A Dictionary of the Coal Tar Colours (Classic Reprint) by George Henry Hurst Pdf
Excerpt from A Dictionary of the Coal Tar Colours The writer considered that a work of the nature of a dictionary giving brief descriptions of each coal tar colour would fill the want indicated, hence the appearance of this volume. No systematic account of the process of manufacture, or chemical relationships of the colours, has been attempted, but, as far as it has been possible to obtain the information, the chemical composition, formula, method of making, date of introduction, literature relating to it, and its discoverer have been given, while the properties and uses of the colours have had special attention paid to them. The Manufacture of Intermediate Products for Dyes (Classic Reprint) by John Cannell Cain Pdf
Excerpt from The Manufacture of Intermediate Products for Dyes The manufacture of intermediate products for dyes dates from the discovery of mauveine by Perkin in 1856 and the consequent necessity of the production of nitrobenzene, and from it aniline, on the large scale. The aniline of that period, owing to the imperfect methods of separating benzene and toluene, naturally contained toluidine, and the crude mixture was, curiously enough, admirably adapted for making magenta. A few years later dinitrobenzene was manufactured and reduced to m phenylenediamine for the purpose of making Manchester brown, followed by dimethylaniline, diphenylamine, benzyl chloride, and other derivatives of benzene and toluene. About the year 1869 came the demand for anthraquinone and hence for a purer form of anthracene than had up to that time been produced. The Application of the Coal Tar Dyestuffs by C. M. Whittaker Pdf
Excerpt from The Application of the Coal Tar Dyestuffs: The Principles Involved and the Methods Employed The rapid development of Applied Chemistry in recent years has brought about a revolution in all branches of technology. This growth has been accelerated during the war, and the British Empire has now an opportunity of increasing its industrial output by the application of this knowledge to the raw materials available in the different parts of the world. The subject in this series of handbooks will be treated from the chemical rather than the engineering standpoint. The industrial aspect will also be more prominent than that of the laboratory. Each volume will be complete in itself, 'and will give a general survey of the industry, showing how chemical principles have been applied and have affected manufacture. The influence of new inventions on the development of the industry will be shown, as also the effect of industrial requirements in stimulating invention. Historical notes will be a feature in dealing with the difierent branches of the subject, but they will be kept within moderate limits. Present tendencies and possible future developments will have attention, and some space will be devoted to a comparison of industrial methods and progress in the chief producing countries. There will be a general bibliography, and also a select bibliography to follow each section. Statistical information will only be introduced in so far as it serves to illustrate the line of argument. Excerpt from Dyes Classified by Intermediates: Dyes Tabularly Arranged Under Each Intermediate, With Statistical and Other Data for Both Dyes and Intermediates; Glossary of Dye and Intermediate Names Alphabetically Arranged Following the synonyms, is given the structural formula, the empirical formula, and the molecular weight. It is the emphatic. Opinion of the writer that the indexing of organic compounds by their formulas is the Simplest, the most universal, and the clearest. Chemical Abstracts, starting with 1920, has inserted a formula index, and it is believed that chemists can find a given intermediate quicker and more surely in Chemical Abstracts by the use of this formula index than by the ordinary subject index. The formulas given here will be an aid in this direction. Furthermore a formula index is included in this book.
