This thesis presents optical methods to split the energy levels of electronic valleys in transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) by means of coherent light-matter interactions. The electronic valleys found in monolayer TMDs such as MoS2, WS2, and WSe2 are among the many novel properties exhibited by semiconductors when thinned down to a few atomic layers, and have have been proposed as a new way to carry information in next generation devices (so-called valleytronics). These valleys are, however, normally locked in the same energy level, which limits their potential use for applications. The author describes experiments performed with a pump-probe technique using transient absorption spectroscopy on MoS2 and WS2. It is demonstrated that hybridizing the electronic valleys with light allows one to optically tune their energy levels in a controllable valley-selective manner. In particular, by using off-resonance circularly polarized light at small detuning, one can tune the energy level of one valley through the optical Stark effect. Also presented within are observations, at larger detuning, of a separate contribution from the so-called Bloch--Siegert effect, a delicate phenomenon that has eluded direct observation in solids. The two effects obey opposite selection rules, enabling one to separate the two effects at two different valleys.

This book covers a wide range of technical issues relating to lightwave technologies using high coherence lightwaves. Electromagnetic wave communication started when the first wireless system was invented by Marconi in 1895. However, we had to wait about one hundred years to realize a similar technology in the lightwave frequency region. The invention of lasers in 1960 and two technology innovations in 1970 -low loss silica fiber and semiconductor lasers operating at room temperature - promoted the development of fiber-optic transmission systems. The deployment of high-speed long-haul fiber-optic transmission systems has led to the formation of domestic and international trunk networks. The installed fiber cables in local loop plants provide multimedia communication services including broadband video. However, present lightwave communication systems do not fully utilize the fruitful potential oflightwaves, namely the capacity of extremely high frequency electromagnetic information carrier waves. The frequency oflightwaves used for fiber-optic transmission is about 200 THz 14 (2 x 10 Hz), and the frequency bandwidth of the fiber low loss region is about 13 20 THz (2 x 10 Hz). Recent developments of narrow spectrum width semiconduc tor laser and planar optical waveguide devices offer us the possibilities for a new generation of lightwave-based communication systems. This book focuses on system aspects ofthe new generation lightwave communi cation technologies such as optical frequency division multiplexing and coherent detection. Progress in atomic physics has been so vigorous during the past decade that one is hard pressed to follow all the new developments. In the early 1990s the first atom interferometers opened a new field in which we have been able to use the wave nature of atoms to probe fundamental quantum me chanics questions as well as to make precision measurements. Coming fast on the heels of this development was the demonstration of Bose Einstein condensation in dilute atomic vapors which intensified research interest in studying the wave nature of matter, especially in a domain in which "macro scopic" quantum effects (vortices, stimulated scattering of atomic beams) are visible. At the same time there has been much progress in our understanding of the behavior of waves (notably electromagnetic) in complex media, both periodic and disordered. An obvious topic of speculation and probably of future research is whether any new insight or applications will develop if one examines the behavior of de Broglie waves in analogous situations. Finally, our ability to manipulate atoms has allowed us not only to create macroscopically occupied quantum states but also to exercise fine control over the quantum states of a small number of atoms. This has advanced to the study of quantum entanglement and its relation to the theory of measurement and the theory of information. The 1990s have also seen an explosion of interest in an exciting potential application of this fine control: quantum computation and quantum cryptography.
