Roman Coins from India by Paula J Turner Pdf

This book is a detailed collation of the recorded finds of Roman coins on Indian soil, divided into Republican, Julio-Claudian and post-Julio-Claudian coins. It also includes chapters on the historical significance of the scarcity of Roman finds, the absence of base metal issues in the early empire, the predominance of early imperial denarii, and the difference in composition between the Julio-Claudian gold and silver hoards. There is considerable discussion on slashed gold coins and defaced silver coins and on imitation Roman coins found in India. Three exhaustive appendices include a catalogue of finds of Roman coins found in India, the present location of Roman coins found in India, and Roman coins in the Madras Central Government Museum. Copublished with the Royal Numismatic Society.

Coins in India by Himanshu Prabha Ray Pdf

This book focuses on the socio-cultural connotations of coinage in terms of power, authority, and rule legitimization. Coins function as money because the users share cultural parameters regarding their value and acceptability. Indian coinage design reflects the intricate interdependence of religious expression, personal adornment and rule legitimacy. Coins provide insights into political power and authority, while archaeological excavations, hoards, and stupa deposits place coin-finds within a larger cultural milieu. The contributors discuss this tradition from the perspectives of history and numismatic studies.

Ancient Indian Coins by Osmund Bopearachchi,Wilfried Pieper Pdf

This important contribution about ancient coins in India has been written jointly by Osmund Bopearachchi and Wilfried Pieper. It is an impressive volume of 289 pages with 59 plates which presents a private collection of ancient coins patiently gathered trough the years. In Part one, W.Pieper develops a historical commentary about the earliest coinages of India, the imperial period of late Magadha and Maurya rule ( ca late IVth-early IInd centuries B.C.), Ujjain and Eran, the Satavahanas (ca Ist century B.C.-early IInd century A.D.), and tribal republics and kingdoms in post-Mauryan northern India ( ca 200 B.C-ca 300 A.D.). This commentary is followed by a detailed catalogue with very precise drawings of more than 600 coins and punch-marked coins. Part two by o. Bopearachhi is organized on the same pattern: a historical commentary about foreign powers in ancient northern India, from the Bactrian Greeks untill the time of the early Kushans followed by a precise catalogue presenting Greek, Graeco-Bactrian and Indo-Greek, Indo-Scythian, Indo-Parthian, and early Kushan coins (in fact, more than 300 specimens). The commentary intends to give a general overview of the coins concerned and of their historical context with a more extensive discussion of the series best represented in the collection. For the indigenous Indian coins this is specially true for the coinages of Ujjain, Eran, Taxila and Kausambi, many of which are new and published here for the first time.

The Coinage of Northern India by Prafulla Chandra Roy Pdf

The Present Thesis Fulfils A Long Felt Desideratum In The Field Of Numismatical Studies In India. So Far Our Knowledge About Early Medieval Coinage Of India Has Been Very Poor And Pragmentary. A Systematic And Comprehensive Study Of Sporadic Materials Has Been, For The First Time, Successfully Attempted In This Subject. The Author With Industry And Intelligence Has Collected Thematerials, Sorted And Collated Them And Reconstructed The Structure Of His Subject. It Is Based On The Discovery Of New Facts And Fresh Interpretation Of Already Known Facts And Current Theories. It Is Both Exhaustive And Critical. It Positively Forms A Valuable Contribution To The Literature Of Numismatics And Tends Generally To The Advancement Of Knowledge. The Present Work Shows The Painstaking Labour, A Critical Study Of The Subject, And Above All Original Suggestions Which Undoubtedly Enhance The Value Of The Dissertation Like The Present One. The Up-To-Date Bibliography Shows An Extensive Range Of Study In The Political History Of The Dynasties As Well, Without A Thorough Knowledge Of Which The Present Attempt Could Hardly Have Been Possible. The Author Has Rightly Rejected The View Of D.W. Macdowall, On The Coins Of Gangeyadeva. D.W. Macdowall Is No Doubt A Great Numismatist, And I Am Glad To See That A Young Scholar Is Not Afraid To Criticise Eminent Authorities Here As Well As Elsewhere And His Criticisms Are Just And Reasonable. The Magadh University Should Undertake The Task Of The Publication Of This Valuable Work.

The Coins of the Indian Sultanates by Stan Goron,J. P. Goenka Pdf

Illustrations: 3013 B/w Coins Illustrations Description: The coinage of the Indian Sultanates is a very important primary source for helping us to understand the political and economic history of much of what is now India, Pakistan and Bangladesh during the period from the beginning of the thirteenth century AD until the seventeenth century when the last of the sultanates, that of Bijapur, was absorbed into the Mughal Empire. The right of sikka, i.e., the fight to strike coins was one of the two juridically recognized expressions of the fight of the ruler to sovereignty, and it was a right that was jealously guarded. It is a happy feature of Islamic coinage that the coins bear information not only about the rulers' names and titles but very often also the place and date of minting. In this way we can follow the progress of their rule as their territories expanded or contracted. We can learn of rulers who are otherwise not known to history, their usually ephemeral reigns not recorded in any literary sources that have come down to us. We can also examine the metals used for the currency, its fineness or debasement, and seek to draw conclusions from that. The present book, however, does not go that far. It is not intended as an economic history of the sultanate period but as an extensive, illustrated catalogue of coin types. More types are included here than in any previously published book on sultanate coins. Many are published for the first time. They come from both public and private collections in India and elsewhere. Brief histories are included for each sultanate as well as comments on the coinage and the coin legends. An extensive bibliography is also provided. This book will serve as an essential reference for students and collectors of Indian sultanate coins and for anyone else interested in this period of South Asian history.
