading approach (CDR) enhances the translator’s ability to detect and measure a variety of stylistic features, ranging from sentence length and structure to lexical richness and repetition, both in the source text and in their own draft translation, thus assisting them with the task of revision. The first chapter provides essential theoretical background focusing on distant reading and cognitive/empirical reception as well as the guidance of reader reception through empathy, all with a particular focus on character representation. Chapter two analyses 300 goodreads reviews on Girl, Woman, Other through distant reading to find out what the contemporary reader focuses on. The 2019 Booker Prize winning novel Girl, Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo has been received extremely well on goodreads. With an average rating of 4.42 out of 5 stars, it compares to all-time favorites like the Lord of the Rings (4.51/5) or Game of Thrones (4.45/5) series. A distant reading of 300 selected goodreads reviews on Girl, Woman, Other revealed that the Booker Prize was frequently mentioned in their reviews. The award serves as “attention booster” for the, up until then, to mainstream readership only lesser known Evaristo. Further, a comparative keyword analysis of the selected reviews and the respective The Guardian review revealed that goodreads readers tend to focus more on characters and review on a more personal/emotional level. Therefore, Girl, Woman, Other is as successful since it establishes a personal relationship between narrative and readers. It was thus the aim of this paper to analyze the respective narrative strategies which manage to establish this connection through both distant as well as close reading strategies.

This book presents a systematic literary comparison of the retranslations by adopting a mixed-method and bottom-up (inductive) approach by developing an empirical corpus approach. This corpus is specifically tailored to identify and study linguistic and non-linguistic modernist features throughout the texts, such as stream of consciousness-indirect interior monologue and free indirect speech. All occurrences are analysed quantitatively in the computations of inferential and comparative statistics, such as tests of time trends, lexical variety, and lexical frequency. The target texts are digitised, and the resulting text files are then analysed using a bespoke, novel computer program capable of the functions not provided by commercially available software such as WordSmith Tools and WMatrix. This methodology enables in-depth explorations of micro- and macro-textual features and allows a mixed-method approach combining close-reading qualitative analysis with systematic quantitative comparisons. The empirical study of the digital corpus of eleven Italian (re)translations of Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse identifies a progressive source-text orientation only in a relatively few aspects of a few target texts. The translators’ presence affects all the examined target texts in terms of register and style under the influence of the Italian translation norms usually attributed to the translation of literary classics. Its intended readership comprises students of the mentioned fields and the general public of readers, editors, and publishers.
