The contributions in this volume are based on an analysis of data from bilingual children acquiring French and German simultaneously. The longitudinal studies started at approximately age one year and six months and continued till age six. The papers focus on the development of specific grammatical phenomena; explanations are given within the framework of the Principle and Parameter approach. The study is primarily concerned with the acquisition of so-called 'functional categories' and the consequences of their acquisition for the development of grammar. Specific points dealt with in these papers include: gender, number and case and their internal structure (DP vs NP); inflection and its consequences for agreement marking; and word order phenomena (subject-raising constructions (incl. passives), word order in subordinate clauses). The basic hypothesis underlying this study is that early child grammars consist only of lexical categories and that functional categories are implemented later in the child's grammar. How this happens exactly is the central issue explored in this book.

In fact, this book has enabled me to understand how children learn two languages at the same time; how children may mix their languages in the early years, but soon after this stage, the child begins to code switch, within his two languages, in meaningful ways. In the past, it was seen as inherently bad, whereas in this book, it shows how a child can now use code switching to more clearly transmit his language, as a contextualization tactic; and this is now seen as a clear advantage that the child possesses as compared to others who are not bilingual. Even if the idea that a child should learn to answer in the appropriate language is per se right, it was the context in which it all happened which was wrong. Some people in my town believed that in a German-speaking kindergarten Italian shouldn’t be used as it would contaminate the language of other children. This is not a single case but part of a large number of misconceptions which have led parents and teachers to think of code-switching as a kind of linguistic disorder and, consequently, sending children to professionals, who might also not fully understand the field of code-switching. This can lead to wrong assumptions, stigmatizing children who are intrinsically ‘normal’ as ‘bad’ speakers. All this fears don’t apply to adults’ code-switching as it is seen as something more rule-governed. That is why the aim of this research paper is to present several arguments to support the idea that code-switching in multilingual children is not the result of a lack of proficiency, but rather the consequence of a strategic use of both languages to facilitate the achievement of linguistic and social goals (Bullock 2009). Furthermore, it will be argued that there are not so many differences between adults’ and children’s code/switching and that, as a consequence, they should be treated equally. To demonstrate this, several studies will be presented in which adults’ but, first and foremost, children’s code-switching fulfil a complex socio-pragmatic function. In the end, evidence shall be given to prove that a third grammar of code-switching doesn’t exist, and that therefore no description of a ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ way of code-switching can be postulated. This all shall attest that code-switching is an individual process which changes not only because of the different languages involved but also because of cultural phenomena. After a short definition of the term code-switching and its historical background, my personal connection to it will be presented, followed by the last two sections explaining the difference between adults’ and children’s code-switching through a juxtaposition of both.

The first section will deal with some of the theoretical approaches to code switching which try to establish certain grammatical rules for this linguistic phenomenon. Afterwards, I will analyse the code switches in the speech acts of different children in order to find out more about the nature of these switches. The aim is to find out whether code switches, within the sentence boundaries, always occur in the same position or if they can be found anywhere in the sentence. Furthermore, I will analyse what types of words are being switched and if the switches violate the word order of the sentences. All this will be looked at with regard to the principles mentioned in the first section and whether the code switches adhere to these principles or violate them. The findings and results presented here should be considered with reservation since the brevity of this paper does not allow the analysis of a representative amount of data. The data is taken from the CHILDES Corpus as well as from Gawlitzek-Maiwald and Tracy's article Bilingual Bootstrapping and from Albrecht's publication I can speak German- und Deutsch: The development and use of code-switching among simultaneous and successive English-German bilingual children.
This book proposes the Bilingual Lemma Activation Model as a method for exploring the nature and activity of the bilingual mental lexicon in both speech production and language acquisition. This model claims that the bilingual’s two languages are not equally activated in code-switching; one playing a crucial role in grammatical frame building, and the other being activated at a lexical level due to psycholinguistic reasons. To test this model, the book analyzes bilingual speech data from naturally occurring intrasentential code-switching instances involving various language pairs. A second claim of this model is that code-switching naturally occurs because certain lemmas underlying some particular lexical items stored in the bilingual mental lexicon are language-specific, and such lemmas are in contact in bilingual speech. To further test this model, second language acquisition data are analyzed here to describe and explain sources of language transfer at the level of abstract lexical structure. Thus, from some psycholinguistic perspectives, this model views bilingual speech involving code-switching and interlanguage performance data as predictable outcomes of bilingual systems in contact. This book will appeal to graduate students and researchers in both theoretical and applied linguistics.
